    Conidiobolus antarcticus, a new species from continental Antarctica

    Conidiobolus antarcticus sp. nov. (Entomoplithorales: Ancylistaceae), was isolated from the antarctic mosses Scistidium antarctici and Hennediella heimii. It is the first record of an Entomophthorales species in continental Antarctica. This new fungus is distinguished from other species of the same genus in the size and shape of the primary conidia and zygospores, and in the disjunctive mycelial hyphae

    Microfungi were isolated from different moss species in Victoria Land. Twenty-eight taxa belonging to 18 genera were identified. New records for continental Antarctica were: Arthrobotrys superba, Conidiobolus sp., Penicillium minioluteum, Verticillium psalliotae and V. lamellicola. The most frequently isolated fungal species were: Cladosporium cladosporioides, Cryptococcus albidus, Cryptococcus laurentii, Geomyces pannorum var. pannorum, G. pannorum var. vinaceus, Mortierella antarctica, Cadophora malorum, Phoma herbarum and F. lecanii. Bryum pseudotriquetrum was the moss richest in fungal species. Within the Antarctic environment, moss is one of the microhabitats richest in microfungi, particularly in psychrophilic indigenous species

    Some filamentous fungi on grassland vegetation from Kenia

    Herbaceous plants endemic to native Kenyan grassland on the Marula Estate were assessed for their phylloplane fungal occurrence using leaf cultures on tap water agar. From 26 sampled plants, 261 fungal isolates representative of 58 genera and 92 taxa were identified. The principal filamentous fungi were of the genera: Alternaria, Bipolaris, Curvularia, Epicoccum, Fusarium, Nigrospora, Periconia, Phoma and Pithomyces. The fungal species that occurred most frequently were: Alternaria alternata aggreate (73%), Pithomyces chartarum (73%) Nigrospora sphaerica (42%), Torula herbarum (30%) and Microsphaeropsis olivacea (27%). Fungi of limited occurrence were: Didymosphaeria oblitescens, Doliomyces mysoriensis, Endophragmiella dimorphospora, Parapericonia angusii, Podospora minicaudata, Spegazzinia tessarthra, Sporormiella minima, Stagonospora vitensis, Stigmella effigurata and Truncatella conorum-piceae. It is postulated that the phylloplane of these endemic plants provides a niche for endemic fungi

    Collagenase production in an Antarctic strain of Arthrobotrys tortor Jarowaja

    This paper describes the results of a comparative screening between the nematophagous Antarctic fungus Arthrobotrys tortor and other species of that genus for the production of extracellular collagenases. The nematode species used in this study was Caenorhabditis elegans, feeding on Escherichia coli cultures. Determination of collagenase activity was made using insoluble collagen from bovine Achilles tendon and determining the amount of solubilized hydroxyproline produced. The results show that the total amount of collagenase produced by the Antarctic strain of A. tortor was about threefold higher than that observed for the other species. In the Antarctic strain, collagenase was shown to be a constitutive enzyme
