Per Moneta, invece, si trattava pur sempre di far rivivere il “suo” Risorgimento, quello di Mazzini e di Garibaldi, mentre l’Europa stava sprofondando nella tragedia della guerra mondiale con il sogno delle libere nazioni trasformato nell’incubo egoista dei nazionalismi esasperatiErnesto Teodoro Moneta, Garibaldino and patriot, a fighter of the wars of independence and journalist as editor for long years of the progressive newspaper of Milan Il Secolo, was the only Nobel prize for Italian peace. His international peace project, linked precisely to this Risorgimento formation, in the belief that the creation of free national communities led by representative institutions inevitably led to the harmonious and, precisely, peaceful coexistence between peoples. Moreover, the season in which he played his role as an indefatigable advocate of the pacifist movement seemed to confirm a similar goal: no conflict disturbed the relations between the countries of the Old Continent in the thirty years between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, while the fruit states were consolidating of the national aspirations of previous decades. Following, therefore, its activity, it is possible to reconstruct the complex and, at times, unexpected network of relationships between some of the greatest European intellectuals and politicians, from Pareto to De Amicis, from Cavallotti to Colajanni, among many others, who participated in this "battle for peace", until now very little known and which begins to surface in the unpublished papers analyzed by the author. For Moneta, however, it was still a matter of reviving "his" Risorgimento, that of Mazzini and Garibaldi, while Europe was sinking into the tragedy of the world war with the dream of free nations transformed into the selfish nightmare of exasperated nationalism

In April 1920, the forgotten Sanremo Conference tackled the thorny problem of the treaty with Turkey, so postponed by the 1919 Paris Conference after the First World War that it became a real issue. In the year and a half that elapsed between the two conferences, however, the Mediterranean was overwhelmed by the dramatic repercussions of the end of the Empire and the early dismemberment of its territory which contributed to determining new situations not initially foreseen by the peace plan: the traditional Greek Turkish clash, the difficult application of the system of mandates to the territories, the new nationalist instances of the Arabs, Armenians and Kurds represented centrifugal pressures that were often uncontrollable. With extreme difficulty, the Sanremo Conference tried to apply instead the word of the winners already decided by the secret agreements entered into during the conflict. The result, which necessarily had to deal with the de facto situations that had arisen in the meantime, was that set of solutions that a century later produced the current political and social upheavals in the eastern Mediterranean
Yesterday as today the theme of war questions European consciences which, in the face of great tragedies, rediscover the ambiguity and complexity of the relationship between war and peace. In the experience of European socialism, linked to strong internationalist roots but also immersed in the national cultures of the nineteenth century, this dense problematic knot takes on the dimension of tensions experienced as fratricidal and irreconcilable, of an identity clash between those who justify the facts and those who prove them fights the war, this happened with particular intensity in the years from 1911 to 1916, when the war event tended to occupy the European scene in an increasingly visible and devastating way.
This volume, based on extensive archival research and the press of the time, addresses an unprecedented comparison of two profoundly different thoughts, that of French socialism and that of Italian socialism, proposing an innovative interpretation of the complicated link between war and peace in the difficult conjuncture of the first world war.
What is contemporary history? In a present dominated by the effects of globalization processes, the answer to this question can only be the story of a world space capable of synchronously reconstructing the events of men and civilizations belonging to different ethnic groups, cultures and religions, located in various parts of the planet .
Many of the categories through which we read contemporary history, in fact, (nation state, nationalism, empire, class, class struggle, cold war) have gone into crisis and have undergone or are undergoing substantial changes such as the same idea of progress and development understood as unidirectional paths, as a succession of stages connected to each other by a linear narrative with the West and its civilization at the center, underlying historical becoming.
For this reason, this volume proposes an innovative interpretation of the global transformations of relations between different parts of the world through a reconsideration of the historical categories of space and time, proposing first of all the overcoming of periodization based on the canon of national and European history. The inaugural moment of the dynamics of the contemporary age are considered the world transformations imposed by the imperialism of the late nineteenth century, the founding moment of numerous processes that will characterize the twentieth century in the long term. Connected to this temporal choice is the geographic spatial one oriented to review the relationship between the periphery center as defined terministically, that is with a central and propulsive West and with the rest of the world "periphery" from time to time called to interact with the center. The long and troubled processes of the contemporary age, in fact, have shown how in the space-world the center-periphery relationship is mobile and ductile, such as, for example, various centers can also coexist or how quickly they can change the geometries of world balances.
But the approach used here is not just a geographic corrective. To change is the narrative itself which, by building new relationships, tries to overcome the most classic historical problematizations. Transnational and transversal themes (migration, capital and trade, expansion of empires, circulations of political ideals) support and help to overcome the setting of a history written exclusively from the point of view of national governments or focused on geographical communities. Ample space is therefore dedicated to international themes, to new global protagonists, to new wars, to social and geopolitical changes of the last decades whose roots and evolution in the near past are highlighted, restoring the right complexity to the contemporary world age
