A centennial of two great discoveries in the history of medicine: hyperpiesis and the sphygmomanometer (1896-1996) [Cien años de dos grandes acontecimientos en la historia de la medicina: hiperpiesis y esfigmomanómetro (1896-1996).]

This paper describes two outstanding contributions in the understanding and treatment of primary arterial hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. In 1896, Sir T. Clifford Allbutt reported a series of clinical cases associated with high intensity in the arterial pulse and no renal damage. He named this hyperpiesis to distinguish it from Bright's disease or chronic renal insufficiency. In the same year, Scipione Riva-Rocci invented the Sphygmomanometer which, in principle, is still used today. Also, this paper describes the research work which would lead to the development of the blood pressure measurement device. This development is as significant now as it was then

Suspension of doxazosin use implications for arterial hypertension treatment [Implicaciones de la suspensión del uso de la doxazosina en el tratamiento de la hipertensión arterial]

Old antihypertensive drugs that have demonstrated to reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality persist like an efficient alternative for managing hypertensive patients. The use of new drugs, which are necessaries, will require an intense study before they can be used in the daily practice

Is the cardioprotector effect of estrogens useful in the menopause? [¿Es útil el efecto cardioprotector de los estrógenos en la menopausia?]

    No full text
Tendency of coronary mortality to occur about 10 years later in women than in men is a well known fact. This difference has been attributed to the presence of estrogens in women. Despite the performance of many experimental and observational studies on the heart-protecting effect of estrogens, there are a lot of methodological limitations which make it difficult to obtain definitive results. This revision, shows the experimental studies where it has been demonstrated that estrogens do not increase cardiovascular protection. Emphasis is focused on adverse effects, such as the development of breast and endometrial cancer. It is also emphasized that during menopause, a series of life style modifications can be implemented, such as exercising, stop smoking and loosing weight. Undoubtedly, the results will be cardiovascular health benefits, with minimum integral health risks. © 2006 Federación Mexicana de Ginecología y Obstetricia

Apophatic Elements in the Theory and Practice of Psychoanalysis: Pseudo-Dionysius and C.G. Jung

This thesis identifies apophatic elements in the theory and practice of psychoanalysis through an examination of Pseudo-Dionysius and C.G. Jung. Pseudo-Dionysius brought together Greek and Biblical currents of negative theology and the via negativa. The apophatic concepts and metaphors which appear in the work of Pseudo-Dionysius are identified. The psychology of Jung can be read as a continuation and extension of the apophatic tradition. The presence of neoplatonic themes in Jung’s work is discussed, as well as his references to Pseudo-Dionysius. There is a thorough examination of Jung’s discussion of opposites, including his reception of Nicholas of Cusa’s concept of the coincidence of opposites. The role of the transcendent function in Jung’s psychology is reviewed. The work of contemporary scholars of religion, philosophers and Jungian theorists are compared to Jung’s using the lens of apophasis. There is an exploration of ways in which motifs in Pseudo-Dionysius’ Ecclesiatical Hierarchy resonate with contemporary psychoanalytic psychotherapy. This study demonstrates that apophatic motifs saturate Jung’s work. It provides a platform for research into apophasis in the wider field of psychoanalysis

Hélène Kiener. C.G. Jung and the theologians. (C.G. Jung et les théologiens.) This article is by one of the students of the psychologist C.G. Jung. She practised as a Jungian psychoanalyst in Strasbourg from 1946 to 1970. She deals here with the theological dimension, mostly implicit, of Jung's thouth, which is generally overlooked by theology. The author shows how the major theologians, who are the exception to the general rule, make room for Jungian anthropology, and she calls for a more open attitude in theology, because of the light thrown by Jung's thought on many theological statements.L'article qu'on lira est d'une élève du psychologue des profondeurs C. G. Jung.
