The Introduction of the Euro and Economic Growth: some Panel Data Evidence
We use a difference in difference estimation framework to analyse the effects of the adoption of the euro on the level of per capita GDP for a sample of seventeen European countries (the EU15 plus Norway and Iceland) over the period 1990–2010. We find that the adoption of the euro may have raised the level of per capita GDP (and labour productivity) by about 4 percent. There is also some evidence that the impact of the euro has been smaller in the case of countries with a high debt-to-GDP ratio in 1999 when the euro was introduced. Results are robust to controlling for country fixed effects, time trends and to estimation strategies that control for cross-country parameter heterogeneity

The Italian Productivity Decline: Evidence from Regional Data
In this paper the evolution of labour productivity and TFP is analysed for the Italian regions at the sector level over the period 1980-2004 using growth accounting techniques. The results suggest that the decline in productivity after 1995 has been widespread across sectors and regions, although in southern Italy the decline has been weaker; in turn, TFP growth seems to have been the major responsible for both the decline of labour productivity growth and for explaining regional labour productivity growth differentials. The estimation of a TFP growth model inspired to the Neo-Schumpeterian Growth Theory suggests that a key role in driving the different pattern in TFP growth between northern and southern regions may have been played by catching up processes, as regions that were far away from the technological frontier, mainly located in the south, have displayed faster TFP growth. The econometric results also suggest that spillover effects, R&D and, to a lesser extent, human capital may have been important drivers of the rate of innovation over the sample period

Type of Employers and Fertility of Working Women: Does Working in the Public Sector or in a Large Private Firm Matter?
This work investigates how fertility rates of working women have been influenced by employer characteristics (public versus private sector and small versus large firms) and features of the employment contracts using a representative sample of Italian working women in the last 30 years of the twentieth century. In particular, we find that women working in the public sector have a higher probability of having a child during a working spell than women working in the private sector. Furthermore, women working in large private sector firms, who enjoy stronger employment protection, have a higher probability of having a child than those working in smaller firms. In turn, more-stable contracts also increase the likelihood of having a child during a working spell. Results are robust to controlling for individual unobserved heterogeneity and for the possible endogeneity of working in the public sector
