The Darkest Dark by C. Hadfield & K. Fillion

Hadfield, C., & K. Fillion (2016). The Darkest Dark, illustrated by T. Fan and E. Fan. Tundra Books, 2016.The Darkest Dark takes us into the adventures of young Chris the astronaut. Together with his dog Albert, Chris is busy exploring Mars and saving the planet from aliens. Chris is so busy being an astronaut that he even has trouble sleeping at night, when the dark corners of his bedroom reveal aliens and monsters of all kinds. Chris’ parents are a bit dismayed that Chris cannot sleep in his own bed and they try a number of tricks to teach Chris that his bedroom is perfectly safe from aliens. Then on a July evening Chris and his family go to the neighbours to watch the most spectacular event: men landing on the moon. Witnessing this modern miracle Chris is so inspired that he finds himself changed, and no longer afraid of the dark. This touching story is based on the childhood of astronaut Chris Hadfield, the first Canadian to walk in space. Hadfield and Kate Fillion have captured a story that is simple in many respects, however singularly inspiring, as it shows how Chris grows to overcome his fears and to realize his dreams. The graphite illustrations by Terry and Eric Fan are remarkably rich in detail. The subtle colours and contrasting dark tones bring a young child’s imagination to life. The imagery of the Hadfield cabin on Stag Island at times seems so real you can almost hear the water lapping and the crickets in the distance. This would be an excellent book for young children between the ages of 4-12, especially those interested in space or experiencing fear of the dark. Parents can appreciate the lovely illustrations as well as the historical photos and factual information at the end of the book.Reviewer: Hanne PearceHighly recommended: 4 out of 4 starsHanne Pearce has worked at the University of Alberta Libraries since 2004. Composites C/C et C/C-SiC pour applications tribologiques

    No full text
Modifications of the fibre reinforcement (fibre nature or architecture) and/or high temperature posttreatments of CIC composites are the most commonly used ways to control their tribological properties. In this study, the role of the matrix has been more especially investigated: (i) by controlling the nature of the pyrocarbon prepared by Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) either from propane or toluene precursors and (ii) by doping the ex-toluene matrix with silicon carbide, in variable amounts and microstructures (C/C-SiC). The tribological tests performed on such materials (pin-on-disc apparatus) have shown a direct relationship between the wear and friction coefficients. The friction coefficient is apparently proportional to the number of active sites generated du ring the formation of wear particles. The ability of composites to produce active sites is influenced by the turbostratic arrangement of pyrocarbons. Polynucleated smooth laminar pyrocarbons would lead to a less easier formation of wear particles than mononucleated rough laminar pyrocarbons. Silicon carbide operates as an abrasive, with a continuous creation of wear particles and associated with more elevated wear and friction coefficients than those for CIC composites. Moreover, the addition of SiC allows a gradualincrease of the friction coefficient with the sliding speed, whereas CIC composites exhibit an abrupt transition between a low and a high friction coefficient.

Bonding Failures of Lingual Orthodontic Brackets: A Retrospective Study Comparing Lingual Brackets with KommonBase Extensions, to Customized Lingual Brackets

    No full text
The aim of the present study was to evaluate in a clinical setting the bracket survival of lingual brackets bonded with the KommonBase system, and to compare it to the survival of a customized lingual bracket system. Two convenience samples of 13 consecutive patients treated with lingual fixed appliances with KommonBase extensions (Group 1) and 14 consecutive patients treated with customized Incognito (TM) lingual fixed appliances were retrospectively enrolled (Group 2). First time debondings were recorded from the files. Data were submitted to statistical analysis and a Log-rank test was used to compare the Kaplan-Meier survival curves between the two groups. Statistical significance was set as p < 0.05. Lingual brackets bonded with the KommonBase system showed a failure rate of 8%, while Incognito brackets showed a failure rate of 7.1%. The Log-rank test comparing the Kaplan-Meier survival curves revealed no statistically significant difference between the two groups (p = 0.343). Most debondings occurred during the first 6 months. Upper incisors and canines were less prone to debond than premolars and molars. In conclusion, no difference in bracket survival was observed between the KommonBase system and a customized lingual appliance

Dissolved organic matter contribution to rain water, throughfall and soil solution chemistry

A method is proposed to determine the acidbase properties of natural water samples containing relatively high amounts of dissolved organic matter. The electroneutrality principle as well as titration data are used to estimate the organic anion concentration in open field precipitation, throughfall and soil solutions, and to develop empirical models based on pH and dissolved organic carbon content. The organic acids dissolved in throughfall have a similar acidic site density but are weaker than those dissolved in soil solution, stream and lake waters. This method is usefull to determine the contribution of organic anions to the charge balance and to the buffering capacity of dissolved organic rich waters with low acid neutralizing capacity. It can be used also to determine the respective contribution of natural organics and anthropogenic minerals to the total acidity of throughfall and rain waters

The Synthesis of 3-Vinylindolines by the Palladium-Catalyzed Intramolecular Allylic Alkylation of Cinnamyl Acetates and the Synthesis of Polyphenolic 4-Aryl-3,4-dihydrocoumarins by Domino Friedel-Crafts Reactions

Historically, the alkylation of allylic acetates with non-stabilized C(sp3) nucleophiles has been challenging. The metal-catalyzed alkylation of allylic acetates and carbonates with organotin and organoboron reagents has significantly increased the scope of nucleophiles available to participate in such reactions; however, the generation of C(sp3)-C(sp3) bonds in this manner remains difficult. We therefore designed a substrate in order to explore the intramolecular transition metal-catalyzed alkylation of an allylic acetate with a C(sp3) organotin nucleophile. From this substrate we were able to successfully synthesize a number of 3-vinylindolines in modest to good yields in as little as seven steps through the palladium-catalyzed intramolecular allylic alkylation of cinnamyl acetates with tethered organotin nucleophiles. To the best of our knowledge this represents the first example of such a transformation, resulting in the formation of novel C(sp3)-C(sp3) bonds. It has been shown that polyphenolic procyandins, members of the flavonoid class of compounds, possess moderate affinity for a synthetic model of a proline rich region of the microtubule associated protein tau. The phosphorylation of this region of tau is thought to be correlated with the development of intraneuronal protein deposits, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease physiopathology. In the second part of this thesis, we set out to utilize the domino Friedel-Crafts alkylation/acylation of benzylidene Meldrum’s acids with phenols previously developed in our group for the synthesis of a number of polyphenolic 4-aryl-3,4-dihydrocoumarins, members of the neoflavonoid class of compounds. By synthesizing a library of polyphenolic neoflavonoids in this manner, which possessed variation in the number and position of hydroxyl groups about the aromatic rings, a systematic survey of the structure-activity relationship was to be conducted. This would allow us gain a better understanding of potential therapeutic agents that may be able to attenuate the formation of these intraneuronal protein deposits in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease
