Knowledge-based strategies: case-study analysis of local computer services companies
The studies of models for formulating business strategies that explicitly consider knowledge as the core resource are still insufficient. This paper analyses this issue by considering the particular case of computer service firms, which can be seen as Knowledge Intensive Business Services (KIBS) connecting the sources of technological innovation (i.e. large multinationals, research laboratories, universities, etc.) to the individual needs of the local customers. In particular, they operate as mediators between the local cognitive requirements and the more generic knowledge resources available in the global environment. Since the activity of those companies is based on the capability to manage knowledge flows among various actors, the formulation of their business strategies requires new approaches that directly focus on cognitive processes. The paper describes the results of an extensive survey involving the computer service companies located in a specific region (Northeast of Italy). The study allows to draw useful schemes for the identification of knowledge-based strategies, which can be of use beyond the specific context of investigation. In particular, the paper: a) analyses approaches that can be used to establish a knowledge-based business strategy; b) uses such approaches to identify how computer service firms pursue their business strategy by means of a proper management of their knowledge assets; c) discusses the utility of the illustrated approaches, and provides some suggestions for a future research agend
Sharing Knowledge in Public Service Networks: a Case Study of Employment Services
Public services require efficiency and quick responsiveness. An effective management of knowledge and knowledge exchanges is vital. This paper addresses this issue by analysing the case of employment services, which have been subjected to profound reforms in the last years with the aim of providing services that fit the needs of local companies and workers. This is why today labour markets are often managed at local or regional levels, and are populated by wide networks of public and private intermediaries that try to match companies and workers locally. However, these networks require effective management of knowledge exchanges between players, efficient coordination mechanisms, and appropriate use of IT. The paper analyses the processes of knowledge exchange and sharing that characterises a significant case of networked public employment services: the Province of Vicenza, located in Northeastern Italy. The study is based on direct interviews with main actors, on the analysis of support systems and services (e.g. databases, portals), and of available documents. The players in the employment system are identified, and their structure, functions, resources and management approaches are examined. Particularly, the processes of interaction and knowledge sharing between players are analysed, and the web of knowledge exchanges mapped. The related issues of coordination and knowledge management are also investigated. The findings can help public policy makers and private company managers to set appropriate policies for employment services
TCP behavior over a greened network
Recent works analyze the energy saving improvements of greened networks. The main idea is to define algorithms able to put some network links or devices into sleep mode for saving the used energy. This can achieved by adopting power-aware traffic engineering to route traffic towards a subset of links or to consider topology-based and traffic-based pruning mechanisms. These approaches are very promising as for the energy saving and the overall network performance remain satisfactory, however the question is: are the per-flow traffic performance still guaranteed? How does TCP perform in such a greened network? In this paper we analyze the performance of different versions of TCP in a network where energy savings are achieved by the use of one of the algorithm, namely ESTOP, defined to prune the IP network on the basis of network topological characteristics. The performance results show that the behavior of that TCP versions depending on the round trip time, namely Reno and Cubic, are affected by the link pruning in an expected way. This may allow to use these pruning techniques with a suitable control on the per-flow performance. The tradeoff between energy saving and TCP through-put loss is analyzed. © 2012 IFIP
The Pervasive Identity of Knowledge Management: Consolidation or Dilution?
It is a widespread opinion that knowledge management (KM) is a strongly interdisciplinary field of study. Over the years, this characteristic has become more marked, and it is now possible to identify more than one hundred different definitions of the term coming from distinct subject areas, e.g., business management, accounting, education, human resources, information, computer science, healthcare, and library science. The number of papers related to KM has grown notably, and they now amount to tens of thousands. Looking at the literature, KM appears to be a pervasive concept that can be applied to any human activity, and conversely, any dimension related to human activity affects the adoption of KM. Although multidiscipinarity is not necessrily a negative characteristic, there is a risk that the concept itself of KM becomes misunderstood or used in a generic way and may lose its original significance. In other words, the proliferation of works that refer to KM is a positive signal but also raises the question of whether the discipline is consolidating or diluting its identity. The paper stimulates a discussion on this by going a little deeper into the abovementioned pervasiveness. An analysis of various reviews of the literature on KM is done to verify if KM is conceptualized and applied in a common way or if it is splitting into different but increasingly inconsistent streams

Knowledge management practices in supply chains: A literature survey
Nowadays, competition is more among supply chains (SCs) than between individual firms. So, knowledge is a critical resource that has to be managed properly not only in single companies but also across SCs. Managing knowledge within a SC can help companies to promote better use of resources and achieve better value for customers. From a knowledge management (KM) perspective, this implies a shift of focus, from traditional intra-organizational KM practices to inter-organizational KM. However, on this issue, the current KM literature is very varied, and studies have taken completely different directions. There is a lack even of basic definitions and classifications, as is the case of the notion of KM practice and its application to the case of SCs. The existing literature surveys (for example, Bhosale and Kant, 2016, Pérez-Salazar et al., 2019, Cerchione and Esposito, 2016) provide fragmented views, and a unified vision or perspective on this topic has not emerged so far. This study proposes a systematic approach to the KM literature on supply chains. A systematic literature review was performed, and a descriptive analysis of the selected papers was presented to show the most importantly covered or uncovered topics in KM-SC aspect. More than 800 papers indexed in international citational databases (i.e. Scopus and WoS) published in the last 20 years were selected and analyzed, and their content classified. Some of the points that emerged are particularly important: A) the definitions and classifications of KM practices that are or can be adopted in SCs, which proves to be a problematic issue in the literature; b) the main processes that are detected for KM in SCs, and those that, although important in principle, are still understudied; and c) the importance and trend of researches in the inter-organizational KM practices in SCs
Trust in knowledge exchanges between service providers and clients: a multiple case-study of KIBS
For some sectors the management of client-provider knowledge exchanges is the core element of the business. This is especially the case of knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) whose delivery entails intensive supplier-client cognitive interactions: KIBS firms supply clients with precious elements of technical and applicative knowledge, while the latter give KIBS companies the knowledge items needed for designing a successful solution. Although trust has proved to be an essential ingredient of knowledge exchanges, the empirical studies about its actual role are still scarce, especially as regards KIBS. The paper contributes to fill this gap by discussing the results of a multiple case-study of computer services. Particularly, it a) offers a knowledge-oriented description of client-provider interactions; b) investigates the main mechanisms that govern such interactions; c) analyses the role played by trust as antecedent and consequence of the interaction; d) discusses the issue of development of trustworthy interactions between KIBS and clients
Communities of Practice and their central role in KM
CoPs are often considered an essential organisational tool to facilitate knowledge sharing and learning improvement of organisations and single individuals. In the KM literature, and also in the practice, CoPs have, however, been treated in different ways, by using different notions, and by adopting various research approaches. The paper proposes a survey of the literature, by examining the papers in leading KM journals. The main aims of the study are: a) to trace the origins and evolution of the notion, and how it is defined and used, both in practical and theoretical terms; b) to highlight the role played by CoPs in the KM literature; c) to classify the approaches used by KM research on CoPs; d) to discuss the critical points that the use of CoPs raise both in research and practice, and highlight the potential prospects in a future KM research agend
Il fondamento del divorzio
