Information and communication technology and geographical clusters: opportunities and spread

    No full text
The widespread adoption of information and communication technologies (ICTs) characterising the recent competitive scenario has been of great interest to researchers and practitioners. Many studies have been carried out to provide answers to different questions concerning, for example, the impact of ICTs on organisations. the role of ICTs in the economic development, the opportunities given by ICTs' adoption to SMEs. In this paper, the opportunities provided by the adoption and implementation of ICT solutions in a particular SME-intensive productive. environment, the geographical cluster, are examined. To this end, first the ICT capabilities and their effects on the value-creating processes characterising a generic supply chain are analysed. Subsequently, the analysis is contextualised to geographical clusters in order to identify the more appropriate ICTs for cluster firms. Finally, the actual ICTs' spread within the Italian industrial districts is examined

New models of inter-firm networks within industrial districts

Recently several Italian Industrial Districts (IDs) have been characterized by a profound change. The affirmation of leader firms and the restructuring of inter-firm networks can be considered as the principal phenomena of the process of change in IDs. The main aim of this paper is to analyse the change in the IDs, focusing on the networking process among firms, which has been stressed as one of the most important distinctive characteristics of this production model. With this aim, a theoretical interpretative model is proposed to explain the formation of new models of inter-firm network within IDs. The model, based on the analysis of several empirical studies on Italian IDs presented in the literature, suggests a correlation between the formation of a more structured network and the leader firm's strategies of growth. Furthermore, the proposed model has been supported by the results of an empirical investigation. The empirical investigation, adopting a multiple-case approach, involves eight in-depth case studies on the leader firms operating in four Italian IDs. Through the analysis of the leader firms, a contribution to the identification of the main trajectories of change in inter-firm relationships within IDs has been given. In particular, it has been verified that the strategies of growth adopted by the leader firms have as a main dominant result the formation of 'structured inter-firm networks'

PPP for Public Infrastructure in Italy: Opportunity and Challenges

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the Public Private Partnerships (PPP) in Italy in order to highlight challenges and opportunities for a more effective adoption of PPP in Italy. In particular we analyze three key aspects that affect the PPP adoption and implementation, namely the institutional, organizational, and financial ones, and their changes over time. Design/methodology/approach – To reach the aim, we have conducted an empirical research, gathering qualitative and quantitative relevant information, to characterize three key dimensions affecting the PPP adoption and its effective implementation, namely the institutional, organizational, and financial dimension. Findings – The analysis of PPP in Italy reveals that, although it is a relatively recent practice, its use is widely spread in delivering public infrastructures. Nevertheless, there are still some shortcomings, related to administrative, financial, and legal issues, that make the application and use of PPP, although considerable in size, less effective and efficient in Italy than in some other countries. In order to overcome these limitations, different interventions are required in order to strength the practices and advance the body of knowledge. Practical implications – The study formulates useful recommendations for an effective implementation of PPP based on the analysis of the main constraints for the PPP's development in Italy. Originality/value – The study overcomes the gap of the existing literature on the Italian PPP that have analyzed the phenomenon under two different approaches. Some researchers have investigated the key aspects characterizing PPPs, by adopting a mono-dimensional perspective. Other studies have analyzed the extent of adoption and diffusion of PPP in Italy, by presenting data on PPP projects by sector and/or by types. This paper contributes to fill this gap by providing both a comprehensive analysis of PPP, based on three key dimensions characterizing the PPP adoption and implementation, as well as by presenting an updated picture of the PPP in Italy
