A note on the simultaneous waring rank of monomials
In this paper, we study the complex simultaneous Waring rank for collections of monomials. For general collections, we provide a lower bound, whereas for special collections we provide a formula for the simultaneous Waring rank. Our approach is algebraic and combinatorial. We give an application to ranks of binomials and maximal simultaneous ranks. Moreover, we include an appendix of scripts written in the algebra software Macaulay2 to experiment with simultaneous ranks. © 2018 University of Illinois
The geometry of statistical models for two-way contingency tables with fixed odds ratios
We study the geometric structure of the statistical models for two-by-two contingency tables. One or two odds ratios are fixed and the corresponding models are shown to be a portion of a ruled quadratic surface or a segment. Some pointers to the general case of two-way contingency tables are also given and an application to case-control studies is presented
A Convergent Semi-Lagrangian Scheme for the Game ∞-Laplacian
We propose a new semi-Lagrangian scheme for the game infinity-Laplacian. We demonstrate the convergence of the scheme to the viscosity solution of the given problem, showing its consistency, monotonicity, and stability. The proof of this result is established following the Barles-Souganidis analysis. This analysis assumes convergence at the boundary in a strong sense and is applied to our proposed scheme, augmented with an artificial viscosity term
Special apolar subset: the case of star configurations
In this paper, we consider a generic degree d form F in n + 1 variables. In particular, we investigate the existence of star configurations apolar to F, that is the existence of apolar sets of points obtained by the n-wise intersection of r general hyperplanes of Pn We present a complete answer for all values of (d, r, n) except for (d,d+1,2) when we present an algorithmic approach
A scheme for the game p-Laplacian and its application to image inpainting
We propose a new numerical scheme for the game p-Laplacian, based on a semi-Lagrangian
approximation. We focus on the 2D version of the game p-Laplacian, with the aim to apply
the new scheme in the context of image processing. Specifically, we want to solve the so-called
inpainting problem, which consists in reconstructing one or more missing parts of an image using
information taken from the known part. The numerical tests show the reliability of the proposed
method and the advantages of taking a p > 1 in terms of execution time and accurac

Fusion of human sperm to prostasomes at acidic pH
Prostasomes are membranous vesicles (150-200 nm diameter) present in human semen. They are secreted by the prostate and contain large amounts of cholesterol, sphingomyelin and Ca2+. In addition, some of their proteins are enzymes. Prostasomes enhance the motility of ejaculated spermatozoa and are involved in a number of additional biological functions. The possibility that they may fuse to sperm has never been proved. In this work, we studied the fusion of sperm to prostasomes by using various methods (relief of octadecyl Rhodamine B fluorescence self-quenching, fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry) and we found that it occurs at acidic pH (4-5), but not at pH 7.5 pH-dependent fusion relies on the integrity of one or more proteins and is different from the Ca2+-stimulated fusion between rat liver liposomes and spermatozoa that does not require any protein and occurs at neutral pH. We think that the H+-dependent fusion of prostasomes to sperm may have physiological importance by modifying the lipid and protein pattern of sperm membranes
