The following article regards the study of medieval settlements in Formigine, a small town in the south-west of Modena. During September 2002 a survey has been carried out to collect data about development of rural settlement through-out the Middle Ages. Anyway all data about other ages have been taken into consideration, as there have been discovered a lot of finds dated to Bronze Age and to Roman Age. The study of medieval settlements, above all between VI and XI century, is very difficult because there are few chronological markers, moreover many years of ploughing and the growing spread of vineyards and woods keep from a high visibility. Therefore we have to read the results of this research considering those limits. The settlement results very rarefied until XIV century, then we see a gradual recovery between XIV and XVIII century. This conclusion becomes part of the general development of medieval settlement in Modena's plan
Quarantine: can lessons from the past help improve disease response?
COVID-19 continues to be a public health crisis, while severely impacting global
financial markets causing significant economic and social hardship. As with any
emerging disease, pharmaceutical interventions required time, emphasizing the initial and continuing need for non-pharmaceutical interventions. We highlight the role of
anthropological and historical perspectives to inform approaches to non-pharmaceutical interventions for future preparedness
The Landscapes of Disease and Death in Colonial Mauritius
The recurring ebb and flow of epidemic diseases had a profound impact on the way colonial administrations dealt with death. This article focuses on the role disease played in shaping the ‘necrogeography’ of colonial landscapes, a key point of intersection between funerary and landscape archaeology. Using an extensive corpus of evidence from cemeteries that capture inhumation practices from both formerly enslaved and indentured populations, this article provides an assessment of these burial contexts as part of the cultural landscape in Mauritius. Drawing together functional and emotional dimensions, their features and development will be considered against the backdrop of the island’s specific and dynamic disease ecology
The supply capacity and forms of water management are among the parameters for measuring the state of hygiene and sanitary practices of a medieval city. For the settlements of the north Adriatic lagoon, first and foremost the city of Venice, this issue is part of the broader one of control over the unstable balance between fresh and brackish water. The present contribution, through the review of the archaeological documentation of the last years and the presentation of the still unpublished excavation data collected during the recent research in the lagoon site of Jesolo, aims to contribute to the critical analysis regarding the birth and diffusion of the "Venetian style wells." The study aimed not only at the historical center of Venice, but also at the neighborhood settlements and islands, makes it possible to trace the prodromes of the highly efficient solutions achieved in the final centuries of the Middle Ages for the retrieval and storage of drinking water in the lagoon environment
