Chinese market as a source of global innovation: Foreign MNCs’ R&D Activities in China

    No full text
This paper studies the influence of host country peculiarities on R&D activities of foreign MNCs in China. Through case study approach, we analyzed four Italian companies that have R&D and innovative activities in China. We found that innovation activities of foreign MNCs in China are affected by host country characteristics on three dimensions: state intervention; local competition, and local market peculiarities. We show how Chinese competitive context can be a source of global innovation if stimuli are properly received at both local and corporate level and we derive a taxonomy of innovation that might originate from foreign MNCs’ R&D activities in China. Our case studies confirm an evolution path of foreign R&D activities from an exploitative to an explorative nature. Finally, future research directions are suggested

Disruptive Innovation... in Reverse: Adding a Geographical Dimension to Disruptive Innovation Theory

    No full text
Based on a literature review on disruptive innovation and innovation from emerging economies, we offer an interpretation of a subset of reverse innovation within the disruptive innovation theory. We argue that the combination of these two theories provides a useful framework to look at emerging economies as sources of new products and technological solutions. Finally, we provide a new categorization of disruptive innovation considering a geographical dimension and future research direction

Extending the Uppsala Model: disruptive innovation from a Chinese evolved subsidiary

The Uppsala Model of Internationalization (Johansson, Vahlne, 1977) has been widely discussed and refined both by scholars and its authors. Relying on these literary contributions and on the concept of disruptive innovation (Christensen, 1997), this paper aims at extending the stages of the internationalization process as intended by the Uppsala Model to a further step where firms get knowledge inputs from the foreign market for developing new products that have commercial value also in their previous markets. We use case study research for showing how a company relied on Chinese market inputs for developing new products that have disruptive characteristics on the Western markets

“I beg you to tell me what has become of Djamila”: The Political Mobilization of Simone de Beauvoir’s Readers During the Boupacha Affair

By Sophia Millman This is a condensed version of a Masters thesis dedicated to the political mobilization of Simone de Beauvoir’s readers. The citations from the letters were translated from French by the author. *** On June 2, 1960, the French government ordered all copies of the daily Algiers edition of Le Monde seized and destroyed to suppress the publication of Simone de Beauvoir’s article “Pour Djamila Boupacha.” Beauvoir, a self-professed “woman of letters”, not “of action[1]”, and one ..

A comparative study of form and theology in the works of Flannery O'Connor and Simone Weil

    No full text
In this comparative study of the form and theology of Flannery O'Connor and Simone Weil I interrogate how Weil's philosophical writings and her theology illuminate O'Connor's use of both narrative and non-fictional forms, and her Catholicism. The Introduction analyses how Weil's concept of superposed reading provides a new method of approaching both O'Connor, her writings, and O'Connor studies, and focuses on how such apparently different women interconnect. Chapter One explores how both Weil and O'Connor attempt to write their theologies on the souls of their readers yet are each subject to constraints imposed by form. Weil's concept of locating equilibrium between incommensurates is discussed, and her distinctively philosophical approach to fictions and fictionality is used to investigate O'Connor's notion of prophetic fictions and the writer's role. Chapter Two assesses how both writers revivify Christian paradoxes. Weil's monstrous concept of affiiction, and O'Connor's use of the grotesque genre to jolt secular man into an awareness of the sacred are scrutinised. Chapter Three studies how both writers consider an encounter between God and man is possible through the action of grace. My Conclusion interrogates how Weil's work can deepen our understanding of O'Connor's writings, and examines how successful O'Connor is at realising a truly Christian literature. I conclude that despite being a writer of powerful fictions, O'Connor can not be totally successful in her mission as writer-prophet because ultimately fiction escapes orthodoxy

Harnessing Electrostatic Forces: A Review of Bees as Bioindicators for Particulate Matter Detection

    No full text
Bees (Hymenoptera, Anthophila) are widely recognized for their essential ecological roles, including pollination and biodiversity maintenance. Recently, their ability to collect environmental particulate matter through electrostatic forces has been explored for biomonitoring purposes. This review integrates knowledge on electrostatic pollen adhesion with emerging insights into particulate matter adhesion to bees, emphasizing their potential as bioindicators. The mechanisms of electrostatic adhesion, influenced by factors such as the physicochemical properties of particulate matter and bee morphology, are discussed in detail. Additionally, the study evaluates the adhesion efficiency of pollutants, including heavy metals, microplastics, nanoplastics, pathogens, pesticides, radionuclides, and volatile organic compounds. This multidisciplinary approach underscores the role of bees in advancing environmental monitoring methodologies and offers innovative tools for assessing ecosystem health while addressing the drivers of bee decline
