Willingness To Pay for preserving local beaches: The role of framing, attitudes, and local identification

    No full text
This research concerns the impact of cognitive (i.e., framing issues) and psychosocial (i.e., environmental attitudes and place identity) dimensions on people’s Willingness To Pay (WTP) for preservation and improvement of a ‘local’ environmental public good, i.e., local beaches. After a pilot study, a field experiment (N = 102) was carried out in order to verify the effects on WTP of: (1) the reminder about the involvement of other people for preserving ‘local’ beaches; (2) attitudes towards the environmental good; and (3) local identity. Results confirmed the reminder effect, so that individuals reminded of other contributors are willing to pay less than individuals who were not reminded. Positive attitudes towards local beaches are associated to higher WTP for preserving them, but this emerged only in those residents showing a higher local identification

The Importance of European and Mediterranean Landscapes in Environmental Preference and Identity. Many scholars stress the fundamental role of the perceptive dimension of the landscape. This study is a part of a wider research project, targeting the relationship among prototypical landscapes, preferences and identitarian meaning. Literature on Environmental Psychology suggests that landscapes can play an important role in the development of personal Identity. Place-identity, in turn, is a dimension of the Self definition of the individual’s personal identity related to the physical environment. Thus we selected prototypical European (vs. Not-European) and Mediterranean (vs. Not-Mediterranean) landscapes in order to detect differences in implicit preference and identification towards them. Participants (N=30 residents of the Italian Region of Sardinia) were submitted to the Implicit Association Test, which is an experimental technique measuring the strength of association between two concepts (in this case represented respectively by pictures and words). Results showed a higher level of preference for and identification with the Mediterranean (vs. Not Mediterranean) landscapes, and a higher degree of preference for European (vs. Not European) landscapes

Several studies founded a positive relationship between environmental work stresses, perceived safety of work places and number of injuries. This study tested the relationship between cognitive dimensions of environmental quality, dimensions of affective quality, and perceived safety in the context of hospital units. A total of 204 hospital workers filled in a questionnaire measuring Perceived Hospital Environment Quality Indicators (PHEQIs: Fornara et al., 2006), Affective Qualities of Places (Perugini et al., 2002), and the Work Safety (WSS: Hayes et al., 1998). Results show a positive relationship between subjective indicators (both cognitive and affective) of environmental quality and specific dimensions of perceived safety in hospital units
