Oxidative deamination of epsilon-N-acetylthialysine and epsilon-N-acetylselenalysine by snake venom L-aminoacid oxidase.
epsilon-N-acetylthialysine and epsilon-N-acetylselenalysine are oxidatively deaminated by Crotalus adamanteus l-aminoacid oxidase, giving rise to the corresponding alpha-ketoacids, identified by some chemical and chromatographic tests and by comparison with synthetic compounds. no cleavage of the C-S or C-Se bonds of the substrates occurs during the reaction. The enzyme acts as well on the epsilon-N-acetylderivatives of thialysine and selenalysine as on epsilon-N-acetyllysine. The substitution of the gamma methylene group of lysine by a sulfur or a selenium atom seems not to greatly affect the substrate specificity of the enzyme

An Experimental and Density Functional Study of the Sb-C Bond Activation and Organo-Rh Bond Formation from the Spontaneous Decay of [RhCl3(SbPh3)3]
The reaction of RhCl3 with SbPh3 that produces mer-[RhCl3(SbPh3)3] 1 and trans,mer-[RhCl2(Ph)(SbPh3)3] 2 [A. Cavaglioni, R. Cini, J. Chem. Soc., Dalton Trans. (1997) 1149 (and references cited therein)], as well as the transformation of 1 to 2, was studied in details using the UV-Vis spectroscopy and density functional approaches. We elucidated the mechanism of Sb-C(Ph) bond activation and Rh-C(Ph) bond formation during these processes. Experimental studies show that the first step of the reaction of RhCl3 with SbPh3 is the formation of 1, which later rearranges to complex 2 via a concerted mechanism. The transition state associated with this transformation includes the Rh(III) center (hepta-coordinate) that interacts with three Cl- ligands, two Sb-centers of SbPh3 ligands, and one Sb-Ph bond of the third SbPh3 ligand. The Cl- ligand, trans to Sb, bridges Rh and Sb atom from the third SbPh3 ligand. A possible pathway involving rhodium(I) intermediate species was also taken into account. The calculated geometry parameters of models of complexes 1 and 2 are in good agreement with the available X-ray data. Presented relative energies of the studied reactions are in good agreement with the relative yields of 1 and 2
Democracy, Republicanism and Constitution in Corsica (1755-1768)
Unusual coordinating behavior by three non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs from the oxicam family towards copper(II). Synthesis, X-ray structure for copper(II)-isoxicam, -meloxicam and -cinnoxicam-derivative complexes, and cytotoxic activity for a copper(II)-piroxicam complex
Cytotoxic tests recently performed at National Cancer Institute, NCI (USA), on [Cu(HPIR)2(DMF)2], 1, (H2PIR = piroxicam, 4-hydroxy-2-methyl-N-pyridin-2-yl-2H-1,2-benzothiazine-3-carboxamide 1,1-dioxide) a widely used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, NSAID [see R. Cini, G. Giorgi, A. Cinquantini, C. Rossi, M. Sabat, Inorg. Chem. 29 (1990) 5197–5200, for synthesis and structural characterization, DMF = dimethylformamide] (NSC #624662) by using a panel of ca. 50 human cancer cells, showed growth inhibition factor GI50 values as low as 20 ?M against several cancer lines, with an average value 54.4 ?M. The activity of 1 is larger against ovarian cancer cells, non-small lung cancer cells, melanoma cancer cells, and central nervous system cancer cells. The widely used anticancer drug carboplatin (cis-diammine(1,1-cyclobutanedicarboxylato)platinum(II)) (NSC #241240) has average GI50 value of 102 ?M. The reactions of copper(II)–acetate with other NSAIDs from the oxicam family were tested and crystalline complexes were obtained and characterized. Isoxicam (H2ISO = 4-hydroxy-2-methyl-N-(5-methylisoxazol-3-yl)-2H-1,2-benzothiazine-3-carboxamide 1,1-dioxide) produced [Cu(HISO)2] · 0.5DMF, 2 · 0.5DMF (DMF = dimethylfomamide). The coordination arrangement is square-planar and the HISO? anions behave as ambi-dentate chelators via O(amide),N(isoxazole) and O(enolate),O(amide) donors. Meloxicam (H2MEL = 4-hydroxy-2-methyl-N-(5-methyl-1,3-thiazol-2-yl)-2H-1,2-benzothiazine-3-carboxamide 1,1-dioxide) produced [Cu(HMEL)2(DMF)] · 0.25H2O, 3 · 0.25H2O. The coordination arrangement is square-pyramidal, the equatorial donors being O(amide),N(thiazole) from two HMEL? anions and the apical donor being O(DMF). Unexpectedly, cinnoxicam (HCIN = 2-methyl-1,1-dioxido-3-[(pyridin-2-ylamino)carbonyl]-2H-1,2-benzothiazin-4-yl-(3-phenylacrylate)) produced [Cu(MBT)2(PPA)2] (MBT = 3-(methoxycarbonyl)-2-methyl-2H-1,2-benzothiazin-4-olate 1,1-dioxide, PPA = 3-phenyl-N-pyridin-2-ylacrylamide)
Disrupting the Neoliberal University in South Africa. The #FeesMustFall Movement in 2015
This article analyses the 2015 student mobilizations in South Africa (SA), which arose in opposition to a 10% hike in tuition fees planned for 2016 at the University of Witwatersrand (WITS) and spurred a massive student reaction across all the universities of the country. After only 10 days of mobilization, the protest, also known as #FeesMustFall by virtue of the most popular Twitter hashtag associated with it, succeeded in halting the hike. How and why did the protesters win? To answer this question, this study combined various qualitative methods of analysis. The author carried out in-depth interviews with all the relevant actors involved in the issue, and analysed documents relating to the movement elaborated by the students in the year of the protest (2015), as well as the main policy documents on higher education in post-apartheid South Africa (1994–2016) released by the government. The author argues that massive and disruptive student protests play a crucial role in ‘young’ democracies, as is the case of today’s South Africa, in which higher education is still considered an important societal issue, and university-level students a legitimate political actor. Where students are perceived as a legitimate element of the political system, it is more likely for them to have an impact on society
Oxidative deamination of thialysine by snake venom L-aminoacid oxidase.
Thialysine is oxidatively deaminated by snake venom L-aminoacid oxidase at alkaline pH. The oxygen consumption curves show a characteristic diphasic course: the quick uptake of half a mole of oxygen per mole of substrate, in aggreement with a typical oxidative deamination, is followed by a slow extra oxygen consumption. The first product of the reaction is the corresponding alpha-oxo-epsilon-amino acid, which spontaneously cyclizes to the internal Schiff base 5-6-dihydro-delta 3,1,4-thiazin-3-carboxylic acid (TZCA). This latter has been identified by its UV absorption spectrum, by some chemical reactions, by paper chromatography, and by the production of cystamine and glyoxylic acid after prolonged oxidation of thialysine followed by acid hydrolysis. The possibility of an alpha-beta elimination reaction giving rise to cysteamine from thialysine, coupled to the oxidative deamination, has been excluded
