No full textAlong with other fragments now scattered in different museums worldwide, these three fragments belonged to the floor of a Roman villa in the ancient city of zeugma (today’s Belkis, Turkey). The mosaic consisted of a central panel featuring Poseidon while leading a chariot on a sea inhabited by marine creatures, and of a sumptuous outer frame, showing a strip of plant volutes with cupid hunters and another strip with pairs of sinusoids (an interlaced pattern design) with circles enclosing female busts, the personifications of the Roman provinces

No full textThe group of “Palmyrene tokens” consists of 34 objects of carefully polished terracotta, many of them showing traces of red engobe. The different coloration of the material depends on the minerals contained in the clay. These objects were mass manufactured, by using two-valve moulds, and in most cases decorated by hand on both sides (only one object features one entirely smooth side). Tokens vary in shape, size, iconography, text; in fact, different shapes support various images, although some tend to be recurrent.
