Varicella notification in immigrants: a brief report from Ferrara, Italy

    No full text
Background and Aim of the work - We conducted a survey of varicella cases' notifications in the immigrant population in the province of Ferrara, Italy.

Materials and Methods – We collected notifications of infectious disease between 2002 and 2006.

Results and discussion - At the end of 2006, the 4.5% (14252 subjects) of total population of the province of Ferrara and its province was represented of immigrants from foreign countries. In this context, between 2002 and 2006, a total of 1969 cases of varicella, including 3.1% related to migrants, were reported. Among immigrants, there were 36 cases in males, and 26 in females. The cases were notified in the 64.5% by the hospital emergency service, in the 16.1% by the paediatrician and in 19.4% by the general practitioner. The incidence appears similar in both populations in childhood: this fact could means an integration in the local epidemiology for varicella of the immigrant school-children.

This essay is published in the book Ideas and the Matter, edited by Marinella Ferrara and Giulio Ceppi. The book presents the founding research undertaken by the Politecnico di Milano’s Material Design Culture Research Centre (Madec). Founded in 2014, Madec obtained the Design Department’s support during its first year by being granted the Fondo di Ateneo per la Ricerca di Base (FARB 2013) for “Fundamental/Foundational/ Exploratory Researches that are strategically assessed for scientific growth in a research department”. In the third section of the book, scientific discourse focuses on the Material Design Culture and changing approach in term of the evolution of research methods. In the chapter "Fundamental of Material Design Culture", the author traces the fundamentals of Material Design based on the Italian design history and its relationship with global design discourse

Physico-chemical properties of PEG-based inorganic hybrids

Organic-inorganic composites can be conveniently obtained by sol-gel recipes as class-I or class-II hybrids. They can find interesting applications in several fields, including drug delivery, scaffolding, bio-sensing, energetics, etc. In this paper we reconsider and reinvestigate our previous work in the field, by considering the sol-gel synthesis and physico-chemical characterization of class-I hybrids, and by trying to highlight some unifying elements that can be of help for the development of more efficient and precise synthesis methods. In particular, we will discuss systems based on poly(ethylene glycol) with SiO2 (1) and ZrO2 (2) as the ceramic phase. Emphasis will be put on the role played by solid-state NMR spectroscopy in unveiling the interactions at the base of hybrid formation. A 35 year employee of SSU/UIS, Ferrara discusses her experiences as a researcher and project manager within the University’s public affairs division. She recalls a number of projects in which the University conducted research and program evaluation on behalf of Illinois state agencies and her role in these assignments. Ferrara also relates her involvement in campus projects, such as the creation of a series of policy summits and work with the engaged citizenship speakers program. Ferrara documents UIS’ efforts to create the Illinois Channel, a public affairs TV station modeled on C-SPAN for the state of Illinois. She remembers working with a number of SSU/UIS faculty and staff including Naomi Lynn, John Collins, Richard Schuldt, Barbara Blankenship, Nancy Ford, Mike Lennon, Cullom Davis, Margie Williams, Charlie Wheeler, Carol Bloemer, and Phillip Paludan. Barbara concludes with her recollections of leading the formation of The Academic Professional Advisory Committee in 1995 at the time of the merger with the University of Illinois; and serving as its first chair from 1996-1999.
