Relationships and Responsibilities of Software Experimentation.
The ESE research has dependence relationships with Ethical control, Good Laboratory Practices, and
related Guidelines. In other fields there are many types of experiments, to conduct
orderly (in case of success only!) E0 acts on things, “in-vitro”; experimenters are the
only humans allowed to come in contact; ESE scientists should simulate their
experiment processes before involving volunteers. E1 acts on primary animals; seems
not applicable for ESE experiments. E2 acts on formally informed human volunteers
performing as subjects. En>2 act on dependent humans: the lower is n the greater is the
level of dependency of the involved subjects. Based on the ESE practices, to the best
or our knowledge, ESE experiments usually skip the stages E0, and still limit to enact
(part of) E2, which is a quite frustrating fact that we should work to remove
Measure-driven processes and architecture for the empirical evaluation of software technology.
This paper reports on an on-going project undertaken within the University of Rome at Tor Vergata to automate the business processes of a class of administrative organizations. The experience gained and the lessons learned, while performing in the role of Innovation-driver, are abstracted and presented. In the context of this experience with process re-engineering, the paper compares the utility of empirically investigating software technology transfer with the reuse of technology measurement models possibly available. The paper also discusses the roles played by various environmental factors - technology, experimentation and measurements, an organization's business objectives, and other organizational issues, including the expected benefits and costs - in the empirical investigation of software technology transfer. Production and maintenance of goal-oriented software measurement models
Production and maintenance of measurement models are crucial in the context of an advanced software development organization. The paper suggests a goal-oriented measurement model life cycle that, starting out from the high-level organizational goals, drives software organizations towards a structured process to deal with measurement models. The life cycle results into an integrated component of the management activities pointed to generate, refine, and fulfill the organizational goals, whereas the final measurement models become items of a purpose fitting measurement plan. For each phase of the life cycle, the main activities, with their inputs and outputs, are identified and, moreover, some driving templates are defined. The paper analyzes their interactions with the other software production and management-related tasks and proposes a possible allocation within an Experience Factory-based software organization

Experiences, strategies and challenges in adapting PVM to VxWorksTM hard real-time operating system, for safety-critical software
The role performed by Open Source Software in safety-critical systems is growing and gaining importance. Due to many, and large variety of, hard real-time constraints and functional requirements that safety-critical applications have to meet, these applications are nowadays composed by logical and physical components, deployed on heterogeneous distributed platforms. This paper is part of a still ongoing project, and is concerned with exploring experimentally the porting of PVM to VxWorksTM: the latter has an internal architecture very different from the Unix standard OS(s) (like for example Linux or SolarisTM), which in turn is the reference OS platform for PVM. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005
Issues in applying empirical software engineering to software architecture
Empirical software engineering focuses on the evaluation of software engineering technologies, such as processes and tools, by comparing related sets of data. It has contributed a valuable body of knowledge in several areas such as Software Economics and Software Quality, which in turn drove important advances in related tools and techniques. Unfortunately this is not (yet) the case for software architecture, where empirical studies are still few. Such a condition demands for further empirical research efforts on the topic of software architecture and suggests specific areas of improvement. In this paper we discuss several essential, innovative, and maybe provocative, questions such as: Why do we have so few applications of empirical software engineering on software architecture?
