    Photograph of the historic tree at Mission Carmel (San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo) in Monterey, ca.1888. The tree stands at center, growing from the slope of a hill that feeds into the dry ravine at left. In the background left, the gaurd rail of a bridge can be seen.; "Viscaino hung bell on this tree and held mass in 1602 and Father Juniper Serra utilized it for the same purpose June 3, 1770 when he first landed to establish a mission for Saint Charles. [Also the boat was tied here.] The tree fell early in 1900 and the trunk was removed to the garden at rear of San Carlos Mission in Monterey. Photo made by a Mr. Adams [a photographer of Monterey about 1890] abt. 1880 and [negative] purchased from him about 1895 by C.C. Pierce". -- Unknown author

    Photograph of seven people at work around a table, near cameras, or an easel at the Pierce and Blanchard Plaza Photo Gallery, 515 North Main Street, Los Angeles, ca.1890. Pictured are (left to right): photographers Eddie McConnell (behind large camera), James A. Blanchard, a Mexican man who went to Manila and started a photography business, L.M. Clendenen (at easel), Blanchard, Miss Blanchard and Gould (at small camera). Behind the group a large sign reading "Plaza Gallery" leans against a wall on which hangs five photographs.; The Plaza Gallery was located about 100 feet opposite the Los Angeles Plaza in an adobe building south of the Los Angeles Mission known as the Andres Pico residence but not owned by him. This location was first started by Shoemaker (?) and afterwards run by A.C. Golsh, then by Bertrand & Stine, and then by Pierce & Blanchard. Pierce dissolved the Gallery and with A.E. McConnell moved to the north part of the same building and conducted a view and commercial business known as Tourist View Depot -- Pierce & McConnell

    Photograph of General Custer and his officers posed possibly at a fort, ca.1888. A group of soldiers and women gather around the staircase leading up to a front porch. The men are clad in uniform and are loosely scattered, some sitting, others standing and facing the right. The women are in long dresses or skirts, and stand amidst the men. In the background, a fenced porch can be seen, with a large windowed door in the middle between two large windows. Note: it's a copy of the original photograph (made by C.C. Pierce in circa 1888)
