    Soybean development in India

    The regional research project RAS/82/002 is funded by the UNDP, and is implemented by the FAO and the ESCAP/CGPRT Centre. One of the important objectives is to identify and analyse socio economic constraints to increased production and efficient, distribution, and to formulate strategies to exploit economic, employment and nutritional potential of coarse grains and food legumes under varying farming systems. In line with its mandate, the CGPRT Centre was requested to implement socio-economic studies in selected countries of Asia. Initiated in late 1984, country studies were conducted in 7 countries, namely, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Nepal, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Selection of crops was based on their importance to the individual country and on the priority set by the CGPRT Centre, namely, selected pulses for the southern Asia subregion and either maize or soybean for Southeast Asian countries. The research report "Soybean Development in India" is the first in this series of country reports. It describes the impressive soybean development in several states in India, and analyses contributing factors towards its fast development.</p

    This volume is complied to record discussions at a working seminar on Agricultural Planning in Asia held during 13 to 24 April 1998 at the CGPRT Centre in Bogor, Indonesia. It contains country reports of fifteen participants from eleven countries in Asia and the Pacific and selected papers contributed by lecturers. The participants discussed, among other topics, the current situation of agricultural planning, and major issues and constraints to policy implementation in their countries and exchanged their experiences.</p

The research report "Coarse Grains and Pulses in Nepal: Role and Prospects" is the second in this series of country reports. It describes the role of coarse grains and pulses in commercial as well as in subsistence agriculture. Mr. Khadka points out that in Nepal the growth of food production is not keeping pace with population growth, and that increasing productivity is necessary for Nepal to maintain its self-sufficiency in food. Recent production increases can be ascribed to area expansion, while yields are diminishing. The report points out that area-specific research is necessary to increase productivity among subsistence farmers in the hilly and mountainous areas in Nepal.</p

    Sensitivity of soybean production to price changes : a case study in East Java

    The study was carried out in 1987/1988 as a supplement to Phase I of the Soybean Yield Gap Analysis Project (SYGAP) of the CGPRT Centre, the main objective of which is to develop suitable technology to increase farmers' soybean yield. The results of the study indicate that, at current relative prices, soybean is more profitable than alternative crops in Indonesia. More specifically, within a possible range of changes in current prices, soybean is in close competition with either rice or peanuts, while it enjoys a stronger competing position relative to maize in Indonesia. The application of improved technology will certainly result in an even better position for soybean.</p

    The CGPRT Centre has successfully completed a three-year research project, "Stabilization of Upland Agriculture and Rural Development in El Nino Vulnerable Countries (ELNINO)" (April 2000 &ndash; March 2003) in collaboration with five participating countries, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Thailand. The study entitled "Multilevel Impact Assessment and Coping Strategies against El Nino: Case of Food Crops in Indonesia" is the second phase of the El Nino study under this research project.</p

    The CGPRT Centre, as one of the subsidiary bodies of UN ESCAP, has been implementing various activities to contribute to alleviating poverty through promoting the sustainable development of agriculture, based on CGPRT crops in Asia and the Pacific region. CGPRT crops are a very important component of the farming system in the region, particularly in the marginal areas where economically, ecologically and socially less favorable conditions prevail, and many farmers&rsquo; activities and lives rely on CGPRT crops. Therefore, it is crucial to promote the sustainable production of CGPRT crops. Feed is an alternative end product of CGPRT crops, which is the reason why we implemented this project. The development of animal husbandry and demands for feed vary greatly from country to country. Therefore, we need to analyze them comparing among countries within the region. However, due to the limitation of the fund, the project initially focused on South Asian countries, namely India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.</p

    Economic assessment of selected resource management techniques in marginal upland agriculture : integrated report and proceedings of a workshop held in Seoul, Korea, May 20-22, 1998

    Recognizing the importance of sustainable development in upland agriculture, the CGPRT Centre implemented sustainability-related projects since 1993. The Centre completed a project &ldquo;Sustainable Upland Agriculture in Southeast Asia - A Study of Constraints and Prospects for its Development (SUASA-1)&rdquo; in 1995, and a follow-up project &ldquo;Economic Assessment of Selected Resource Management Techniques in Marginal Upland Agriculture (SUASA-2)&rdquo; in 1996. The SUASA-2 project was implemented in collaboration with partner organizations in China and India, the two biggest countries in Asia, where a considerable number of farmers are cultivating marginal uplands. Two case studies were conducted in each country to identify constraints to and prospects for sustainable resource management in marginal upland areas, with emphasis on economic effects of the applicable technologies. The case studies also aimed to characterize the transfer or adoption mechanism of resource management techniques and to suggest directions of sustainable resource management.</p

    The soybean commodity system in Indonesia

    In 1983, the Regional Co-ordination Centre for Research and Development of Coarse Grains, Pulses, Roots and Tuber Crops (CGPRT Centre), the Central Research Institute for Food Crops (CRIFC) and the Bogor Research Institute for Food Crops (BORIF) jointly undertook a socio-economic study on the Soybean Commodity System in Indonesia, at the request of the Director General of the Agency for Agricultural Research and Development (AARD). The study was initiated to shed light on the position of soybean in Indonesia. Presently, the country depends to a great extend on imports, a situation which causes serious concern to the Government of Indonesia. In order to improve the situation, the Government of Indonesia has launched an intensification and expansion program to increase productivity and production of soybean in the country. The study covers aspects of production, marketing, utilization and processing, demand and consumption, and government policy. The conclusions and recommendations intend to serve as a basis for future in-depth studies of the components of the soybean commodity system.</p

    Stabilization of upland agriculture under El Nino induced climatic risk : impact assessment and mitigation measures in Indonesia

    The El Nino-induced abnormal weather tends to be increasing in its frequency of occurrence, magnitude, duration and irregularity in recent years. Accordingly, it is urgent for rainfed upland agriculture, where most CGPRT crops are grown, to establish technological and institutional countermeasures to predict, avoid or minimize and recover from the damage caused by the abnormal weather, drought in particular. Responding to this vital need, the CGPRT Centre has been implementing a three-year research project, &ldquo;Stabilization of Upland Agriculture and Rural Development in El Nino Vulnerable Countries (ELNINO)&rdquo;, since April 2000 in collaboration with partners from five countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Thailand.</p

    In co-operation with the Agency for Agricultural Research and Development (AARD) and Central Research Institute for Food Crops (CRIFC), the CGPRT Centre organized a Workshop on Soybean Research and Development in Indonesia at Cipayung from 24 to 26 February 1987. From 1984 to 1987, the Centre focused part of its activities on soybean research. The results of these activities were shared, together with findings and observations of 106 scientists from all major research institutes in Indonesia and several overseas institutes
