This paper intends to deal with the issue of territorial transformations that have taken place in the last two decades in Sicily, after the construction of hundreds of small, medium and large photovoltaic plants. These plants were built often causing profound landscape changes
L'ombra lunga di Zarlino
"The long shadow of Zarlino" · The first part is devoted to high¬lighting the special relevance modes have in Zarlino’s writings, where they are considered as “the forms of the compositions”. Zarlino reconsid¬ers, revises, and reorganizes modes from book to book. A crucial point is in the Dimostrationi Harmoniche (1571), with the proposal of a new modal order that no longer begins with D but rather with C. Zarlino wants to convince his readers that this new order is more rational and coherent than the previous one, since all the species of the perfect intervals (diapa¬son, diapente, diatessaron) now start from the same note, C. Moreover, the sequence of the finales finally coincides with the exhacord. To support the new modal order Zarlino places Willaert among the interlocutors of the Dimostrationi and makes him say that the new order is useful and necessary.
The second part outlines how Zarlino relates to his fellow disciples Vi¬centino and Cipriano (they had all been pupils of Willaert) and Glarean. Vicentino is addressed very polemically in the Institutioni Harmoniche, where he is mentioned not by his own name but as “Chromatist”. His attitude towards Cipriano is a little ambiguous : Zarlino quotes him just twice in the Institutioni and once in the Dimostrationi, that is not much for such an important master. As far as Glarean is concerned, Zarlino was indebted to his Dodekachordon for the twelve-mode system, but he avoids mentioning him until he feels compelled by Galilei’s writings to recall his name in the Sopplimenti.
The last part contains short discussions of each of the contributions collected in this volume
Chi scrive cosa?
The essay is dedicated to the voice of Yvette Guilbert. Two songs that were in her repertoire are analyzed: "Partie Carrée" et "D'elle à lui". The last part is dedicated to a correspondence between Yvette Guilbert and Sigmund Freud, about the art of the performance
Benthic assemblages and temperature effects on Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula larvae and settlement
Recruitment is a principal controlling factor in population dynamics of marine species. In marine
invertebrates with a planktonic larval stage, such as echinoids, recruitment is assured by larval supply,
settlement and juvenile survival. Larval supply and juvenile survival are affected by a wide range of factors,
including temperature, presence of predators, quality and quantity of food. Echinoid larval settlement is
mainly conditioned by the finding of a suitable substrate to metamorphose. The sea urchins Arbacia lixula and
Paracentrotus lividus are considered key species of the Mediterranean infralittoral rocky shores. At high
densities, the grazing activity of both species can produce and maintain barren grounds, a particular habitat
condition characterized by extremely low cover values of erect algae with high presence of naked substrates
and encrusting corallinales, poor in biodiversity and ecosystem functions. We tested the role of different
settlement substrates on the metamorphosis competent larvae of the two species. Furthermore, from our
larval rearing trails we were able to identify strong temperature effects on larval development of the two
species. P. lividus and A. lixula larvae have been reared at 18 °C but for the second species it was necessary to
use higher temperatures (22 °C) to perform settlement experiments, as in the 18 °C set all larvae died in the
first week. Both species larvae have been fed Cricosphaera elongata. Metamorphosis of competent larvae has
been induced using different substrates: naked stones, Lithophyllum incrustans, Stypocaulon scoparium,
Corallina elongata, turf forming algae and Posidonia oceanica. For each species, two larval batches were used
for settlement experiments; for each larval batch two replicates/substrates were set up. No differences in the
rate of metamorphosis on any of the tested substrates were observed for P. lividus, while A. lixula showed to
prefer naked stones and encrusting coralline algae Considering that A. lixula population growth may trigger
barren extension on rocky shores, this may lead to a positive feedback between barren extension and A. lixula
population density. Furthermore, our results suggest that the predicted rise in seawater temperature may
favor A. lixula larval survival and inhibit P. lividus. Combining information on temperature tolerance with
other sources of information for these species in the Mediterranean, it is possible to develop a conceptual
model of the interaction between the two species and the alternative state of their habitats
The destruction of the Mycenaean citadels has been a focus of scholarly debate since
Schliemann’s discoveries at Mycenae and Tiryns. After succinctly reviewing the most recent studies
on this topic, the author makes reference to the material evidence that supports competition
and conflicts among Mycenaean states and within the territories depending on the latter. He
concludes that words such as “collapse” and “resilience” fail to describe the dynamic history of
state formation in the Aegean world, while stressing the usefulness of the notion of “fragility”
recently advocated by N. Yoffee
A Strategic Performance-Based Planning Methodology to Promote the Regeneration of Fragile Territories
The paper seeks to investigate if an integrated strategic and performance-based methodological approach can contribute to tackle uncertainty and to overcome the rigid and long-lasting regulation belonging to the prescriptive planning. This approach is based on the multi-scalar dimensions of different decision-making levels; action programs; governance and social involvement. The methodological framework proposed is based on different methodological evaluation tools in order to support an adaptive and inclusive decisional process. The aim of this study is dual. On the one hand, we want to prove how an integrated approach, involving both strategic and performance-based planning methodologies, can incorporate the strengths of both approaches, while complementing their separate weaknesses, toward enhancing the decision-making processes for the sustainable regeneration of territories. On the other hand, we highlight how a flexible, dynamic, adaptive, context-aware, and site-specific decision support system can contribute to the definition of alternative scenarios and lead public authorities to opt for the most performing one in terms of environmental, social, and economic sustainability. The tool implemented was tested for the case study of the regeneration of a naturalist site in Pantelleria, a little island in the south of Italy belonging to a group of fragile territories that were cut off by the main development dynamics and have gradually become marginalized due to depletion of the local economy and demographic decline
