    Intersectionalities, dis/abilities and subjectification in deaf LGBT people: An exploratory study in Sicily

    The article discusses the multiple discrimination, normalization and stigmatization experienced by deaf LGBT youth in Sicily, Italy, on the basis of a study of their everyday life (specifically school years and peer interactions). So far in Italy, very little attention has been paid to multiple discrimination and, specifically, to homophobic violence towards disabled individuals. It is, therefore, impossible to consider any valid sampling of the desired population and very few reports have been produced. The authors, a sociologist and a psychologist, carry out an analysis of the results obtained from interviews with 15 LGBT individuals recruited through social networks, thematic chats, and associations. This preliminary analysis aims at identifying the key arguments which could form the basis for future strategic inclusion programs and further research projects

    The chapter analyzes the concept of microaggression by detaching it from its psychological origins and instead linking it to the dimensions of privilege. In doing so, the chapter focuses on the power of the “unmarked,” arguing that understanding microaggressions requires entering the (in)visible regimes of what is taken for granted. Unmarked categories lie in the background of social interactions and take on a hegemonic character, shaping the way we understand and reproduce the social world. Cognitive and cultural attention is directed toward what is marked (the figure), while the unmarked (the background) is equated with obviousness and normality. This naturalization of standards contributes to normalizing and rendering hegemonic identities invisible. In contrast, marked categories are perceived as more homogeneous and are often associated with abnormality, deviance, and lower social value. The essay highlights how microaggressions function as an invisible tool for regulating the power of unmarked systems of domination (whiteness, ableism, hetero-cis-sexism). Their characteristics—invisibility, apparent insignificance due to their everyday and cumulative nature, contexts of unawareness, normalization, and ambiguity—make them effective in maintaining systems of privilege and oppression. In other words, "normality"—which corresponds to unmarked categories—controls difference through various mechanisms. This essay also develops a critique of traditional studies on microaggressions, which are often overly focused on the behavior and unconscious motivations of the social actor. Instead, it proposes an alternative harm-based approach—one that shifts the emphasis from the act and the actor to the real impact and the different forms of harm (epistemic, emotional, existential). The conclusions of this reasoning are particularly compelling, as the authors note that analyzing harm helps to understand how an “invisible” dimension can produce not only individual suffering but, more importantly, widespread and collective social harm. For this reason, analyzing microaggressions through a harm-based approach provides a critical lens to understand and challenge structural social inequalities

    This chapter aims to challenge heterosexual norms in society by analyzing heterosexual families when confronted with the coming out of one of their children. Starting with the essentialist construction of identities and gender norms supported by the symbolic structure of the natural and traditional (straight) family, we reconstruct paths and dynamics of the response that heterosexual parents give to their LGBTQ2 children. Specifically, this contribution outlines the characteristics of the disclosure processes of homosexual children and the related reactions to such shocking and disorienting events of their families. Finally, we offer parents some good practices to react well and be welcoming to their LGBTQ2 children when they decide to come out of the closet with them. It is vital to have a positive reaction and construct a new way to be mothers and fathers, not only for the immediate response during adolescence but also in the long term, when their children will become independent adults

    La sessualità è una delle dimensioni umane che hanno ricevuto maggiori forme di controllo, regolamentazione e normalizzazione. In particolare, essa è divenuta argomento di studio tramite approcci essenzialisti riconducibili al concetto di scientia sexualis, che proponeva una sessualità monolitica, ancorata ai concetti di giusto e sbagliato, morale e immorale, normale e anormale. dipendentemente dalle culture e organizzazioni di riferimento. Ancora oggi, nonostante le riflessioni in chiave simbolico-interazionista offerta da autori quali Garfinkel, Goffman e Simon e Gagnon, la sessualità appare regolamentata dal discorso medico e legata a doppio nodo dalla dimensione morale. Anche le discipline sociologiche e criminologiche non sono state esenti dagli influssi delle concezioni moralistiche della sessualità sviluppate in epoca tardovittoriana, e con difficoltà hanno rinunciato all’impalcatura bio-psico-medica per considerare l’atto sessuale come un fenomeno umano ancorato a precisi significati simbolici, condivisi, rielaborati e adattati costantemente all’interno delle interazioni umane e luenzati e capaci di esercitare ancora un forte e decisivo controllo in ogni aspetto della sessualità dell’individuo.Sexuality is one of the human dimensions that have received major forms of control, regulation and normalization.
