The Mark of Cain Guilt and Denial in the Post-War Lives of Nazi Perpetrators
In The Mark of Cain, Katharina von Kellenbach draws on letters exchanged between clergy and Nazi perpetrators, written notes of prison chaplains, memoirs, sermons, and prison publications to illuminate the moral and spiritual struggles of perpetrators after the war.Cover -- Contents -- Acknowledgments -- Introduction -- 1. Studies toward the 1,6-CAIN
Thesis (Ph. D.)--University of Rochester. Department of Chemistry, 2016.1,6-Conjugate addition-initiated Nazarov reaction (1,6-CAIN) is an efficient and highly diastereoselective method to synthesize 5-hydroxycyclyopentenone which is an important motif in many small molecules and nature products. In this thesis, several developments of this reaction have been achieved. In the early stage, five different routes for the synthesis of α-ketodienones as the precursors for 1,6-CAIN have been developed. These routes allowed us to further conduct experiments on a series of substrates and nucleophiles to define the scope of the 1,6-CAIN reaction. In a 1,6-CAIN addition/elimination reaction, a Cinchona alkaloid derivative was identified and allowed us to achieve excellent enantioselectivities (up to >99:1 er).
In the latter chapters of this thesis, two novel cascade reactions centered on the 1,6-CAIN reaction were studied: 1) cascade 1,6-CAIN and Michael reaction 2) 1,6-CAIN
and a cascade redox 1,5-hydride transfer/ring closure reaction. In the cascade 1,6-CAIN and Michael, we succeeded in this cascade reaction with the use of dual nucleophiles such as β-ketoesters, benzene-1,2-diamines derivatives, and a Boc protected amino malonate. These allowed us to obtain fused (5,5), (5,6), and (5,7) ring
systems bearing the 5-hydroxycyclopentenone motif. In addition, the relative stereochemistry was totally controlled and selective with up to five continuous stereocenters. In the final part of this thesis, we developed a unique 1,6-CAIN and a cascade redox 1,5-hydride transfer/ring closure reaction. To our knowledge, only few examples of the redox 1,5-hydride transfer/ring closure reactions centered on a nonextended conjugation system have been reported. Also, this is the first study to use secondary amines as the hydride donors. This cascade reaction allowed us to build complex bridged systems with up to four stereocenters with good to excellent diastereoselectivities. Those four stereocenters included three quaternary carbons and one tertiary alcohol
Literature-informed, one-turn action research: three cases and a commentary
Although action research is a common feature of courses of initial teacher training, the evidence as to its efficacy, in encouraging reflection among trainees, is mixed. This article discusses cases of action research assignments carried out by three trainees into their own practice in relation to a) behaviour management, b) monitoring and assessing, and c) pupil-centred education. The assignments are analysed using Bloom’s (1964) typology of thinking skills, Handal & Lauvas’ (1987) model of reflective practice, and typologies of action research by Noffke (1997) and Rearick & Feldman (1999). They are positioned as cases of ‘literature-informed, one-turn’ action research; a concept which is discussed in relation to other concepts of action research
Music education research: what's the point?
This article explores the purpose of research in music education. It finds that research, a) describes and documents innovative practice, b) challenges taken-for-granted perceptions, c) generates or expands big ideas and d) provokes thought
