International data exchange and a trustworthy host: Focal areas for international collaboration in research and education
A key message is the acknowledgement that international cooperation is nascent and a more global approach is urgently needed because there is ultimately just one, single global information environment, consisting of the interdependent networks of information technology infrastructures, including the Internet, telecommunications networks, computer systems, and embedded processors and controllers. This material is based on work supported by the U.S. Office of Naval Research, Grant No. N00014-09-1-0597. Student Aid, Religious Education, and the First Amendment
This week, the Supreme Court heard oral argument in Carson v. Makin, which centers around the free exercise clause, and public funding for religious education. The issue is whether a state—in this case, Maine, violates the First Amendment by prohibiting students participating in an otherwise generally available student-aid program from choosing to use their aid to attend schools that provide religious, or “sectarian,” instruction. In Maine, not all school districts have their own public secondary schools. For students in those districts, the state will pay for them to attend private high schools— unless the private school has a religious affiliation. The petitioners in this case are parents who are seeking that state funding for their son to attend a religious private school. Host Jeffrey Rosen is joined by Erwin Chemerinsky, Dean of the UC Berkeley School of Law and co-author of The Religion Clauses: The Case for Separating Church and State, and Michael McConnell, Richard and Frances Mallery Professor of Law at Stanford, and Director of the Constitutional Law Center at Stanford Law School. They discuss the history of religious schooling and public funding in America under the Constitution, including from the founding onward; what historical precedent means for how to understand and interpret the religious freedom clauses of the First Amendment; and how the Court might rule in the case.</p
Furthering an Innovative Approach to Caring for the Frail Elderly
internship report - winter 2016People over the age of 65 (seniors) are the fastest growing demographic in Canada representing approximately 15% of the total national population in 2013 and expecting to grow to 24% by 2036 (Statistics Canada). The cost of caring for this seniors’ population is disproportionately high at 45% of the healthcare spending. A significant driver of this cost is frailty, the progressive physiological decline in function, cognition, and mobility accompanied by a loss of physiological reserve and increased vulnerability to disease and death (Moorhouse, 2012).
The Palliative and Therapeutic Harmonization (PATH) model is an innovative approach to simplifying the process of caring for the frail elderly that is shown to produce a dramatic change in the cost of care and the quality of patient and family caregiver satisfaction with the healthcare system (Moorhouse, Mallery, 2012). The PATH model of care was developed by Drs. Mallery and Moorhouse who practice geriatric medicine at the QEII Hospital in Halifax, NS.
Deloitte has been working with PATH Inc. for over two years to support the adoption of the PATH model of care across Canada and beyond. As part of this adoption effort, Deloitte was engaged by the Tideview Terrace Long-term Care facility in Digby, NS to perform a PATH Implementation readiness assessment and to identify and recommend any preparatory actions that Tideview Terrace would need to undertake prior to implementing the PATH care model.
The author, along with a team of healthcare consulting professionals, planned and performed the readiness assessment and identified and presented 56 recommendations to the Tideview Terrace leadership. Through this process there were additional objectives that were addressed including the documentation of the approach, processes and tools used to complete the readiness assessment to enable repeatability of the process, as well as a detailed analysis of an identified implementation issue that has far reaching impacts beyond the current client environment.
This report details the author’s work on the readiness assessment and resulting findings as well as the activities and analysis performed to support the secondary objectives of the project.Deloitte Inc., Halifa
Evangelicae historiae imagines : ex ordine euangeliorum, quae toto anno in missae sacrificio recitantur, in ordinem temporis vitae Christi digestae /
Brunet writes that the roman numeral was added for the publication of Adnotationes et meditationes, which would imply that the impressions in the present copy are not early. According to Wadell (p. 18), however, they are printed from the plates in early condition, with Bernardino Passeri's name on all but ten.In a box with line border above the image, each engraving bears the day in the church calendar with which is is associated, a Bible citation, and the year of Christ's life to which it pertains. At the right end of the box is an arabic numeral, giving the sequence of the image in Christ's life, by which the prints in the present work are ordered. Below the arabic numeral is a roman number, giving the sequence of the print's subject in the Gospel readings through the church year, by which the engravings are arranged in Nadal's Adnotationes et meditationes. The images bear letters keyed to explanations in a box beneath. The t.p. and plates are after drawings by Bernardino Passeri and Martin de Vos. They were engraved by Jeronimus, Antonie and Jan Wierx, Adriaen and Jan Collaert, and Karel van Mallery. Engraved head-piece, p. [3], and tail-piece, p. [8]. Three large foliated woodcut initials and one small.Engraved title leaf. Second leaf is dedication to Clement VIII by Jacobus Ximenez, Secretary of the Society of Jesus. Reader's preface, p. [5]. Index, p. [6]-[8]. On p. [9]-[10] is the papal privilege granted to Martin Nutius for the intended publication of Gerónimo Nadal's Adnotationes et meditationes, which appeared in 1595 with the present plates as illustrations, as well as for the 153 plates published separately. The privilege is signed by Vestrius Barbianus and dated Aug. 14, 1593. Plates of the present work very probably printed by Martin Nutius; see Wadell, p. 18.For publication history including impetus provided by Jesuits in Rome and correspondence with Christopher Plantin, see Wadell, p. 9-17.Wadell, M.B. Security Optimization for Distributed Applications Oriented on Very Large Data Sets
The paper presents the main characteristics of applications which are working with very large data sets and the issues related to security. First section addresses the optimization process and how it is approached when dealing with security. The second section describes the concept of very large datasets management while in the third section the risks related are identified and classified. Finally, a security optimization schema is presented with a cost-efficiency analysis upon its feasibility. Conclusions are drawn and future approaches are identified.Security, Optimization, Very Large Data Sets, Distributed Applications
