Numerical and Physical Modeling of Ponte Liscione (Guardialfiera, Molise) Dam Spillways and Stilling Basin

    No full text
The investigation of the safety conditions of hydraulic infrastructures such as dams is of great interest for safeguarding territories and assessing their risk level. Issues as design orverification ofstructures may be tackled numericallywith Computational Fluid Dynamics and experimentallywith physical models. This paper describes the 1:60 Froude scaled numerical model ofthe Liscione (Guardialfiera, Molise, Italy) dam spillway and the downstream stilling basin. The k-w SST turbulence model was chosen for closing the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS). The computation domain was discretized using a grid with hexagonal meshes. Experimental data have been gathered from the 1:60 scale physical model ofthe Liscione dam spillways and the downstream riverbed ofthe Biferno river built at the Laboratory of Hydraulic and Maritime Constructions of Sapienza University of Rome. The model is scaled according to the Froude number and fully-developed turbulent flow conditions have been reproduced at the model scale (Re > 10,000). From the analysis ofthe results of both the physical and the numerical models it is certainly clear how the dissipation tank is undersized and therefore insufficient to manage the energy content ofthe current output to the river. As a consequence, the flow is introduced into the riverbed with a high energy content, which impacts on an erodible bottom

L'interessamento polmonare in corso di polimisite/dermatomiosite e di connettivite mista.

    No full text

    L’amiloide e l’amiloidosi: classificazione, caratteristiche clinico-patogenetiche, orientamenti diagnostico-terapeutici.

SHIP2FAIR - Martini & Rossi: Integration of Solar Heat in Industrial Process - Preliminary evaluation

    No full text
SHIP2FAIR is a H2020 European funded project†, which aim to foster the integration of solar heat in industrial processes from the agro-food sector facilitating the integration of solar heat production in low temperature processes. Based on the assessment of the industrial process for the production of different spirits and the local solar potential in Pessione plant (TO) of Martini & Rossi - one of the four demosite of the project -, the preliminary results that guided the choice of the most suitable solar collectors (Fresnel) and the definition of the thermo-economic parameters for the solar plant are hereby presented. The preliminary assessment takes into account different perspectives from the industrial and economic point of view: the availability of suitable surfaces, the economics of the investment and the best processes to be fed by solar produced steam towards a preliminary techno-economic feasibility study. The starting points for the analysis have been the characterization of the thermal demand in terms of necessary temperature level (°C), overall consumption and time distribution. The following step has been the identification of the suitable collectors to be installed taking into account the thermal parameters presented before, the boundary conditions of the industrial facility (e.g. space available, orientation, etc.), the technical characteristics of the collector itself and the solar irradiation available considering the plant's location. Moreover, the complex thermal facility in the factory, constituted by multiple (3) gas boilers and a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant in two different but linked pressurized steam loops, is taken into account for the definition of the solar collectors configuration and their integration via the proper management of heat generators and storage. The calculations are based on the expected thermal (steam) production guaranteed by the solar collectors and avoided GHG based on the reduction of gas fired boilers consumption

Study and experimentation for a controlled laser cleaning of feathers

    No full text
This work focuses on the scientific experimentation and practical application of a laser cleaning methodology for the macaw (Ara ararauna) feathers of an ethnographic bow with arrows from the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the University of Turin. The fragility of the object and its unique degradation characteristics suggested the use of a very selective physical method, such as laser cleaning. Prior to the intervention, a comprehensive systematic experimentation phase was conducted including commonly used diagnostic techniques along with a rarely employed analysis for cultural heritage characterization: X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The aim of the experimentation was to gain a deeper understanding of the physical-chemical effects of laser irradiation. Through a dedicated experimental setup, optimal operating parameters for laser treatment of macaw feathers were determined. XPS analysis enabled the examination of the treated material and the assessment of potential surface alterations, thus allowing to precisely define the damage threshold. Following the comparison of different Nd:YAG(1064 nm) lasers, the Long Q-Switched mode provided better results and it was selected for the overall intervention. This laser ensures effective removal of deposits, selectivity and respect of the fragile substrate

Visceral leishmaniasis complicating a connective tissue disease: three case reports from Italy

    No full text
We report the occurrence of visceral leishmaniasis in three patients coming from the northern part of Italy treated with immunosuppressive drugs for different rheumatic conditions. This paper highlights the importance of adequate work-up in those patients presenting with serious clinical manifestations that can complicate, exacerbate or mimic a systemic connective tissue disorder. A prompt diagnosis is very important because visceral leishmaniasis has a high mortality and, if untreated, can be fatal

    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
