    No full text
Thirsty (Pyaasa, 1957), Paper Flowers (Kaagaz Ke Phool, 1959) and The Master, the Mistress and the Slave (Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, 1962) are the three most famous, well-known and analyzed films by Guru Dutt. This thesis aims to broaden the field of possibilities by summoning its filmic totality. Legendary, mythical, personal, sincere, self-destructive, desire for life and or death... these are the qualifiers found in cinematographic literature to designate Guru Dutt and his work. The interest in India and its cinema stems from an observation : there are few Indian films distributed in France, whereas India is the leading film-producing country in the world. Who is Guru Dutt ? What is his contribution to cinema ? How did he take melodrama to an epic dimension ? Why today do the young filmmakers who, following Satyajit Ray, are now beginning to shake up the system, refer to him as a precursor, a master ? This thesis intends to highlight the cinephilico-filmic contributions of this author to understand Indian cinema through the prism of his work through a socio-historical and phenomenological approach allowing us to retrace the itinerary of the greatest popular, musical filmmaker that the India has ever brought up. So that the work of Guru Dutt, which has successfully passed the test of time, now only has to pass the test of space

Picture versus words: A comparison of pictorial and verbal informed assent formats

    No full text
Background for the Study: Informed consent is a process of obtaining permission from the participant to participate in research. Involving children in a research requires them to give their “assent” for participation. Informed assent is obtained from children even after their guardians have given consent for participation. Studies have shown that children have difficulty understanding the key elements of research process such as right to withdraw from the study or the meaning of “harm” involved in the research process. Further, the studies have also propounded that using child-friendly methods such as using pictures and simple language would facilitate children's understanding. Objectives: In this study, pictorial and verbal assent formats were compared find out which format is suitable for children's understanding of informed assent with respect to research. Methods: A sample of 389 school going children and adolescents of both the gender, ranging from 7 to 16 years were considered for the study. The sample was randomly divided into two groups, where for one group (n = 197), pictorial assent format was administered and another group (n = 192), verbal assent format was administered. The pictorial assent format was developed for the study by the corresponding author. Results and Conclusions: Analysis revealed that there was a significant level of interaction between gender and the two assent formats. Males were able to understand pictorial assent format better compared to the females, whereas females were able to understand verbal assent format better than the males, when age and education were considered as covariates. Further, it was found that as age increases there is better understanding of research processes in both the formats. Hence, while the process of obtaining assent for participation in research, age of child must be considered and with respect to gender differences males tend to prefer pictorial formats whereas females tend to prefer verbal formats

Deforestation in the Tropics: Reconciling Disparities in Estimates for India

    No full text
Here we examine recent disparate estimates of deforestation obtained for India. We discuss the sources of disparity and the implications of inaccurate estimates and suggest ways in which future attempts at estimating deforestation might reconcile the disparity. Despite the importance of deforestation and its consequences, no attempt has been made to reconcile the different estimates obtained for India

Income distribution, growth and financialization: the Italian case.

    No full text
The paper investigates whether the current decline of the Italian economy could be traced back to financialization. In principle financialization could not be so important for an economy in which many firms are not quoted in the stock exchange and for which shareholders' interests should not matter. The author argues that financialization may have deep effects in such an environment by changing the perceived financial norm and the target return on capital. The author draws on a model by Lavoie (1995) extending it to an open economy. She uses this model by looking at the effects of an appreciation, thus replicating the appreciation of the euro in the last years and its possible effects on the Italian economy. The results of such an appreciation would be a fall in the rate of growth, accumulation and in the realized rate of profit. This picture, however, does not fit in well with some stylized facts. In Italy, the rate of growth and the capital accumulation have slowed down while the rate of profit and the profit share have clearly increased. The increase concerns the average profit share and the average profit rate while indeed the profit rate is declining in the manufacturing sectors, but rising in the services sector. At this point a different interpretation is presented, which is no more based on the financialization hypothesis but rather on the increase in the degree of monopoly power in the Italian industrial sectors, given the increase in the mark-up. This process would have been favoured by the privatization process of previously public enterprises. The author shows what might have happened by using a model by Dutt (1995) with two sectors. In this model in the long-run the accumulation of capital is still governed by aggregated utilization and profitability, but the allocation of capital among sectors and their growth depends on the profit rate differential. The profit rate differential might have shifted resources to the service sectors, which would have been favoured by the privatization process. In this case, financialization would be a consequence of the increase in monopolistic competition, which in turn could be responsible for the decline.

A bio-impedance System for Fluid Monitoring in Dengue Disease

Dengue disease is a mosquito borne viral fever widespread in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The incidence of the disease has rapidly grown over the last decade. There is no specific course of medication to treat dengue. But determining the intensity of fluid leakage is essential in managing the progression of the disease. Bioimpedance technology is an inviting tool for safe, inexpensive and non-invasive monitoring of body fluids. However existing systems are not attractive for continuous and long term assessments. In addition the system performance is also susceptible to variations in posture and motion related artifacts. This work presents a motion aware bioimpedance measurement system (AMBICA) for fluid monitoring using AD5940 and accelerometers to overcome the mentioned limitations. The primary aim of this thesis is to characterize the performance of the developed device with a commercial device(BIACorpus). Additionally a framework to detect the variation in posture and motion is presented.Bioimpedance and movement data was collected from 14 healthy volunteers. The impedance values measured by the device showed high correlation (r>0.98) while the reactance values showed weak correlation (0.10 < r < 0.67). The bias and limits of agreement estimated for impedance measurements are -4.50_13.01 and [21.0,-30.0] respectively. The estimated bias and limits of agreement for reactance measurements are 14.84_19.64, the limits of agreement are [53.36,-23.68]. The precision scores indicated a higher variability in measurements for BIACorpus device compared to AMBICA. The proposed framework was able to identify the active and inactive periods and gross postures like supine, sitting and standing with an accuracy of >95% and 94.6% respectively. The results in this study showed that the impedance and reactance values followed a typical trend agreeable with bioimpedance measurements. However, the values measured by AMBICA agree more closely with BIACorpus for impedance measurements than for reactance measurements. Inconsistencies are observed for both devices and they are attributed to parasitics and imbalance of interface impedances at the inputs of the AD5940. Due to the difference in technologies used, the values from the devices do not measure the exact same values. Therefore values above or below the reference values may still have clinical significance. AMBICA can be used in the future for fluid assessments in dengue affected subjects. Furthermore motion related information gathered using the framework proposed can be further incorporated to develop contextual bioimpedance monitoring applications.Biomedical Engineerin
