Non-negative Matrix Factorization: an Application to Erta ’Ale volcano, Ethiopia

    No full text
Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) is an emerging new technique in the blind separation of signals recorded in a variety of different fields. The application of these techniques to the analysis of volcanic signals is new to date. Volcanic tremor, the continuous seismic signal recorded close to a volcano, often consists of a mixture of signals having different and independent sources, both volcanic and non-volcanic, possibly including anthropogenic ones. In this paper we show that NMF is a suitable technique to separate such a mixture of foreground / interesting / target ”signals” from background / interference / undesired ”noise”. The encouraging results obtained with this methodology in the presented case study, separating high convection foreground signal from low convection background noise at Erta ’Ale lava lake, support its wider applicability in volcanic signals separation

UNIDFT: A Package of optimized Discrete Fourier Transforms

We present a package of FORTRAN 77 subprograms to compute the discrete Fourier transform of one-dimensional data sets. A large collection of specialized modules, assembled in a top-down scheme, guarantees high flexibility and efficiency. Comparative timings are given. © 1987

Building innovative models of territorial governance

    No full text
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine public-private partnerships with a particular focus on the impact that such partnerships have on territorial governance. These organizations are spread all over the world with the goal of promoting community participation and sustainable development, and engaging citizens and organizations in the decision making of local governance. This situation underlines important changes in governance and territorial governance models. Design/methodology/approach – A mix of qualitative and quantitative approaches are used. Analysing the existing literature, the paper focuses on specific type of public-private partnership: the Local Action Group (LAG). Specifically, this study focuses on 63 Italian LAGs, in order to highlight their role in the challenges that local governance has to face. Findings – Findings suggest that public-private partnerships can represent a new model of governance – the Partnership Governance – with features that differentiate this form from other models. Originality/value – Through a relatively novel statistical technique, combined with interviews, document analysis and direct observations, on the one hand the public-private partnership phenomenon is observed, and on the other hand, a new mode of governance that is affecting the worldwide scenario in a current era and that is introducing ethical principles in governance systems is conceived. Reducing wind noise in seismic data using non-negative matrix factorization: An application to Villarrica volcano, Chile

    No full text
Single channel source separation of seismic signals is an appealing but difficult problem. In this paper, we introduce a semi-blind single-channel seismic source separation method to enhance the components of volcanic origin. In this method, the source decomposition scheme is addressed as a Sparse Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) of the time-frequency representation of the single vertical seismic channel. As a case study we present an application using seismic data recorded at Villarrica volcano, Chile, one of the most active in the southern Andes. The analysed dataset is strongly contaminated by wind noise and the procedure is used to separate a component of volcanic origin from another of meteorological origin

Shifting Territorial Governance Through The Local Partnerships Commitment

    No full text
Since ’90 socio-economic local development policies have changed their physiognomy. Public actors have involved private entities in the decision making process related to those policies that affect local development, creating agreements called public-private partnerships. Their spread represents one of the first bricks for shifting territorial governance from a top down to a bottom up process. Studying this phenomenon, we paint a new picture of territorial governance characterized by ethical principles able to promote local development, improving citizens’ wellbein
