The compositional techniques of Luigi Dallapiccola\u27s twelve-tone music

    No full text
The twelve tone music of Luigi Dallapiccola is generally summarized, concentrating on the solo piano work, Quaderno musicale di Annalibera as an example. Movement I, III, XI of the piece are analyzed in more detail, highlighting the serial techniques involved. The author\u27s own composition and compositional process is then described with reference to the compositional techniques of Luigi Dallapiccola. The three movements and author\u27s composition are included as musical scores

The influence of Luigi Dallapiccola on Bruno Maderna's early serialism

    No full text
This thesis examines the influence of Luigi Dallapiccola (1904–1975) on Bruno Maderna's (1920–1973) early serialism by means of a comparative analysis. Two song cycles are compared: Dallapiccola's Liriche greche (1942–45) and Maderna's Tre liriche greche per piccolo coro, soprano solo e strumenti (1948). The author presents separate analyses of each work (Chapters 1 and 2), which form the basis for comparison (Chapter 3). The analysis of Dallapiccola's Liriche greche examines in particular the effects of his non-serial compositional choices on his twelve-tone method. The discussion of Maderna's Tre liriche greche illustrates how his novel methods of serial development result from his aesthetic concern to create diversified musical surfaces. The comparison of the two composers' compositional methods establishes a number of similarities that substantiate Dallapiccola's influence on Maderna. The thesis concludes with a brief investigation of the relationship between Maderna's early and mature serialism.

Familial mandibuloacral dysplasia: report of an additional Italian patient

    No full text
Mandibuloacral dysplasia is a rare condition. Only 11 families have been reported and five of them were Italian, while consanguinity was found only in one report. We describe an additional Italian patient born from consanguineous parents. (C) 2000 Wiley-Liss, Inc

Luigi Dallapiccola, to whom we associate a relevant period in the european history, also settles the beginning of a new stage in the history of italian music. This Project aims to approach the piano works of this composer, analysing them, as well as contextualize the historical, social and cultural background in which he lived. This is a way of understanding his choices and the sonorous outcome of the works, developped through compositional techniques of the time, like the twelve-tone system. The author will try to answer questions regarding the compositional style, influences and approaches

Mutations of the Nogo-66 receptor (RTN4R) gene in schizophrenia

Schizophrenia (SCZD) or schizoaffective disorders are quite common features in patients with DiGeorge/velo-cardio-facial syndrome (DGS/VCFS) as a result of chromosome 22q11.2 aploinsufficiency. We evaluated the Nogo-66 receptor gene (RTN4R), which maps within the DGS/VCFS critical region, as a potential candidate for schizophrenia susceptibility. RTN4R encodes for a functional cell surface receptor, a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-linked protein, with multiple leucine-rich repeats (LRR), which is implicated in axonal growth inhibition. One hundred and twenty unrelated Italian schizophrenic patients were screened for mutations in the RTN4R gene using denaturing high performance liquid chromatography (DHPLC). Three mutant alleles were detected, including two missense changes (c.355C>T; R119W and c.587G>A; R196H), and one synonymous codon variant (c.54G>A; L18L). The two schizophrenic patients with the missense changes were strongly resistant to the neuroleptic treatment at any dosage. Both missense changes were absent in 300 control subjects. Molecular modeling revealed that both changes lead to putative structural alterations of the native protein

Protocol for prenatal diagnosis of cystic fibrosis based on studies of alkaline phosphatase isoenzymes

    No full text
: Amniotic fluid analysis of microvillar enzymes, including alkaline phosphatase (ALP) total activity and ALP isoenzymes, has been widely experimented with and used for the prenatal diagnosis of cystic fibrosis in the second trimester of gestation. Since the development of cystic fibrosis molecular analysis, interest in these biochemical tests has been maintained for those instances in which the pregnancy is not fully informative by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis or DNA is not available from the index-affected child. However, recommended biochemical protocols do not provide clear-cut diagnostic results in a minority of cases. We have tested the reliability of cystic fibrosis biochemical prediction by ALP high-resolution electrophoresis and ALP kinetic studies after inactivation by urea. With this approach, all the amniotic fluid samples that had not been unambiguously classified as affected or unaffected by standard microvillar enzymes analysis were definitely categorized. The proposed method seems to improve the diagnostic accuracy in pregnancies with a one in four risk of resulting in a child with cystic fibrosis
