This study concerns the reconstruction of urban and suburban routes of ancient Cagliari, an aspect which showed to be one of the most complex and interesting features of a more extensive research project which aims to offer a reconstructive hypothesis of topographic structure of Cagliari’s suburban area from the antiquity until 1258. The present study can be considered an interpretative suggestion, since the quasi-total absence of sources, the fragmentary character of archeological data and the changes that the whole area has undergone during the centuries do not allow a exhaustive reconstruction of the road network on a larger scale, at present. The street system - though conditioned by the orography and the soil slope - was practically orthogonal to the coast line and in accordance with the directions of extra-urban roads which connected the city with the inland and the coastal areas.

Cagliari nel Medioevo tra passato e futuro. Le "diverse" Cagliari

This thesis will explore the different settlements that succeed or cohexisted during the Middle Age in the current city boundary of Cagliari. The research is based especially on the analysis of historical and artistic testimonies dating from the Late Antiquity to the 15th century, with particular attention to the centuries after the Year 1000. Thanks to an interdisciplinary approach in research methodology that keeps the settlement arisen in the 13th century as a constant point of reference, the thesis focuses on the remaining buildings by the available sources of the settlement founded in the 13th century by Pisans and built on the slopes of the “Castle” compared to the previous, contemporary and following ones. This historical and artistic heritage has been used as a "fossil zero-point" to conduct a topographical analysis of the different "cities of Cagliari". The main thread, the constant reference point of the research, has been identified in the first view that embraces the whole city of Cagliari in the forms assumed at the end of the Middle Age in a print of mid 16th century inserted in the treatise "Sardiniae brevis historia et descriptio" by Sigismondo Arquer. The work was published in Basel in 1550, in the first latin edition of "Cosmographia Universalis" by Sebastian Münster. In the present work, the "zero level" function was assigned to the xylography for the execution of an unusual and virtual "stratigraphic reading" of the city. The preceding phases of constructive works and of the road layout in the view were examined with the aim of reconstructing their medieval forms. In order to get as close as possible to this goal, we have used extrapolable tracks from the sources and the history of the studies, and the formal reading of the emergencies survived even only at the documentary level. From the "zero level", which corresponds to the layer of 1550, not only has it been excavated deeply in search of the oldest levels, but it has progressed to our days to examine also the interventions that have modified the buildings, the infrastructures and the streets of the city known by the Arquer. This dissertation, therefore, wants to be a useful tool for the exploitation of the Sardinian capital in its different urban stratifications

L’Istituto di Fisica di Cagliari tra fine Ottocento e primi decenni del Novecento

The project, started some time ago, aimed at conduct a more accurate and systematic investigation on the situation of Physics in Italy between the XIX and XX centuries, led to the discovery of many peripheral situations and to the role of different physicists not considered of primary importance. It is in this context that the Institute of physics of Cagliari and the figure of Giovanni Guglielmo are examined. Giovanni Guglielmo was a physicist who worked in Torino, Cagliari and Sassari, director of the Physics Laboratory of Cagliari for 37 years, Dean of the Faculty of Science and author of two handwritten notes of his lectures and over one hundred articles published in the most prestigious magazines of his time. Following a bitter controversy with a colleague, Professor of Applied Physics and director of the School of Electrotechniques of Torino, Guglielmo became isolated by the scientific community, giving an early end to his intense scientific career. In the thesis I examine also the role played in Physics Institute of Cagliari by Rita Brunetti, successor of Guglielmo and director of the Institute from 1928 to 1936

The Cagliari Airport impact on Sardinia tourism: a Logit-based analysis

In the field of air transportation management, traditionally, airlines have been the main actors in the process for deciding which new flights open in a given airport, while airports acted only as the managers of the operations. The changes in the market due to the introduction of low cost companies, with consequent reduction of the airports' fares, as well as the increment of the density of regional airports in several European countries are modifying the mutual roles of airlines and airports. The final decision on new flight to be opened, in fact, is nowadays the result of a negotiation between airlines and airports. The airports must prove the sustainability on the new routes and forecast the economic impact on their catchment area. This paper contributes to advance the current state-of-the-art along two axes. From the pure transportation literature point of view, we introduce a Logit model able to predict the passengers flow in an airport when the management introduces a change in the flight schedule. The model is also able to predict the impact of this change on the airports in the surrounding areas. The second contribution is a case study on the tourist market of the Sardinia region, where we show how to use the results of the model to deduce the economic impact of the decisions of the management of the Cagliari airport on its catchment area in terms of tourists and economic growt

This paper describes the experience of teaching Human Computer Interaction Engineering (HCI-E) concepts in the User Interface Technologies course for the Master’s Degree in Computer Science at the University of Cagliari. The course covers the general traits of technologies for building User Interfaces for different platforms and modalities, including the architecture of classical desktop interface toolkits, the fundamentals of information visualization, gestural interaction, eXtended Reality and seminars about the interplay between Artificial Intelligence and the development of User Interfaces. We motivate the syllabus design for this course and the assessment method, discussing the issues and the success points we registered in four years since we started giving this course
