    No full text
It is an audiovisual film that presents a musical compilation of five artists accompanied by sculptural objects and is one of the other outputs of the ntity.one.Default platform. The ntity.one.Default platform has been a collectively curated platform connecting the independent electronic scene and visual art for two years. The audio-visual D-SEED I focuses on materiality, especially fabric, in sculptural objects. The haptic and tactile perception of art is the axis of interest in the artistic activity of the authors of these sculptural objects. Their creations outline a surreal world that is partly influenced by the reflection of the climate crisis we are facing. Michaela Rožnovská sculptural objects, in collaboration with Martin Dominik Kratochvíl, make imaginations of new animals on earth visible, based on abstracted shapes of plants or the simplest organisms living on this planet. They present themselves as heirs of our culture, mythology and religion. The sound side of the whole audiovisual film is created from a compilation of five performers - RLUNG, Thistle, Natálie Pleváková, sees_pod, timmi. The resulting sound mix is the work of the author sees_pod (Martin Dominik Kratochvíl). The whole compilation is composed of ambient surfaces, field recordings and processing. The whole is then built as a collage of constantly changing situations and emotions. At the moment when it may seem to the viewer that something identifiable emerges from the changing mixture, the composition turns into something else

"Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"

    No full text
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.

Rent - seeking trade policy : a time series approach

    No full text
Using a time-series approach, the author analyzes the relationship between the extent of rent-seeking trade policy and both political and economic variables. For rent-seeking trade policy, the indicator he uses is the number of foreign-trade regulations passed each year for the benefit of a single firm or industry. The author uses data from Uruguay for 1925-83. Uruguay, which experienced an impressive economic decline, is an outstanding example of a rent-seeking society. After being a wealthy economy in midcentury, it suffered almost complete stagnation, which led to social and policital disintegration by the end of the 1960s. Three decades of restrictive regulations on foreign trade had created a nearly closed economy by the end of the 1960s. It was worth analyzing whether policymakers'great receptiveness to demands for protection could account for Uruguay's decline. Over the period 1925-83, the author finds almost 4,000 laws, decrees, and administrative resolutions that create, maintain, or modify a foreign-trade regulation for the benefit of a single firm or industry. About half of them explicitly identify the petitioner - usually a firm or guild. Since the size of the Uruguayan economy changed over the period studied, the author scales the annual number of regulations by output or exports to measure the extent of rent-seeking trade policy. The author shows that the extent of rent-seeking trade policy increased with discretionary policies and under dictatorship. (In the period studied, there were two stages of democracy - until 1932 and from 1943-72 - and two stages of dictatorship.) He also shows that rent-seeking trade restrictions increased under import-substitution strategies and, more unexpectedly, under active export promotion. This suggests that discretionary power leads to wasteful distribution, whether it is used to support inward- or outward-oriented policies. Finally, the author analyzes the correlation between innovations in the trade policy indicator and innovations in the growth rates of output and exports, with a lag of up to 20 years. Surprisingly, he finds a positive correlation with output growth rates after two or three years. But the correlation becomes negative some years later, particularly in the case of exports. The short-run positive impact on growth rates, together with the surprisingly long time lag before the negative impact, may account for policymakers'receptiveness to demands for protection.Trade Policy,Achieving Shared Growth,TF054105-DONOR FUNDED OPERATION ADMINISTRATION FEE INCOME AND EXPENSE ACCOUNT,Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies

Economic evaluation of a stratified transport method for Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) juveniles

    No full text
The objective of this study was to evaluate a convenient, low-cost modification to conventional transfer methods for Atlantic halibut juveniles. A series of wire mesh cages were stacked within transport tanks creating a stratified transport system (STS), increasing the surface area for settlement and facilitating a more homogeneous distribution of halibut throughout the tank compared with the conventional insulated box (Unstructured, UTS). A stochastic cost-benefit analysis determined investment into a STS to be cost-effective, generating a mean benefit-cost ratio of 1.31 (95% CI, 0.68–2.00) after 2 years and a mean 5-year net present value of 85,176(9546,906–$125,630). The implementation of a STS was found to be technically feasible and economically efficient method to improve Atlantic halibut transport.Peter J. Sykes, Carol A. McClure, Debbie J. Finding Jean-Blaise Martin: An italianate approach for a modernized baryton-Martin Fach

    No full text
The voice type or ‘fach’ baryton-Martin was named for Nicolas Jean-Blaise Martin (1768–1837), a French baritone celebrated for his agile voice, brilliant timbre, and extensive range. Historical accounts described his voice as having the depth of a bass-baritone with a tenorial upper range. Unfortunately, with the departure of Martin and the evolution of voice types during the bel canto era, this particular voice category fell out of favor. However, there is a voice type that successfully evolved and survived the bel canto era: the modern lyric tenor. The manner in which we have grown accustomed to hearing singers of this fach on today’s stages is largely due to the groundwork laid by the French Grand Opera tenors of the nineteenth century. The transformation of this fach, from the refined vocal sound of the tenore di grazia to the heroic sound of the tenore di forza, was inspired by many influences but was primarily made using the vocal techniques practiced in Italy, now known as the International Italian School of Singing. This document proposes that a transformation similar to that made by these French Grand Opera tenors could be undertaken by modern singers of the baryton-Martin fach in order to establish a legitimate lyric voice fach between lyric baritone and dramatic tenor. A reinvestigation of the attributes and reputation of Martin’s voice will be made concerning Richard Weidlich’s thesis, “Jean-Blaise Martin and the Opéra-Comique: a Study of Selected Airs by the Original baryton-Martin,” as well as Dr. Matthew Hoch’s current research on one of Martin’s successors, Pierre Bernac. This reinvestigation will hopefully define further the distinct qualities of the baryton-Martin voice and determine why this voice category has not established itself as a definitive voice type by today’s standards. The second half of this document discusses a pedagogical solution for the promotion of the International Italian School of Singing to ‘modernize’ baryton-Martin singers by adopting the trusted concepts of passaggi, appoggio, and copertura. Also, selections of arias from operetta, oratorio, and musical theater, currently associated with other voice types which have similar passaggi to those of the baryton-Martin, will be explored using the tenets of the International Italian School of Singing. The logic of the baryton-Martin adopting arias and roles like these will hopefully be displayed. The main goal of this author is to encourage this evolution of technique, to secure the place of the baryton-Martin fach in the operatic world again, and to cultivate a new repertoire and utility for a ‘modernized’ baryton-Martin

Adapting musicology's use of affect theories to contemporary theatre making: Directing Martin Crimp's attempts on her life

    No full text
Copyright @ Intellect 2011Adopting and adapting musicology's use of affect theories, specifically Jeremy Gilbert's idea of an 'affective analysis' and David Epstein's idea of 'shaping affect', this article looks at Martin Crimp's Attempts on Her Life from a practitioner's perspective. It investigates the challenges and benefits of adopting an 'affective approach' to directing recent theatre texts that stress the musicality and corporeality of language along with, and at times above, its signifying roles. Rather than locating Aristotelian dramatic climaxes based on narratological or characterological progression, an affective approach seeks to identify moments of affective intensity, which produce a different sort of impact by working on a 'body-first' methodology, rather than the directly cerebral. That this embodied impact is not ultimately meaningless is one of affect theory's most vital assertions. This approach has resonance in terms of how directors, performers and critics/theorists approach work of this type
