Friction factor for turbulent flow in rough pipes from Heisenberg's closure hypothesis

    Get PDF
We show that the main results of the analysis of the friction factor for turbulent pipe flow reported by Gioia and Chakraborty [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 044502 (2006)] can be recovered by assuming the Heisenberg closure hypothesis for the turbulent spectrum. This highlights the structural features of the turbulent spectrum underlying the analysis of Gioia and Chakraborty. © 2009 The American Physical Society.Fil: Calzetta, Esteban Adolfo. Fourth-order full quantum correlations from a Langevin-Schwinger-Dyson equation

    Get PDF
It is well known that some quantum and statistical fluctuations of a quantum field may be recovered by adding suitable stochastic sources to the mean field equations derived from the Schwinger-Keldysh (closed-time path) effective action. In this paper we show that this method can be extended to higher correlations and higher (n-particle irreducible) effective actions. As an example, we investigate third- and fourth-order correlations by adding stochastic sources to the Schwinger-Dyson equations derived from the 2-particle irreducible effective action. This method is a simple way to investigate the nonlinear dynamics of quantum fluctuations. © 2009 IOP Publishing Ltd.Fil: Calzetta, Esteban Adolfo. Hydrodynamic approach to boost invariant free streaming

    Get PDF
We consider a family of exact boost invariant solutions of the transport equation for free streaming massless particles, where the one particle distribution function is defined in terms of a function of a single variable. The evolution of second and third moments of the one particle distribution function (the second moment being the energy momentum tensor (EMT) and the third moment the non equilibrium current (NEC)) depends only on two moments of that function. Given those two moments we show how to build a non linear hydrodynamic theory which reproduces the early time evolution of the EMT and the NEC. The structure of these theories may give insight on nonlinear hydrodynamic phenomena on short time scales.Fil: Calzetta, Esteban Adolfo. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Fully developed relativistic turbulence

    Get PDF
We use a simple model consisting of energy-momentum tensor conservation and a Maxwell-Cattaneo equation for its viscous part to study nonlinear phenomena in a real relativistic fluid. We focus on new types of behavior without nonrelativistic equivalents, such as an entropy cascade driven by fluctuations in the tensor degrees of freedom of the theory. We write down the von Kármán-Howarth equations for this kind of turbulence and consider the correlations corresponding to fully developed turbulence.Fil: Calzetta, Esteban Adolfo. Extension of the momentum transfer model to time-dependent pipe turbulence

    Get PDF
We analyze a possible extension of Gioia and Chakraborty's momentum transfer model of friction in steady turbulent pipe flows to the case of time- and/or space-dependent turbulent flows. The end result is an expression for the stress at the wall as the sum of a steady and a dynamic component. The steady part is obtained by using the instantaneous velocity in the expression for the stress at the wall of a stationary flow. The unsteady part is a weighted average over the history of the flow acceleration, with a weighting function similar to that proposed by Vardy and Brown, but naturally including the effect of spatial derivatives of the mean flow, as in the Brunone model. © 2012 American Physical Society.Fil: Calzetta, Esteban Adolfo. Non-conformal evolution of magnetic fields during reheating

    Get PDF
We consider the evolution of electromagnetic fields coupled to conduction currents during the reheating era after inflation, and prior to the establishing of the proton-electron plasma. We assume that the currents may be described by second order causal hydrodynamics. The resulting theory is not conformally invariant. The expansion of the Universe produces temperature gradients which couple to the current and generally oppose Ohmic dissipation. Although the effect is not strong, it suggests that the unfolding of hydrodynamic instabilities in these models may follow a different pattern than in first order theories, and even than in second order theories on non expanding backgrounds.Fil: Calzetta, Esteban Adolfo. Collapse times for attractive Bose-Einstein condensates

    Get PDF
We argue that the main mechanism for condensate collapse in an attractive Bose-Einstein condensate is the loss of coherence between atoms a finite distance apart, rather than the growth of the occupation number in non-condensate modes. Since the former mechanism is faster than the latter by a factor of approximately 3/2, this helps to dispel the apparent failure of field theoretical models in predicting the collapse time of the condensate. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.Fil: Calzetta, Esteban Adolfo. Correlation entropy of an interacting quantum field and H theorem for the [Formula Presented] model

    No full text
Following the Boltzmann-BBGKY paradigm we propose a correlation entropy (of the nth order) for an interacting quantum field. The concept of correlation entropy is useful for addressing issues related to thermalization. As a small yet important step in that direction, we state an H theorem for the correlation entropy of a quantum-mechanical [Formula Presented] model with a closed time path two-particle irreducible effective action at the level of a next-to-leading-order large N approximation. This model may be regarded as a field theory in 0 space dimensions. We verify the validity of the proposed H theorem in two limiting cases. © 2003 The American Physical Society.Fil: Calzetta, Esteban Adolfo. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Kinesin and the crooks fluctuation theorem

    Get PDF
The thermal efficiency of the kinesin cycle at stalling is presently a matter of some debate, with published predictions ranging from 0 [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 158102 (2007); Phys. Rev. E 78, 011915 (2008)] to 100% [in Molecular Motors, edited by M. Schliwa (Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH, Weinheim (2003), p. 207]. In this note we attemp to clarify the issues involved. We also find an upper bound on the kinesin efficiency by constructing an ideal kinesin cycle to which the real cycle may be compared. The ideal cycle has a thermal efficiency of less than one, and the real one is less efficient than the ideal one always, in compliance with Carnot's theorem.Fil: Calzetta, Esteban Adolfo.
