Variations on the Author
No full text“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Genetics of anophthalmia and microphthalmia. Part 1: Non-syndromic anophthalmia/microphthalmia
No full textEye formation is the result of coordinated induction and differentiation processes during embryogenesis. Disruption of any one of these events has the potential to cause ocular growth and structural defects, such as anophthalmia and microphthalmia (A/M). A/M can be isolated or occur with systemic anomalies, when they may form part of a recognizable syndrome. Their etiology includes genetic and environmental factors; several hundred genes involved in ocular development have been identified in humans or animal models. In humans, around 30 genes have been repeatedly implicated in A/M families, although many other genes have been described in single cases or families, and some genetic syndromes include eye anomalies occasionally as part of a wider phenotype. As a result of this broad genetic heterogeneity, with one or two notable exceptions, each gene explains only a small percentage of cases. Given the overlapping phenotypes, these genes can be most efficiently tested on panels or by whole exome/genome sequencing for the purposes of molecular diagnosis. However, despite whole exome/genome testing more than half of patients currently remain without a molecular diagnosis. The proportion of undiagnosed cases is even higher in those individuals with unilateral or milder phenotypes. Furthermore, even when a strong gene candidate is available for a patient, issues of incomplete penetrance and germinal mosaicism make diagnosis and genetic counseling challenging. In this review, we present the main genes implicated in non-syndromic human A/M phenotypes and, for practical purposes, classify them according to the most frequent or predominant phenotype each is associated with. Our intention is that this will allow clinicians to rank and prioritize their molecular analyses and interpretations according to the phenotypes of their patients

It was established specifically for urban Jewish garment workers, many of whom had emigrated from Europe. President John F. Kennedy sent a telegram to the citizens of Roosevelt, New Jersey, apologizing for not being able to attend the memorial dedication in honor of former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. (Jersey Homesteads became Roosevelt in 1945 in honor of the president.) President Kennedy expressed his gratitude to the people of Roosevelt for constructing the memorial, and commented that it will serve as a constant reminder of Roosevelt's good works
Logarithmic variance profiles and the corresponding f-1 spectra of temperature fluctuations in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection
No full textWe report experimental results for the temperature variance 2(z) and the corresponding frequency spectra P(f) in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) in a cylindrical sample of aspect ratioT= D/L = 1:00 (D = 1:12 m is the diameter and L = 1:12 m the height). The measurements were conducted in the Rayleigh-number range 1011 < Ra < 1:35 1014 and Pr ' 0:8. For Ra = 1:35x1014, 2(z) could be described well by a logarithmic dependence on the vertical position z in a range of z 1 < z < z 2 with z 1 ' 70 and z 2 = 0:1L. Here L=(2Nu) is the thickness of a thin thermal sublayer adjacent to the horizontal plate where the heat flux (denoted by the Nusselt number Nu) is carried mostly by thermal diffusion. In the log layer, we found that the temperature spectra had a significant frequency range over which P(f) f with close to 1. As Ra decreased, increased so that the log layer became thinner. At Ra = 2:05 1011, z 2 < z 1 and therefore there was no range for a log layer. Correspondingly, the temperature spectrum near the horizontal plate did not have the f1 scaling form either

No full textThe authors conducted an author cocitation analysis on prominent authors writing about the Olympics during the 1990s. Author cocitation is an established bibliometric technique that can be used to measure the relative similarities of topics written about by the cited authors. This enables a visual representation of the “intellectual space” of the discipline, in this case the Olympics, to be created for the period under review. So core and peripheral research areas are identified, along with their major contributors. The representation appears as a two-dimensional cluster-enhanced map. Subject expertise was then applied to the results to place labels on the generated clusters of authors and their topics

No full textEsta investigación busca analizar los mecanismos de impunidad que se consolidaron en torno a un caso conocido como “Las niñas calvas” de Puerto Gaitán (Meta), que consistió en la imposición de un marco normativo de comportamientos, considerados válidos por la organización paramilitar de las Autodefensas Campesinas del Meta y Vichada (ACMV) y que está ligado a la estructura patriarcal que sitúa a las mujeres en ciertos roles, oficios, lugares y formas de ser. Así, las niñas y adultas que no se ajustaron a lo dictado por los paramilitares en complicidad de algunos políticos de la región y parte de la población, fueron amenazadas y sancionadas violentamente a través de la perpetración de distintos tipos de violencia, específicamente de esclavitud, violencia sexual y psicológica (fueron rapadas, desnudadas forzosamente y obligadas a ejercer trabajos pesados), con la intención de “moldear y corregir” lo que ellos consideraron una “desviación”.
Dichos castigos fueron infligidos por paramilitares de las ACMV entre los años 2000 y 2005, en connivencia con un sector político de la región y un segmento de la población, incluyendo algunas madres que presuntamente entregaron sus hijas a la estructura criminal.
Esta tesis se propone esclarecer los factores que permitieron la victimización de las mujeres a través de omisiones, acciones jurídicas fallidas e incumplimientos normativos, que engranaron mecanismos de impunidad y las condiciones socioculturales que hicieron posible el crimen desde tres ámbitos de responsabilidad: los victimarios que ejecutaron las acciones de violencia, el entorno social que permitió este crimen y el Estado que no operó ante las denuncias o que fue cómplice de la victimización.
La tesis se compone de cuatro capítulos. El primer capítulo denominado, Violencia paramilitar contra las mujeres de Puerto Gaitán (Meta): referentes para su análisis, el segundo apartado titulado Territorio y desarrollo: configuración del “apartheid institucional” para el control paramilitar, el tercer capítulo titulado La violencia paramilitar: Caracterización del caso de “Las niñas calvas” de Puerto Gaitán y el cuarto capítulo denominado Mecanismos de impunidad en el caso de “Las niñas calvas”.Magister en Estudios SocialesMaestrí
