AN APPRAISAL OF BASE ISOLATION FOR LARGE MONUMENTAL BUILDINGS

    No full text
Traditional techniques for improving the seismic performance of buildings are based either on the increase in strength or in ductility or, sometimes, of both at the same time. This approach, however, can lead to interventions often deemed as too invasive on heritage buildings. An interesting alternative approach consists in the seismic base isolation of this type of buildings. This modern technique acts rather reducing the seismic energy fed into the structure, rather than trying to forcibly increase its strength or its ductility with local reinforcements. The aim of this work is related to the appraisal of available base isolation techniques with reference to the application to large monumental buildings, where several peculiar aspects have to be considered due to the building age, the urban context around these buildings, the remains of previous constructions these buildings might have been built over. All aspects complicating choice of the isolation system and the positioning of the isolation plane. Furthermore, in this work a base isolation intervention exploiting a classical technique of creating the isolation plane is designed and compared with a new proposal that seeks to obtain the isolation plane several meters below the building foundations

Multi-Criteria Analysis and Decision-Making Approach for the Urban Regeneration: The Application to the Rimini Canal Port (Italy)

In recent decades, urban settlements have been greatly affected by globalisation, climate change, and economic uncertainty. When designing cities, these factors should be taken into account and adapted to the different contexts involved. The redevelopment of degraded urban areas is the first step toward achieving the sustainability aims set out in the Sustainable Development Goals. In this context, evaluation methods are required in the decision-making process, considering different social, economic, and environmental aspects to define the correct policies and actions for city redevelopment. In this paper, an evaluation methodology is proposed in order to obtain a priority scale of interventions for urban regeneration. Starting from on-site inspections to better know the current scenario, a set of indicators is established to evaluate the urban quality. Criticalities and potentials emerge through SWOT analysis and, with the ANP-BOCR method, the priority scale of the identified scenarios is defined. This decision-making approach was applied to the case study of the Rimini Canal Port, in the northeast of Italy, which is a degraded area of the city. This methodology is a tool that can be used in the future by decision makers (DMs) for the redevelopment of small port areas within similar urban contexts

Base Isolation for large monumental buildings

Italy is one of the countries with the highest number of historical and monumental buildings. At the same time is a country of moderate/high seismic risk. Many of the Italian historical and monumental buildings are large masonry structures dating back to centuries ago, that can be highly vulnerable to earthquakes. One interesting approach for improving their seismic performance consists in seismic base isolation. This modern technique explicates its beneficial effects by adding a controlled source of damping and moving away the structure from the most energetic band of frequency of the soil motion. Dealing with base isolation of monumental buildings implies consideration for several peculiar, multidisciplinary, aspects. These are related to the age of these buildings, to the fact that they might have become part of larger built-up units, or they might have been built over previous buildings the remains of which can be themselves of interest for the cultural heritage. The aim of this work is first related to an evaluation of the main issues related to base isolation of large historical buildings. Subsequently, a tentative base isolation application is presented with reference to a prototypal case study, to better assess the practicality of base isolation when large historic buildings are concerned

A New pH Sensor Based on a Glassy Carbon Electrode Coated with a Co/Al Layered Double Hydroxide

    No full text
A glassy carbon electrode has been coated by electrodeposition with a thin film of cobalt based layered double hydroxide (LDH) and used as a pH sensor. The developed electrode displays a linear super-Nernstian response (76.20.6 mV/pH) in the pH range between 2 and 14 and it is particularly suitable to operate in strongly alkaline solution. The reproducibility of the sensor construction is good with a relative standard deviation of the calibration curve slopes of2.5% (n=4). The electrode has a response time comparable to that exhibited by commercial glass electrodes in the pH range examined and is not affected by interference from the most common anions and cations

Analysis and Evaluation of Mobility Solutions and Targeted Interventions to Support the Urban Regeneration of the Canal Port of Rimini

    No full text
The Canal Port of Rimini is a great historical and cultural relevance site representing an urban landmark for the city. Given its strategic position, important architectural monuments have been built around the canal over the past centuries. Together with the conformation of the canal itself, which crosses the city, these elements led to some criticalities in terms of accessibility and mobility efficiency in the area, that are often not adequate to the current needs. Transportation comfort is a fundamental prerogative to implement sustainable mobility solutions. As part of the European Interreg project “FRAMESPORT”, which aims at the global and sustainable growth of minor ports of the Adriatic Sea, this contribution presents a detailed analysis of the area to detect the criticalities that hinder the urban regeneration of the Canal Port of Rimini. The analysis method adopted is based on the data collection, carried out with the stakeholders’ involvement, to elaborate a participatory project responding to users’ needs. The survey provides a detailed overview of the urban and historical-cultural context and shows the relationship between theCanal Port, the environment, and its infrastructures. The research aims to demonstrate that re-shaping the existing transport network – which represents a key role in the interconnection and continuity of the urban landscape - permits the regeneration of an urban area without upsetting its historically consolidated asset. Moreover, it seeks to highlight that the improvements in micro-mobility, together with punctual regeneration interventions, also contribute to improving the life quality and comfort of the surrounding area

“Dialogue between Translators and Authors. The Example of Claudio Magris”

    No full text
The paper focuses on the forms of cooperation between authors and their translator(s) in all cases in which the two operate simultaneously. This issue is explored on the example of the Trieste-born author Claudio Magris, who cultivates a very close relationship with most of his translators. Writing and translation have been coexisting in this author throughout his career and have resulted in the heightened sensitivity of Magris the author with regards to translation, as the first part of the analysis shows. The second part describes the dialogue between Magris and the translators of his works, and ends with the more general question of the significance and role of such a form of exchange
