Gastrointestinal parasitoids represents a common problem associated with ovine breeding.
Nowadays only old and potentially harmful pharmacological therapies are available in order to control this disease in animal, leading to a need of an alternative and more reliable approach to solve this problem. Our study is aimed to screen the actual local ovine population in order to select the healthy animal and narrowing the pharmacological treatment only where necessary.
The study was carried out in an organic Massese’s flock and was focused on the parasite burden monitoring and the control of animal resilience. Faecal (for FEC) and blood samples (for haematocrit) were collected twice a month on 84 ewes during 14 months.
Our results could be profitably used in development of local healthy breeds, avoiding pharmacological treatments in accordance with a more eco-compatible productive systems
La resistenza genetica alle parassitosi gastrointestinali: esperienze condotte sulla razza ovina massese
RIASSUNTO La ricerca è stata condotta in un allevamento di pecore di razza Massese, allo scopo di valutare i coefficienti di ereditabilità e ripetibilità dei principali caratteri fenotipici legati alla resistenza alle strongilosi gastrointestinali: conta fecale di uova ed ematocrito. Il coefficiente di ereditabilità della conta di uova nelle feci è risultato piuttosto basso con un valore di 0.10, mentre leggermente superiore è stato quello di ripetibilità pari a 0.16. Per l’ematocrito i valori sono decisamente più favorevoli, rispettivamente di 0.22 e 0.58. I risultati ottenuti per quest’ultimo parametro forniscono indicazioni interessanti sulla possibilità di adottare idonei piani di miglioramento genetico per questi parametri. Per la conta fecale di uova si rilevano valori tendenzialmente bassi che evidenziano la necessità di ulteriori approfondimenti. SUMMARY In small ruminants gastrointestinal parasitosis represent a severe limit to the quality of productions and animal welfare. The difference between the dissimilar levels of sheep’s infection in the flock is a relevant marker of the high variability about the gastrointestinal parasite resistance. In fact, there is considerable interest in the assessment of the resistance of a parasitised host, especially for nutrition and breeding studies. The aim of this work is the evaluation, in a farm of ovine Massese’s breed, of heritability and repeatability coefficients about the main phaenotipic traits connected with resistance to gastrointestinal strongylosis: faecal egg count and packed cell volume. Animals were tested eight times, during periods of moderate and high elmints infestations. One faecal sample per animal was collected and processed in order to determine the faecal egg count, using the modified McMaster tecnique by Permin and Hansen, transforming the values obtained into natural logarithm log (FEC + 25). At the time of faecal collection, the animal also underwent blood analyses for determination of haematocrit. These preliminary results show that heritability coefficient of faecal egg count was quite low, with a value of 0.10; repeatability coefficient was little higher, with a value of 0.16. Packed cell volume genetic values were clearly more favourable, presenting respectively 0.22 (heritability) and 0.58 (repeatability). These results, derivate from first italian studies on Massese’s breed, can give an interesting direction on the possibility to adopt suitable genetic improvement plans for gastrointestinal parasite resistance and, in particular, low coefficients of faecal egg count underline the needs of further significant investigations

Influenza delle strongilosi gastrointestinali su alcuni parametri chimico-clinici in un gregge di razza Massese allevato con metodo biologico
Parasitic gastro-enteric diseases represent one of the most critical management challenge in ovine flock, especially in organic breeding. The aim of this work is to point out the possible relationships between biochemical haematic parameters and parasitic nematode infection, as markers of a physiological disorder. A flock of 84 Massese sheeps was surveyed for 12 months, in order to achieve faecal (faecal egg count-FEC) and blood samples (non esterified fatty acids-NEFA, white blood cells-WBC, total protein-TP and triglycerides-TR). FEC was directly related with NEFA and WBC, while it was inversely correlated with TP and TR. Besides, hypoproteinaemia condition was associated with a level of 1720 egg per gram (EPG), whereas 1350 EPG seems to determine a pathologic high NEFA concentration. Taken together, these results prove that gastrointestinal nematode infection reflect in a significant variation in haematic parameters involved in energetic metabolism, important welfare-state indicators. This altered parameters in sheeps can be used as useful markers of sub-clinical nematode infection diseases, a frequent but often ignored ovine pathology
L' industria delle Carni e le Denominazioni di Razza: Ruolo degli strumenti Genomici ai fini della Tracciabilità
In the last decade, consumer concerns over food safety and request for information about food producers have increased following alarms about food contamination and animal epidemics. As a consequence, compulsory livestock traceability systems have been implemented all along the production chains, based on paper certifications and electronic support. concurrently, changes in customer demand have led to a rising request for typical and traditional products, linked to specific geographic regions, and expression of historic and cultural heritage of local areas. In such scenario, we assist to an increasing interest by the meat industry in developing techniques to certify the breed origin of meat products, since livestock breed names are increasingly being seen as brand names and they could represent powerful marketing tools for developing sustainable production systems in many marginal areas. Tests for breed identity are therefore useful means for validating origin and authenticity of livestock products. We report the use of a likelihood ratio approach appliewd to STR loci to confirm the feasibility of a genomic traceability system for the verification and protection of the Chianina origin of meat cuts. We also consider a different methodology based on the research of possible breed-specific polymorphisms in coat color genes in cattle
Trueness, precision, time-efficiency and cost analysis of chairside additive and subtractive versus lab-based workflows for manufacturing single crowns: An in vitro study
Purpose: To evaluate the trueness, precision, time efficiency, and cost of three different workflows for manufacturing single crowns (SCs). Methods: A plaster model with a prepared tooth (#15) was scanned with an industrial scanner, and an SC was designed in computer-assisted-design (CAD) software. Ten SCs were printed with a hybrid composite (additive chairside) and a stereolithographic (SLA) printer (Dfab®), 10 SCs were milled in lithium disilicate (subtractive chairside) using a chairside milling unit (inLab MC XL®), and 10 SCs were milled in zirconia (lab-based) using a five-axis laboratory machine (DWX-52D®). All SCs were scanned with the same scanner after polymerization/sinterization. Each scan was superimposed to the marginal area of the original CAD file to evaluate trueness: absolute average (ABS AVG), root mean square (RMS), and (90 ̊–10 ̊)/2 percentile were calculated for each group. Marginal adaptation and quality of the occlusal and interproximal contact points were also investigated by two prosthodontists on 3D printed and plaster models. Finally, the three workflows’ time efficiency and costs were evaluated. Results: Additive chairside and subtractive lab-based SCs had significantly better marginal trueness than subtractive chairside SCs in all three parameters (ABS AVG, p < 0.01; RMS, p < 0.01; [90 ̊–10 ̊]/2, p < 0.01). However, the two prosthodontists found no significant differences between the three manufacturing procedures in the quality of the marginal closure (p = 0.186), interproximal (p = 0.319), and occlusal contacts (p = 0.218). Both time efficiency and cost show a trend favoring the chairside additive workflow. Conclusions: Chairside additive technology seems to represent a valid alternative for manufacturing definitive SCs, given the high marginal trueness, precision, workflow efficiency and low costs. Statement of clinical relevance: Additive chairside manufacturing of definitive hybrid composite SCs is now possible and shows high accuracy, time efficiency, and competitive cost
