    No full text

    Multi-sampling Asymmetric Dual-Edge Digital Pulse-width Modulator

    No full text
Digital controls are generally characterized by significant phase delays due to the analog-to-digital conversion process, sampling time, algorithm computation time, and the digital pulse-width modulator's architecture. Usually, the delay introduced by the latter has a more significant impact than previous ones, especially when approaching the switching frequency. The multi-sampling operation is largely adopted to reduce this delay. Recently proposed, double-sampling asymmetrical dual-edge (ADE) carrier-based digital pulse-width modulators (DPWM) have proven to operate with zero phase delay. Therefore, the multi-sampling architecture might provide even better results. Unfortunately, its documented operating point dependence does not allow such modulators to be used effectively. This article examines an improved multi-sampling ADE-DPWM architecture where the dependency on the operating point is significantly reduced. This manuscript also includes an accurate small-signal transfer function model. The proposed architecture and the developed small-signal model are validated in simulation and experimentally. In addition, experimental tests on a multi-loop voltage-controlled single-phase voltage-source inverter revealed the advantages of the proposed architecture over the more traditional DPWM one based on a trailing-triangle edge carrier

Multi-sampling Digital Pulse-width Modulator based on Asymmetric Dual-Edge Carrier

In the domain of digital control systems, significant phase delays stem from various factors, such as analog-to-digital conversion, finite sampling frequency values, algorithm computation time, and the digital pulsewidth modulator (DPWM). Typically, the delay introduced by DPWMs has a more substantial impact than the preceding factors. While numerous approaches have been proposed to mitigate or eliminate such delays, multisampling stands out as one of the most commonly employed methods. However, recent innovative architectures, particularly those based on the asymmetric dual-edge (ADE) carrier, have demonstrated that digital pulsewidth modulation (PWM) with zero phase delay, or even positive phase gain, can be effectively implemented. This suggests the possibility of further enhancing dynamic performance by increasing the number of samples per cycle. Unfortunately, the potential benefits of multisampling may be compromised by the operating point dependence issues inherent in ADE-DPWM. This article introduces a comprehensive architecture and a conclusive design approach for multisampling ADE-DPWM, facilitating the harnessing of multisampling benefits without encountering operating point issues. The experimental verification includes assessments of small-signal responses and robustness against operating point variations. Additional experimental tests are conducted to emphasize the improved dynamic performance compared to state-of-the-art trailing-triangle edge carrier-based modulators

In the growing malpractice context, claims for missed diagnosis of foetal malformations present different and complex medico- legal problems. They need to be deeply analysed in these three main aspects: the identification of the possible clinician’s error, the type of information given to the woman about the foetal wellbeing and the damage evaluation. We present a peculiar case, in which the main problems are clarifying if the foetal malformation was recognizable during prenatal life (and when) and verifying the hypothesis that the missed identification of the foetal malformation was due to its actual absence at the moment of the foetal ultrasound examination contested

The competent middle manager. Framing individual knowledge in North-East Italian SMEs

    No full text
In SMEs, where organisational structures and management systems are usually informal and where some key people represent the main and sometimes exclusive repository of knowledge, studying individuals, analysing the nature of their knowledge, identifying their personal characteristics and how these relate to individual and business performance, constitute a strategic area of research (at the moment almost unexplored), potentially rich of implications in terms of human resource management systems’ design. This paper represents a first attempt in this direction of research. It uses competency modelling for assessing the nature and types of individual knowledge developed in SMEs, presenting research results on a country, Italy, where SMEs represent the backbone of the economy. They show that ‘best’ (most effective) middle managers perceive their organisational role as wider than their colleagues and have a repertoire of competencies comparatively more aligned with firm’s expectations and requirements

The adoption of corporate e-learning in Italy

The diffusion process of e-learning has been, in recent years, at the centre of several studies. These researches focused mainly on the USA case, where there has been an exponential adoption both in the public and private sectors. From this perspective the paper would give a contribution to understand the diffusion process of e-learning in a specific country and it deals with the following questions: are there relevant consistencies in the rate and the model of adoption of e-learning solutions in Italian companies? What are the causes of this process? Building on bandwagon theories and institutional literature, the paper analyses the antecedents of the adoption process in Italy, asking whether it is determined by the rational search for economic benefits, or is it driven by the fear of lost legitimacy or strategic advantage under institutional or competitive bandwagon pressures. The paper also looks into the solutions adopted by the Italian firms, studying their e-learning strategies. To answer the research questions and to test the related propositions, an empirical study has been developed based on a survey, on interviews and document analysis. Since the e-learning diffusion process in Italy is at an early stage, the research has been undertaken in two sectors, pharmaceutical and banking, where e-learning has been adopted to a greater extent than in other sectors
