Free convection flow of water at 4° C past an infinite porous plate with constant suction and free stream velocity

    No full text
An analysis of the two-dimensional flow of water at 4° C past an infinite porous plate is presented under the following conditions : (i) The suction velocity normal to the plate is constant, (ii) the free stream velocity is constant, (iii) the plate temperature is constant, (iv) the difference between the tempera¬ ture of the plate and the free stream is such that to have free convection currents. Approximate solutions for the coupled non linear equations are obtained for the velocity and temperature field and for the rate of heat transfer. The effects of G (Grashof number) on the velocity and the rate of heat transfer are discussed.Raptis A. A., Perdikis C. P. Special and Differential Treatment: A Mechanism to Promote Development?

    No full text
Much has been made of "special and differential" treatment in the Doha Development Round of WTO negotiations. In particular, a conscious effort has been made to infer that special and differential treatment will promote development. While special and differential treatment may be a necessary evil given developing countries' higher adjustment costs, dignifying it as a development mechanism plays into the hands of protectionist interests. In particular, by allowing a general increase in the ability of developing countries to isolate their economies, it may reduce the efficacy of important forces that prod institutional reforms in developing countries. As institutional reform is one of the keys to economic development, lionizing special and differential treatment in the WTO is likely to be counterproductive.development, institutional reform, protectionism, special and differential treatment, WTO, International Development,

The Cybathlon BCI race: Successful longitudinal mutual learning with two tetraplegic users.

    No full text
This work aims at corroborating the importance and efficacy of mutual learning in motor imagery (MI) brain-computer interface (BCI) by leveraging the insights obtained through our participation in the BCI race of the Cybathlon event. We hypothesized that, contrary to the popular trend of focusing mostly on the machine learning aspects of MI BCI training, a comprehensive mutual learning methodology that reinstates the three learning pillars (at the machine, subject, and application level) as equally significant could lead to a BCI-user symbiotic system able to succeed in real-world scenarios such as the Cybathlon event. Two severely impaired participants with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI), were trained following our mutual learning approach to control their avatar in a virtual BCI race game. The competition outcomes substantiate the effectiveness of this type of training. Most importantly, the present study is one among very few to provide multifaceted evidence on the efficacy of subject learning during BCI training. Learning correlates could be derived at all levels of the interface-application, BCI output, and electroencephalography (EEG) neuroimaging-with two end-users, sufficiently longitudinal evaluation, and, importantly, under real-world and even adverse conditions

Investigating the extent to which inverse reinforcement learning can learn Rrewards from noisy demonstrations

    No full text
Inverse Reinforcement Learning (IRL) aims to recover a reward function from expert demonstrations in a Markov Decision Process (MDP). The objective is to understand the underlying intentions and behaviors of experts and derive a reward function based on their reasoning, rather than their exact actions. However, expert demonstrations can be influenced by various types of noise (e.g., from random behavior) which can affect their accuracy and effectiveness in solving the MDP. This research investigates the capability of IRL to recover reward functions from noisy demonstrations. Three types of noises, namely Random Action Noise, Random Bias Noise, and Sparse Noise, are introduced and modeled. Demonstrations are generated with these noises, and the corresponding reward functions are recovered. Comparisons are made between the noisy and optimal recovered rewards using various metrics. The results indicate that IRL exhibits certain tolerance level against Random Events and Sparse Noise, while being more vulnerable to Random Bias Noise.CSE3000 Research ProjectComputer Science and Engineerin

Unsteady flow through a highly porous medium in the presence of radiation

    No full text
The unsteady natural convection flow of a viscous and incompressible fluid through a porous medium with high porosity bounded by a vertical infinite stationary plate in the presence of radiation has been investigated. The fluid is assumed to be a gray, emitting and absorbing radiation, but non-scattering medium. The effects of the radiation parameter, Grashof number and permeability parameter of the medium on the velocity field as well as the effects of the radiation parameter and Prandtl number on the temperature field have been included in the analysis.Transport in Porous Medi
