TWIN CITY NATURAL FOOD CO-OPS: THE ROLE OF CUSTOMER PREFERENCES AND CHARACTERISTICS WHEN CHOOSING AMONG STRUCTURAL OPTIONS
Get PDFThe demand for natural foods has been growing steadily over the past decade. As more mainstream grocers and investor-owned, natural food chains respond to this increased demand, the viability of local, independent natural food co-ops (TCNFCs) was used to assess organizational options. The study employed a customer survey to determine characteristics and preferences of co-op shoppers. The survey results were used in conjunction with a schema that analyzed the interaction among market forces, store differences, and customer factors to make recommendations to the TCNFCs. This analysis suggests that in the short run, these stores should employ a federated cooperative structure to accommodate a city-wide co-op membership and increase joint ventures among the co-ops. No full textIn the context of higher education, the terms internship and cooperative education program (co-op) refer to the integration of some form of workplace experience within a student's program of study. Internships and co-ops differ substantially from student's extracurricular part-time or full-time income generating work activities because they are focused on the attainment of learning outcomes, rather than payment for work. The terms internship and co-op are sometimes used interchangeably to refer to a variety of work experience programs. However, substantial longer term work experience activities (e.g., full-time work activities for the duration of a semester) that are systematically embedded in a higher education program are often referred to as co-ops, while the term internships is often used to describe smaller scale work placement or experience activities (e.g., part-time or fulltime work activities for the duration of several days or weeks) or substantial longer term work experiences similar to co-ops. Effective Cooperation: A new role for cotton producer co-ops in Mali
Get PDFFalling prices and increased privatization had left small-scale cotton producers in Mali facing an uncertain future. In particular, the role of the state-owned cotton company, on which farmers depended for essential services such as inputs and training, had been greatly diminished. In response, a new initiative involving a coalition of partners has helped to build the capacity of producers’ co-operatives to provide services to their own members. It has also helped them to build sustainable partnerships with lending institutions and has increased the participation of women farmers in the running of cotton co-ops. It is now hoped that the programme can be rolled out to the whole of Mali’s cotton sector
