A formula for the Mahler measure of axy+bx+cy+d

    No full text
AbstractWe introduce a formula for the Mahler measure of axy+bx+cy+d with complex coefficients a,b,c, and d and give examples which demonstrate a connection with L-functions. We then prove a generalization of Maillot's formula when the coefficients are real. Next, we discuss operations on the coefficients which fix the Mahler measure. Finally, we prove an alternate formulation of the main result in order to calculate the Mahler measure of a two-parameter family of polynomials in three variables

    ADOP2T videos

    No full text
A series of short videos created to showcase ADOP2T projects conducted by the Illinois Waste Management and Research Center (now known as the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center). The videos consist of an introduction to WMRC and the ADOP2T approach, two case studies of projects done with plating companies, an explanation of the barrel plating process, and an overview of a project funded by WMRC's sponsored research program to study how barrel design impacts drag-out rate

The Mahler measure of parametrizable polynomials

    No full text
AbstractOur aim is to explain instances in which the value of the logarithmic Mahler measure m(P) of a polynomial P∈Z[x,y] can be written in an unexpectedly neat manner. To this end we examine polynomials defining rational curves, which allows their zero-locus to be parametrized via x=f(t), y=g(t) for f,g∈C(t). As an illustration of this phenomenon, we prove the equalityπm(y2+y(x+1)+x2+x+1)=2D(i)−34D(ω), where ω=e2πi/3 and D(z) is the Bloch–Wigner dilogarithm. As we shall see, formulas of this sort are a consequence of the Galois descent property for Bloch groups. This principle enables one to explain why the arguments of the dilogarithm function depend only on the points where the rational curve defined by P intersects the torus |x|=|y|=1. In the process we also present a general method for computing the Mahler measure of any such polynomial

This short piece is taken from a review of the three important books considered below. This review is part of my current exploration of the historiography of slavery and the Constitution in Civil War legal history. Brian McGinty, Lincoln and the Court; Stephen C. Promoting Play-Based Learning at Home

    No full text
This literature review discusses how teachers can help parents implement play-based-learning in their own home. The review first looks at what play-based-learning is, why it is developmentally appropriate in the early years, and how it has evolved and been used throughout the years. The review will discuss legislation that has made it difficult to practice play-based-learning in the classroom and how promoting parental involvement is one way that we can combat this. Home-visits, take-home-kits, and technology are then reviewed as viable ways to introduce parents to play-based-learning and help them implement it in their own homes
