Polymer multimode waveguide optical and electronic PCB manufacturing
The paper describes the research in the £1.3 million IeMRC Integrated Optical and Electronic Interconnect PCB Manufacturing (OPCB) Flagship Project in which 8 companies and 3 universities carry out collaborative research and which was formed and is technically led by the author. The consortium’s research is aimed at investigating a range of fabrication techniques, some established and some novel, for fabricating polymer multimode waveguides from several polymers, some formulations of which are being developed within the project. The challenge is to develop low cost waveguide manufacturing techniques compatible with commercial PCB manufacturing and to reduce their alignment cost. The project aims to take the first steps in making this hybrid optical waveguide and electrical copper track printed circuit board disruptive technology widely available by establishing and incorporating waveguide design rules into commercial PCB layout software and transferring the technology for fabricating such boards to a commercial PCB manufacturer. To focus the research the project is designing an optical waveguide backplane to tight realistic constraints, using commercial layout software with the new optical design rules, for a demonstrator into which 4 daughter cards are plugged, each carrying an aggregate of 80 Gb/s data so that each waveguide carries 10 Gb/s
A factorial analysis of the marine carbon cycle controls on atmospheric CO2
A factorial experiment with a new Earth system model of intermediate complexity is used to assess the sensitivity of atmospheric CO2 to organic, carbonate and solubility pumps, ocean circulation state, and climate feedback. An analysis of variance of the results reveals that the organic, carbonate, and solubility pumps act multiplicatively and account for 94% of the variance of atmospheric CO2. The organic pump explains 63% (89 ppm), the solubility pump 24% (55 ppm), the carbonate pump 6% (28 ppm), and ocean circulation 0.3% (12 ppm) of the variance. Removing all pumps increases atmospheric CO2 from 278 to 525 ppm. Including interactions with all the pumps increases the effects of ocean circulation from 12 to 56 ppm. However, the ocean circulation states used are unlikely to span the full range of possible states. Changes in Pacific circulation have more effect on atmospheric CO2 than Atlantic circulation

Redesign of the double hand rim modification of the "Whirlwind" Wheelchair for manufacture in developing nations
Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2004.Includes bibliographical references (p. 32).In this thesis, I investigate possible improvements to the design of a wheelchair for manufacture in a developing nation, specifically one designed for use by persons with hemiplegia. Ralf Hotchkiss's "Whirlwind" Wheelchair is currently manufactured with local materials in many developing nations. It provides both an affordable source of quality wheelchairs for the populace as well as a source of employment. J.A. van Alphen and D.R. Arbib made modifications to the original Wheelchair design so that it would be usable by hemiplegics. However, on manufacture in Duranguito, Mexico, the chair was deemed unusable due to certain flaws. After analyzing the design of the chair, potential solutions for the two most critical problems are suggested, taking care to avoid undue increases in cost or complexity of manufacture.by Cameron M. GENIE: Exploiting Grid enabled computing and data handling resources for integrated Earth system modelling
The GENIE project is developing a grid based framework for the composition, execution and management of new Earth System Models, and the data they produce. Our principle aims are to• flexibly couple together state-of-the-art components to form unified Earth System Models (ESMs),• study and tune the resulting ESMs over multi-millennial timescales.We have achieved this by developing a framework and technologies which allow us to exploit:• grid-enabled computational resources, and• grid-enabled data management to allow post-processing, analysis and sharing of the distributed data produced by model runs.Our framework is based around the widely used Matlab problem solving environment and is also being extended to provide the same functionality for Python. It is built upon software developed by the UK Geodise project (www.geodise.org). A Matlab client
provides a common environment for the project Virtual Organisation and allows the scripting of model execution through an interface to the computational Grid (Globus
and Condor resources are supported). An augmented version of the Geodise Database Toolbox provides access to a grid-enabled repository for scripts, binaries and output data from the GENIE framework. In addition, rich metadata associated with these files is stored in a grid-enabled database, which can then be searched to locate files in the repository. We provide both GUI and programmatic access from the scripting environment to archive and retrieve files from the file repository and also to query
the metadata store. An interface is also provided to a sophisticated Design Search and Optimisation package OPTIONS which has been exploited in some of our tuning
studies.We will illustrate the use of our grid-enabled environment with a number of exemplars representative of the range of scientific challenges that we have been addressing. These include (1) ensemble studies of the behaviour of the ocean’s thermohaline circulation, (2) parameter tuning of coupled atmosphere, ocean and sea-ice models, and (3) multi-millennial timescale simulations. Our studies have used a wide range of local
and national grid-enabled computational and data handling resources and have demonstrated how the grid can be exploited for integrated Earth system modelling

The Chance and Probability Concepts Project
This article, created by D.R. Green, describes an investigation of what concepts and intuitions concerning random processes are present in the minds of children of varying abilities across the 11-16 age range. The ability to list permutations, combinations and arrangements is also being investigated. The author states, "Over the past two decades the topic of 'Probabilityâ has been brought into the mathematics curriculum but it may be that this is more an empty gesture rather than a sound strategy." This article can help to alleviate many of the struggles in teaching probability concepts. The article is pitched at a more elementary audience, but is still a perfect resource for almost anyone teaching in the field
