La domus sentinate col mosaico di Aiòn:decorazione musiva e anomalie iconografiche

Previous careful “excavation” work in the archives had allowed the author to shed light on the little known antiquarian issues relating to the discovery, removal and sale to Duke Ludwig of Bavaria of the great multi-coloured mosaic of Aion at the centre of the zodiac and Tellus with the four seasons. The work was discovered in the first half of the nineteenth century in a town house in Sentinum (modern day Sassoferrato, in the province of Ancona). Now, some decades later, the author returns to the subject for a more detailed stylistic examination of the mosaic and of the mistakes and iconographic anomalies, especially in terms of the sequence of the signs of the zodiac, since the Sentinum mosaic only has eleven signs and these are not depicted in accurate astronomic order. This contribution re-launches the thesis that such incongruities and anomalies should be attributed to damage done by the excavators and nineteenth century restorers in cutting and later putting the panels back together when the great mosaic was sectioned to make transport to Munich possible and that it is preferable to attribute such mistakes and lack of understanding to groups of itinerant Italian mosaic makers working from “travelling” drawings of complex subjects who did not fully understand the deep astronomical and symbolic meaning

Studi e ricerche sul Castellum Firmanorum

The aim of the work is to shed light on the problem of the location of the ancient Castellum Firmanorum, the actual naval port of Firmum Picenum. Although there are references to it in various ancient historical sources, both literary and epigraphic, its location still remains largely unresolved. Starting from the “status quaestionis”, the work gathers together all the historical and archaeological data which are currently available, divides them into homogenous categories, and assesses them critically, supplementing them with accurate surface and aerial topographic observations. The analysis of the data collected in this way leads the author to place the river port of Firmum Picenum at the mouth of the present day River Ete, in the district of Salvano di Fermo, where there are significant archaeological remains. The historical analysis of this proposed location of the naval castle is further supplemented by an extensive “documentary appendix” of complete, previously unpublished, archive material. These include an interesting manuscript by Filippo Eugenio Mecchi, an incisive academic from Fermo, and information about pre-nineteenth century archaeological finds. The work ends with a practical index of names and important items cited in the text

The author provides a correction to the previous reading of the Roman boundary inscription from Bljušćevica near the village of Rastovac in the elevated hinterland of Trogir which was engraved in solid rock during the consulship of Publius Cornelius Dolabella. He also presents a new discovery of a cippus from the hamlet of Bašelovici in Grebaštica near Šibenik. The inscription reads Salto(ru)m F(inis) / Tariot(arum), designating the western boundary of the Tariote pastures

The work collects and summarises the results of decades of studies, excavations and research into the ancient Tifernum Mataurense (modern day S. Angelo in Vado, in the province of Pesaro-Urbino), an Apennine municipium in the upper Metauro valley, bordering the surrounding territories of Tifernum Tiberinum (Città di Castello), Sestinum (Sestino), Pitinum Pisaurense (Macerata Feltria), Urvinum Mataurense (Urbino) and Pitinum Mergens (Acqualagna). The issue of reconstructing historical borders and ancient transport systems is addressed both from an historical point of view, retracing and comparing the civic and religious history of the Tifernum communities, and from an archaeological point of view, by means of accurate references to the urban topography of the city, the physical geography of the area (mountains, rivers etc.) and to the persistence of roadways and place-names. Scattered yet still evident traces of land cultivation and Roman centuriation survive, mainly in the lowland Tifernum areas, to the east and to the west of the city, along the course of the River Metauro and adjoining two road axes which run alongside the river bed on opposite banks
