Tra frizioni e possibili alleanze : famiglie, contesti educativi ed educazione di genere

    No full text

Chest. 2005 Aug;128(2):976-9. Are physicians aware of the side effects of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors?: a questionnaire survey in different medical categories. Lombardi C, Crivellaro M, Dama A, Senna G, Gargioni S, Passalacqua G. Source Allergy-Pulmonology Unit, Department of Internal Medicine, S. Orsola FBF Hospital, Brescia. Abstract STUDY OBJECTIVE: Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE-I) are considered safe, but they are associated with characteristic side effects, namely cough and angioedema, usually requiring discontinuation. We perceived that referrals for these side effects have become more and more frequent; therefore, we evaluated the degree of knowledge on the safety of ACE-I in different medical categories. DESIGN: A questionnaire (13 questions) on side effects of ACE-I was posted to physicians. SETTING: Everyday clinical practice. PARTICIPANTS: Cardiologists, allergists, and general practitioners (GPs) from the National Healthcare System. MEASUREMENT AND RESULTS: Three hundred twelve physicians were contacted, and 154 returned questionnaires that could be analyzed. Of the 154 physicians (mean age, 45 years) 48 were cardiologists, 52 were GPs, and 54 were allergists. The percentage of correct answers was low: 31.9% for cardiologists, 40% for GPs, and 33% for allergists. Thus, GPs provided a significantly higher percentage of correct answers with respect to the remaining categories (p = 0.05). The lower rate of correct answers (0 to 15.9%) concerned the time of onset of cough and the action to take. Cardiologists seemed to be less aware of the fact that angiotensin receptor blockers (sartans) can cross-react with ACE-I. CONCLUSION: Overall, there was a poor knowledge of the side effects of ACE-I. This may account for the increased referrals for chronic cough and angioedema

The “blue ring”: anatomy and formation hypothesis of a new tree-ring anomaly in conifers

Key message: Double-stained microsections from highaltitudePinus nigrawood cores highlighted unlignified latewood cells possibly linked to abrupt temperature reduction at the end of the growing season. More consolidated detection could increase their role in dendroecology. Cambial activity and wood formation are influenced by environmental factors, primarily climate. During cell wall formation the lignification is mainly controlled by temperature. By staining with safranin and astra blue it is possible to distinguish cell walls richer in lignin (stained in red) from those richer in cellulose (stained in blue). Here we show an uncommon phenomenon observed in 41 transverse sections prepared for anatomical studies of young European black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold) individuals. We detected some layers of incompletely lignified cells that appear blue in safranin–astra blue-stained sections. Growth rings showing this anatomical feature were named “blue rings”. The aims of this preliminary study are: (i) to describe the features of this peculiar anatomical trait, (ii) to enhance its visualization, and (iii) to suggest possible drivers of its formation. First results indicate the influence of low air temperature causing a lack of lignification in latewood cells. The added values provided by the identification of “blue rings” within tree-ring series could be (i) their possible use as pointer year, (ii) cross dating improvement, and (iii) finer assessment of tree sensitivity to environmental and climatic factors. © 2014, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg

Soft Law in International Investment Arbitration

This article's purpose is to pinpoint the four elements contributing to defining the contours of soft law. More squarely, the rules enshrined in acts of soft law: i) are produced both by subjects of international law and by private entities; ii) do not arise from any of the formal sources of international law as listed in Article 38 of the Statute of the International Court of Justice; iii) are characterized by a certain proximity to law, that is by the ability to “influence” the behavior of those to whom they are directed; and, iv) are even more influential when they are able to respond to expectations shared by the international community as a whole

Il difficile equilibrio fra etica e libertà nella ricerca

For anthropologists working in their own home country, the ethical dilemmas brought about by the relationship with the community they study are different – although not entirely "other" – compared to those that anthropologists working in so called “exotic” fields face (Tarabusi 2014). When the field is "at home" (Jackson 1987; Peirano 1998), the subjects who participated in the research «surround the anthropologist at her or his desk» (Mosse, 2006: 937), “they read what we write” (Brettell 1993), sometimes claiming the possibility to raise objections and challenging the ethnographer’s authority (Mosse 2006, 2015). Our stakeholders – whether the sponsors or the other informants and interlocutors – may also feel somehow "betrayed" by the ethnographic representation (Brettell 1993; Fabietti 1999; Scheper-Hughes 2001; Rossi 2003; Semi 2010); they cannot recognize themselves and their practices in the ethnographic account of their experience (Sorgoni 2011). Reactions to the anthropological writing can be extremely emotional: they, in fact, have to do with «the relationship between professionals [...] to descriptions of their organizational work» (Mosse 2015: 131). Publishing is, therefore, a particularly delicate moment in the relationship between the anthropologist and his interlocutors. Drawing on empirical experience, this paper describes the negative reactions to writing. The purpose is twofold: exploring the issue of ethical dilemmas involved in the negative reception of an ethnographic account; and outlining the possible strategies that allow limiting the risks that Applied and “at home” Anthropology entail
