    A Complementary Approach for Adaptive and Adaptable Hypermedia: Intensional Hypertext

    In this paper we describe a methodology and an authoring/publishing tool for adaptable Web documents (user-determined adaptable Web pages) as a complementary approach to Adaptive Hypermedia. Our approach is based on intensional logic, the logic of assertions and expressions, which vary over a collection of contexts or possible worlds. In our approach the contexts are sets of values for parameters which specify the current user profile as supplied by the current Web page URL, and the latest user input. The author produces generic (multi-version) source in the form of HTML with extra markup delimiting parts that are sensitive (in various ways) to the parameters. This source (in what we call Intensional Markup Language) is translated into a Perl-like language called ISE (Intensional Sequential Evaluator). To generate the appropriately adapted individual pages, the server runs the ISE program in the appropriate context. The program produces HTML that, when displayed in the user's browser, is rendered into the desired adaptation of the requested page. Although this intensional approach was originally designed to work without any explicit user model, we can extend it (and make the documents adaptive as well as adaptable) simply by incorporating a user model that monitors the user and computes some of the profile parameters

    In spite of the interest in AHS, there are not as many applications as could be expected. We have previously pinpointed the problem to rely on the difficulty of AHS authoring. Adaptive features that have been successfully introduced and implemented until now are often too fine grained, and an author easily loses the overview. This paper introduces a three-layer model and classification method for adaptive techniques: direct adaptation rules, adaptation language and adaptation strategies. The benefits of this model are twofold: on one hand, the granulation level of authoring of adaptive hypermedia can be precisely established, and authors therefore can work at the most suitable level for them. On the other hand, this is a step towards standardization of adaptive techniques, especially by grouping them into a higher-level adaptation language or strategies. In this way, not only adaptive hypermedia authoring, but also adaptive techniques exchange between adaptive applications can be enabled

    This paper analyses one of the most well-known general purpose adaptive hypermedia systems, AHA!, and, based on this analysis, make some general observations about adaptive hypermedia systems and some improvement suggestions for the AHA! system. We suggest here a concept-based approach to the structuring of adaptive hypermedia systems, as well as an extension of the well-known rule-based overlay method for user-adaptation. This approach is another step towards flexible generic-purpose adaptive hypermedia

    Model-driven transformation and validation of adaptive educational hypermedia using CAVIAr

    Authoring of Adaptive Educational Hypermedia is a complex activity requiring the combination of a range of design and validation techniques.We demonstrate how Adaptive Educational Hypermedia can be transformed into CAVIAr courseware validation models allowing for its validation. The model-based representation and analysis of different concerns and model-based mappings and transformations are key contributors to this integrated solution. We illustrate the benefits of Model Driven Engineering methodologies that allow for interoperability between CAVIAr and a well known Adaptive Educational Hypermedia framework. By allowing for the validation of Adaptive Educational Hypermedia, the course creator limits the risk of pedagogical problems in migrating to Adaptive Educational Hypermedia from static courseware

    [Genetic data: scientific research purposes, security demands and the right to Data Protection] Given that genetic data belong to category of the “sensitive data”, this essay is focused on two constitutional issues, looking at the main national and European sources of law and the decisions of Italian Data Protection Authority.  The Author, first, explores limits that the Data Protection Law imposes on the scientific research and healthcare purposes, especially referring to the Italian DPA General Authorizations. Secondly, she examines the difficult relation between Data Protection Law and public security purposes, focusing on the new National Genetic Database. The Author’s aim is to give some suggestions to single out guidelines for balancing individual liberties and public policy demands. Finally, she analyses the last initiatives to be adopted to complete the normative frame of the National Genetic Database

The Author focuses on two main profiles. Firstly, the protection of information and data related to everyone’s religious convictions and ideas, which GDPR defines as “special categories of data”. Secondly, the Author deals with special categories of processors, such as churches, religious organizations and religious associations (art. 91 GDPR). The common aim is to guarantee human dignity and freedom, finding the balance between religious freedom, privacy and a correct Church-State relationship

    Becoming Vincent: Using storytelling to link Vincent van Gogh's heritage sites physically and digitally

    This case describes a research and development project, commissioned to NHTV University of Applied Sciences (Breda, the Netherlands) by several regional, tourism organizations in Brabant, a province in the south of the Netherlands. The aim of the project was to draft a narrative concept and storylines that would link and upgrade the various Vincent Van Gogh heritage sites in the area in order to eventually attract international tourists to the province, especially in view of the commemoration of Van Gogh’s 125th death anniversary in 2015. In the creative phase we used a 12 steps storytelling model (Bouma, 2010). This is based on Campbell’s “Monomyth” (1945). It applies to many great tales and chronologically orders the (metaphorical) steps that drive the “hero” in his actions. We compared the 12 steps to Vincent’s life. The first 6 steps, which took place in Brabant, we placed under the overarching narrative concept of “Becoming Vincent”. At various locations in the province, tourists can experience how the events in Vincent’s early life lead him to become the tormented yet brilliant artist so well-known from his time in France (which we defined as “Being Vincent”), thus making a full narrative circle.     This chapter presents the process that led to the development of a virtual experience for the church in Etten-Leur, which is part of the heritage related to Vincent van Gogh and which hosts a permanent exhibition related to the artist’s life in the area. As such, it is one of the elements in the Becoming Vincent project. This chapter highlights the complexity of the heritage ecosystem underlying the project, consisting of various stakeholders with diverse, sometimes diverging or even incompatible, interests and goals. In this chapter, we discuss how we coped with this diversity and we draw some of the lessons we learnt from this process for future use. The most important lesson is the need to involve all stakeholders from the start of the process and to treat them equally, despite visible differences in their relative interest in the outcome of the project, in order to give them the feeling to have ownership on the expected outcome, and therefore to enhance the chances that they will still support the project after its completion. At the same time, it is important to keep the network structure simple and clear in order to avoid unnecessary or redundant passages in the knowledge transmission within this web of relations. While not specific for museums but prone to be applied to any complex networked situation, this approach has helped us cope with a complex cultural ecosystem.</p
