Spatio-Temporal Prediction for Fast Motion Vector Estimation in Video Coding
this paper, we propose a new fast algorithm to estimate motion vectors (MVs) in video coding applications; it is based on the correlation which is present in the MV fields. To evaluate the MV of each block of a coded frame, information on MVs of adjacent blocks is used to give a first MV estimate, which is then refined by performing block matching within a very small search area. A final analysis on the reconstruction error assures high image quality, close to that of the standard full-search algorithm, with the advantage of a significantly reduced computational complexity. Simulations on a H.263 video coder show the validity of the proposed approach. Area: Telecommunication systems Corresponding author: Sergio Carrato D.E.E.I., University of Trieste, v.
