New Experimental Data on Resistance of a Displacement Catamaran through Systematic Variations of Displacement, Clearance and Stagger
Experimental Investigation on Two Displacement Catamarans: Systematic Variation of Displacement, Clearance & Stagger
The aim of this study has been the evaluation of the effects due to the variation of longitudinal stagger, transverse separation and displacement on the resistance of two symmetric hull forms suitable for catamaran configuration over a speed range corresponding to Fn < 0.5.
To achieve this aim at the Dipartimento di Ingegneria Navale di Napoli (DIN) an intensive experimental investigation has been carried out on two models in three configurations: monohull, symmetric and staggered catamaran.
In particular, for one model, 6 clearances in the symmetrical configuration and 4 longitudinal staggers have been tested; for the other one 3 clearances and 3 staggers have been tested.
The influence of displacement on resistance has been evaluated by testing the models for three different displacements

The Impact of New Marpol Regulations on Bulk Carrier Design: A Case Study
This paper aims at investigating upon the influence on bulk carrier design of the new regulations concerning prevention
of oil spills from bunker tanks.
At first a brief review of the incoming amendments to the MARPOL 73/78 regulations will be performed. Within such
context reference will be made to both the deterministic and the probabilistic approaches. A case study will be therefore
carried out taking as reference a recently built Panamax size bulk carrier ship: the most appropriate solutions in terms of
bunker tank arrangement will be sought to ensure the required level of environmental safety to be guaranteed. The
relative effectiveness of the proposed design solutions will be explored using the probabilistic oil outflow analysis
technique as implemented in the latest amendments of the incoming MARPOL 73/78 regulations. Starting from the
analysis of the considered rules and the results of the proposed case study, some suggestions will be given concerning the
development of guidelines for bunker tank arrangement in bulk carrier ships
Crashworthiness of a Composite Wing Section: Numerical Investigation of the Bird Strike Phenomenon by Using a Coupled Eulerian–Lagrangian Approach
Crashworthiness is defined as the capability of a structure to guarantee its occupants safety during a crash event. In the present work, the crashworthiness of a composite wing section, subjected to a bird strike event, has been investigated. Indeed, the mechanical behavior of the impacted wing section has been inspected by means of the FE code Abaqus/Explicit. The impact phenomenon has been numerically simulated with a coupled Eulerian–Lagrangian (CEL) approach. The impacted structure has been modeled considering a Lagrangian formulation, while a Eulerian one has been used to model the bird. Moreover, Eulerian–Lagrangian contacts are used for transfer the loads arising from the impact event to the Lagrangian structure. The proposed numerical model, capable to take into account the matrix and fiber traction and compression damages, uses a 3D finite element approach to better predict the deformations and the damages onset and propagation during the impact event. The numerical results, in terms of structural deformation and damage onset and propagation, have been obtained by considering different impact locations and different impact angles
