Spread-ing Uncertainty, Shrinking Birth Rates: A Natural Experiment for Italy

    No full text
Many previous studies have documented the procyclicality of fertility to business cycles or labour market indicators in Western countries. However, part of the recent fertility decline witnessed since the Great Recession has been left unexplained by traditional measures. The present study advances the notion that birth postponement might have accelerated in response to rising uncertainty, which fuelled negative expectations and declining levels of confidence about the future. To provide empirical support for the causal effect of perceived uncertainty on birth rates, we focus on Italy’s sovereign debt crisis of 2011–2012 as a natural experiment. Perceived uncertainty is measured using Google trends for the term ‘spread’—which acted as somewhat of a barometer for the crisis both in the media and everyday conversations—to capture the general public’s degree of concern about the stability of Italian public finances. A regression discontinuity in time identifies the effect of perceived uncertainty on birth rates in Italy as a drop between 1.5% and 5%, depending on model specification

    No full text
The Haitian novelist and poet Louis-Philippe Dalembert (Port-au-Prince, 1962) has developed in his works of fiction the concept of vagabondage as a literary projection of his biographical wandering through multiple spaces. The aim of this essay is to study the presence of vagabondage and its distinctive features in those novels written by Dalembert that reflect the writer’s perpetual motion: Le Crayon du bon Dieu n’a pas de gomme (1996), L’Autre face de la mer (1998), L’Île du bout des rêves (2003), Les dieux voyagent la nuit (2006). The main characters are constantly moving, they are cosmopolitan wanderers who belong to many places at the same time, just like Dalembert himself. By analyzing the representation of movement in these fictions, we will show that the notion of vagabondage is depicted by the author as a positive and meaningful opportunity for the vagabond who travels across countries, languages and cultures

BIRD ASSEMBLAGES IN A STRUCTURALLY SIMPLIFIED MEDITERRANEAN SANDY BEACH: AN ANALYSIS AT SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL LEVEL

Studies on the bird richness and abundance patterning in sandy coastal areas are almost neglected. A better knowledge of bird assemblage structure could permit the developing of appropriate conservation strategies in these key ecosystems. In this study, we aimed to test the hypothesis that a patchy and structurally oversimplified ecosystem, as a Mediterranean sandy beach, may host bird assemblages highly variable in space and time and relatively poor in richness and abundance, whose structure should be therefore affected by chance. In 2007 a transect laid along a sandy beach was carried out, allowing to analyse the data temporally (six 2-month periods) and spatially (three longitudinal habitat types), either at single species or assemblage level. We observed a total of 25 bird species. Bird assemblages showed a taxonomical, phenological and ecological heterogeneity. In late autumn-winter the beach hosted the richest assemblage, in summer-autumn the lowest. Differences in mean values among 2-month periods were significant for species richness. Beaches represent patchy ecosystems with a different availability of resources in space and time. The presence of vegetation and linked trophic resources presumably permits the occurrence of a large variation in resource availability that determines a high turnover for different species along the temporal and spatial niche. Finally, we observed an inverse relationship between human presence and species richness. Battisti Corrado, Luiselli Luca, Vignoli Leonardo. Things change: Women’s and men’s marital disruption dynamics in Italy during a time of social transformations, 1970-2003

We study women’s and men’s marital disruption in Italy between 1970 and 2003. By applying an event-history analysis to the 2003 Italian variant of the Generations and Gender Survey we found that the spread of marital disruption started among middle-highly educated women. Then in recent years it appears that less educated women have also been able to dissolve their unhappy unions. Overall we can see the beginning of a reversed educational gradient from positive to negative. In contrast the trend in men’s marital disruption risk appears as a change over time common to all educational groups, although with persisting educational differentials.determinants, educational differences, event history analysis, gender difference, Italy, marital disruption

    No full text
Moins l’infini, the first novel written by the Haitian writer and poet Anthony Phelps, has recently been republished, with some quite remarkable changes between the two editions. With a different title, a new dedication and some lexical and morphosyntactic variations, this reissue may be interpreted as a rewriting of the novel which was first published in 1972. This rewriting made by the author may be conscious or not but it results in a more universal atmosphere, less linked to a strictly Haitian milieu. These variations are probably due to the historical and cultural gap between the two editions: forty years have passed and this love story which takes place under François Duvalier’s dictatorship has a different meaning now. The time has come to mourn the death of Duvalier’s opponents, the heroes never rewarded by justice that are mentioned in the new version of the title, Des fleurs pour les héros
