For the past thirteen years, she has worked as a photojournalist, documenting women’s lives in forty countries. She has published four acclaimed photo books which bring together inspiring stories with gorgeous photographs to motivate her readers to engage with, learn from and support women around the world. All of Gianturco’s books are philanthropic projects, for which she donates her royalties to carefully selected nonprofit organizations that relate to each book\u27s content. Paola\u27s most recent book, Women Who Light the Dark, tells the story of local women around the world who are helping one another tackle the problems that darken their lives—including violence, poverty, illiteracy and disease. No full textEste es un libro con sabor a manifiesto que refiere la necesidad de mayores espacios de encuentro y diálogo entre quienes siguen a su manera la trama histórica de Cali, y desde ahí, con un público bastante variopinto tal cual la sociedad de nuestros días. Pensado y escrito al mismo tiempo en que en esta ciudad las voces de jóvenes llamaban a tomarse por asalto los cielos e infiernos, recopila doce ensayos producidos por historiadores, historiadoras y en menor medida por sociólogos y científicos políticos que desde hace un buen tiempo han inscrito la perspectiva del tiempo en cada uno de sus análisis para evitar recaer en un presentismo ingenuo. Trece textos que en conjunto permiten parafrasear el epígrafe propuesto para escenificar una visita a la Cali del pasado, no tanto por amor y reverencia a ese pasado, tal cual el cuadro febril del melancólico anticuario que con cada vuelta de sol aumenta sus padecimientos, sino mejor desde el consabido gesto nietzscheano que celebra escapar de ese rebaño que no sabe qué significa el ayer ni el hoy por vivir atado al poste del momento. In this paper Fernando Arrabal's case will be used as an example of the difficulties that an author has to face when he leaves his own country and moves to another different from a spatial, cultural, and linguistic point of view. No full textNel decimo numero della rivista di Georgetown University dedicato al rapporto tra gli autori del Novecento e le più importanti città d'Italia, Paola Italia si occupa del rapporto tra Giorgio Bassani e Ferrara, città a cui l'autore dedica tutta la sua opera narrativa e che diventa un vero e proprio personaggio letterario. In particolare, grazie al lavoro compiuto durante la curatela del Meridiano dedicato a Giorgio Bassani, pubblicato nel 1998, Paola Italia mette in risalto il ruolo della città natale nel rapporto con il primo abbozzo del "Giardino dei Finzi Contini", intitolato "Primo appunto" e pubblicato sul "Caffè" sette anni prima della versione a stampa del celebre romanzo. Abbozzo in cui si chiarisce, nel diaframma dantesco, la sostanza simbolica della narrazione bassaniana e la sua rappresentazione di Ferrara.In the tenth issue of the journal of Georgetown University dedicated to the relationship between the authors of the twentieth century and the most important cities in Italy, Italian Paola deals with the relationship between Giorgio Bassani and Ferrara, a city to which the author devotes all her fiction and that becomes a real literary character. No full textIl Progetto M-Master nasce da una collaborazione fra il Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile dell'Università degli Studi Firenze e la Società Consortile E-Form. Il progetto è stato realizzato per alcuni master dell’Ateneo Fiorentino per promuovere una formazione di tipo “blended learning”. L’obiettivo è riuscire a rendere fruibili i master prevalentemente a distanza, integrando didattica, servizi di consulenza, fonti documentarie e bibliografiche e assistenza in presenza distribuita sul territorio nazionale. Nell’ambito del progetto M-Master si inserisce il master sul Rischio Idraulico proposto in risposta al crescente sviluppo di nuove metodologie e tecniche di indagine che richiedono di integrare l’attività di ricerca applicata con quella di formazione superiore favorendo l’accesso dei partecipanti ai laboratori e alle attrezzature scientifiche e utilizzando, per la divulgazione, le nuove opportunità offerte dalla tecnologia dell’informazione della formazione “e learning”. In tale contesto, basandosi sull’esperienza maturata nei 3 anni di attività, è stato dato avvio alla sperimentazione di una “biblioteca digitale aperta” sul rischio idraulico, strutturata come un ambiente virtuale a sostegno dell’apprendimento

Pre-reproductive parental enriching experiences influence progeny’s developmental trajectories
No full textWhile the positive effects of environmental enrichment (EE) applied after weaning, in adulthood, during aging, or even in the presence of brain damage have been widely described, the transgenerational effects of pre-reproductive EE have been less examined. And yet, this issue is remarkable given that parental environmental experience may imprint offspring's phenotype over generations through many epigenetic processes. Interactions between individual and environment take place lifelong even before conception. In fact, the environment pre-reproductively experienced by the mother and/or the father exerts a substantial impact on neural development and motor and cognitive performances of the offspring, even if not directly exposed to social, cognitive, physical and/or motor enrichment. Furthermore, pre-reproductive parental enrichment exerts a transgenerational impact on coping response to stress as well as on the social behavior of the offspring. Among the effects of pre-reproductive parental EE, a potentiation of the maternal care and a decrease in global methylation levels in the frontal cortex and hippocampus of the progeny have been described. Finally, pre-reproductive EE modifies different pathways of neuromodulation in the brain of the offspring (involving brain-derived neurotrophic factor, oxytocin and glucocorticoid receptors). The present review highlights the importance of pre-reproductive parental enrichment in altering the performances not only of animals directly experiencing it, but also of their progeny, thus opening the way to new hypotheses on the inheritance mechanisms of behavioral trait
