Seel in historic fabric: concealment vs hightilighting
The steel material has changed over time its role in the historic building, passing from the first one linked to the purely technical aspects of consolidation, to the second one, where it is considered a project item with specific intents in the design act. Certainly, these two roles are correlated to different way to use the steel, employed for metallic elements disguised by the existing material or, on the contrary, for components put in view. On the one hand, the rehabilitation project uses metal components for theirs high structural performances, placing them in an hidden position; on the other hand, the transformation project uses steel as a material capable of operating the renovation, finding in the Italian tradition an important technical and formal experimentation, which shows the ability to overlay to the historic layers the ones related to the contemporary culture.
The binomial between concealment and exposure of the added elements is the investigation field of
this research, which explores the delicate boundary between the visible and invisible sphere as a
pretext to understand the dynamics of the Italian design for the built heritage, known for ranging from
conservation to transformation: the duality between these two poles gives to different levels of
evidence the task of defining the steel role
Public reconstruction after L’Aquila 2009 earthquake: the case study of the ex-nursery school in “Viale Duca degli Abruzzi”
Following L’Aquila 2009 earthquake, the complex process of recon-struction of public heritage, which is still ongoing, began. The renovation works with seismic improvement of the ex-nursery school in “Viale Duca degli Abruzzi”, recently completed, concerned a building built between the 30s and 40s of the twen-tieth century, originally designed for the social purposes of the National Organi-zation for the Protection of Maternity and Childhood (O.N.M.I.) as “Mother and Child’s House”.
The construction is a typical expression of rationalist architecture: following the violent earthquake of 2009, it didn’t have significant damage, that is a sign of the building’s good behavior towards both static and seismic loads. In fact, the improvement of the structural behavior versus seismic actions was achieved with minimally invasive interventions.
From a functional point of view, the project confirmed the building’s voca-tion to host a collective service, like a senior center and youth space. The project respects the conservation cultural heritage criteria, but, at the same time, satisfies the contemporary needs for reuse adding new volumes in steel. The material con-trast between old and new underlines the recognisability of the additions, without competing with the architectural elements of the rationalist tradition, appropriately preserved
Ancient Materials and Steel: Project Strategies on Contents and Containers of Museums in Post-war Italian Period
The post-war reconstruction is an opportunity for Italy to establish the characters of its identity and opening debates on the conservation of existing architectural assets. The recovery of the old buildings finds in the museum function the opportunity to re-establish a connection with history both in content (such as memory place) and in the container (as an object to be transmitted to the future). The evolution of use of steel in the museums of the post-war period is in line with this double interpretation, acting first only on the artworks supports, and later on the same construction. In contents or containers steel is expressed by different formal and linguistic values, giving to the context a specific semantic sense. Acting on the contents, it becomes functional to the creation of a space architected according to the tones of harmony (as in Palazzo Bianco museum) or contrast respect to the existing (see Castello Sforzesco). Acting, instead, on the container, the metal material takes part of the architectural object, both if it operates according to the logic of fragmentation (Castelvecchio museum is an example) or according to the addition of new volumes (as in Convento di Sant’Agostino in Genoa). This paper, which is a part of a broader research, aims to analyze different project strategies using steel in the Italian museums of the post-war reconstruction, in order to provide a tool for the interpretation of the contemporary language in the revitalization processes of the built heritage

Development and industrial organization have generated a strong division
of knowledge, turned to specialized aspects rather than the complex and the
complexity of the problems. The design craft, which ensures the collective
sharing of building, is replaced by the mass production that accentuates the
gap between design and technology. Yet, the machine civilization has
allowed the diffusion of materials, such as steel, with enviable technical
performance, a fortiori if it’s used in the recovery of cultural heritage, for
beeing easy to assemble in the constructive site and for the relation between
lightness and structural strenght which ensures the possibility to work on
the existing heritage without making substantial increases of loads on the
fabric already built.
The use of steel technology in the rehabilitation project had different
outcomes over the time, reaching the first synthesis in the Italian
experiments of the 50s and 60s: the design of the individual "pieces" of
construction, then produced in factory, allows the architects to project the
elements as unicuum. A design based on continuous cross-references
between the "whole" and the "part", carefully controlled in terms of
coherence and compatibility both internal and external, let to plan new
architectures, employing strategies that range from the formal re-definition
of existing volumes to the insertion of fragments as separate item, able to set
a dialectical relationship between the old heritage and the new one.
The present research wants to explore the first important moment for
legitimize steel as a material able to transform the existing assets, giving to it
a new identity, recognizable by the community as a product of his culture.
The contribution presents an analysis of Italian projects in order to provide a
tool for the validation of requalification processes for the cultural heritage
Entity and identity of metal additions in ancient buildings
The research investigates the role of steel in pre-existence, at first confined to consolidation,later extended to reuse. The metal artificial nature and the untraditional constructive system make more complex the issue of addition visibility in pre-existence, employed for static
purposes or functional aims. Anyway, the iron entity is expressed each time in a specific
way, which is compatible to the historic building, concealed among the masses involved, or highlighted in its essentiality
Metallic materials between restoration and rehabilitation
The technological innovation of the late 19th Century, and the need of to rebuild the historic centres damaged by the World Wars, set up the debate over the legitimacy of use of modern materials in the restoration of monuments and rehabilitation of ordinary buildings: In the post-war period, the theoretical position lead to the Restoration Charters: the attitude towards modern materials passes from a total trust to a balanced mistrust, especially when the conservation becomes the primary goal of the restoration project. In contrast, in the refurbishment of ordinary buildings, the Italian tradition moves from a discrete use of steel to a suggested by handbooks. This research wants to explain the different approaches to the metallic materials, highlighting theirs extraordinary potential, both technical and formal, to achieve the aim of conservation or transformation
Strumenti per il recupero del patrimonio costruito: relazioni tra normativa e manualistica nell'Italia post–bellica Tools for built heritage recovery: relationships between legislation and manuals in post–war Italy
In the last decades of the 20th century, the recovery of built heritage, that is considered a not to be wasted resource, became at the center of the architectural debate. However, the practice of worksite had not always lead to satisfactory results, penalized by an ever decreasing presence of specialized workers in the art of traditional construction. The first recovery manuals, in fact, were created with the aim of disseminating traditional construction techniques to promote the material and testimonial conservation of ancient buildings. Unlike 19th century manuals, however, those of the 20th century (and over) had to confront with current legislation (technical and otherwise), which inevitably had conditioned practice. Its continuous updating gives manuals a decisive role, regardless of their specialization, such as to make them complementary to the legislation itself. Their most significant contribution lies in having oriented the legislation towards technical solutions, arising from an initial cognitive moment, increasingly compatible with the existing and not very dissimilar to those used for the restoration of cultural buildings
