Sightings and successful reproduction of allochthonous reptiles in Calabria
This paper reports information about the presence of three allochthonous reptiles species in Calabria: Testudo marginata, Trachemys scripta elegans and Chamaeleo chamaeleon. The first one was found in three sites located in the Catena Costiera Massif and in the Crati Valley (Northern Calabria). The slider turtle was found in seven different sites throughout all the region. It massively colonised the Angitola artificial lake: here, this turtle lives in natural conditions and its reproduction was confirmed by the presence of nests, eggs and hatchlings. C. chamaeleon is present in sandy coastal habitats near Palmi and Gioia Tauro (Southern Calabria). From a conservationistic point of view, serious damages to autochtonous species could be caused by the spreading of T. scripta elegans: this species has already determined the local extinction of Angitola’s Emys orbicularis populations

Cucumber mosaic virus infecting Thevetia nereifolia Juss. Ex Steud. and Nandina domestica Thumb.
In June 2004, virus-like symptoms were observed in the foliage of yellow oleander (Thevetia nereifolia Juss. ex. Steud.; family Apocynaceae) and common nandina (Nandina domestica Thunb.; family Nandinaceae) growing in the Botanical Garden of Bologna University (Italy). Yellow oleander showed distorsion, malformation and chlorotic mosaic on younger leaves, stunting and reduction in number of flowers; common nandina produced narrowed leaves. Symptomatic leaves from these two ornamental shrubs were collected and used for mechanical inoculations on herbaceous plants. The systemic symptoms induced on Nicotiana tabacum L. “Samsun”, N. bethamiana Gray and Capsicum annuum L. suggested a cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) infection. The presence of this virus was verified by the protein A-sandwhich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (PAS-ELISA) technique, using the polyclonal antisera PVAS-30 and PVAS-242a (American Type Culture Collection, Manassas, VA, USA). RT-PCR confirmed the presence of CMV in both the original yellow oleander and common nandina plants.By comparing these two CMV isolates with other 15 strains, it appeared that they were molecularly similar to each other, and closely related to isolates belonging to subgroup II of CMV strains. No virus infection has been reported in T. nereifolia and, from our results, it appears that this ornamental shrub can be considered a new natural host for CMV. As regarding N. domestica, this is the first finding of a natural virus infection of this specie in Italy

IL LITORALE DEL GOLFO DI S. EUFEMIA (CALABRIA): INDAGINI SULLE VARIAZIONI DELLA SPIAGGIA NELL'ULTIMO SECOLO
An investigation has been carried out on the shoreline changes during the last hundred years along the Thyrrhenian coast of Calabria, stretching for about 80 km, from the mouth of the Savuto River to Vaticano Cape. A remarkable difference was pointet out between the trend of shoreline changes during the period 1870-1954 and the more recent 1954-1985. The first period was marked by a general progression of the shoreline, while the second by a strong recession.
Close connections were identified between erosional phenomena which involved St. Eufemia Gulf and man's activities on territory
