Color loci placemaking: The urban color between needs of continuity and renewal
The article presents the theoretical framework and the operational concepts of a research, finalised to explore and verify the prerequisites of an approach to urban colour that, while recognising to colour the flexible as well as transient capacity to respond to the successive and multiple demands that characterise the urban space, sees a possible way of coexisting between the needs of continuity and renewal.
Searching to understand the modalities and possibilities through which colour can intervene in the processes of transformation of the city in order to support both the needs of resignification and reappropriation and those of conservation and enhancement of the vital identity of each single place, the research have looked on one side to the experiences gained within the colour plans and Lenclos’ geography of colour and on the other side to the different and diversified experiences developed within the idea and practice of placemaking, aimed at the recognition and enhancement of the collective and plural creative dimension that colour seems effectively able to interpret. The term “color loci placemaking” was introduced to summarize this mode/possibility of understanding and approaching urban colour, characterised especially by the attention for the specificity of each single place and the human factor underpinning place-experience
Color plans: Cultural and methodological foundations
The theme of urban colour planning and design is characterized by a plurality and multidisciplinarity of approaches, values and meanings, whose implications and correlations are still little explored. In Europe since the seventies, the colour plans dealt for the first time the subject of urban colour in a unified and systematic way, thus allowing the development of real urban planning instruments to coordinate, control or regulate the colours of the city, or a significant part of it. In spite of the different approaches and methods that distinguished especially the first phase of experimentation and discussion, colour plans are characterized by the same desire to respond to the problems of urban quality and identity through the enhancement of the chromatic image. The paper traces the first experimentations of urban colour planning, bringing out the cultural and methodological conditions and foundations within which the colour plans are formed and structured, as well as the topicality of the questions raised in the light of the recent and widespread urban revitalization operations through colour
An educational experience about color emotion and its design implications
The paper presents the context, contents and results of an educational experience conducted within the Shapes, Surfaces and Colours module of the Master in Furniture Design by Poli.Design, Politecnico di Milano, in December 2018. This experience is part of a color design education research project with the aim to explore, evaluate, experiment and systematize design implications offered by the evaluation of the emotional response to color in design education and professional practice.
Besides the educational purposes, this experience allowed us to verify, evaluate and compare the presence of associative recurrences between a selection of emotion words and color attributes, firstly with an initial exploration without using color samples, and secondly with the construction of contextualized 4-color combinations. Finally, in a process of student-learning and experimentation that moves from abstraction and generalization towards design contextualization, the possibility of using such experiences and connotative associations to build the emotional character of an interior space was explored.
The results of this experience contribute to validating the design opportunities offered by the possibility of dealing with the evaluation of the emotional response to color in terms of color attributes, and thus of color combinations. In addition, the use of such associative assumptions to build the emotional character of an interior space seemed to be a useful educational and methodological tool to relate color to the other design components—shape, material and surface, in particular—and to show the potential value of a design process structured around color and the sensorial and emotional qualities of the environment
An educational experience on the exploration and experimentation of colour associations and relationships
The following article describes the results of an educational experience conducted within the Color and Perception course at the School of Design of the Politecnico di Milano, in the academic years 2013/2014 and 2014/2015. The students were asked to work on the creation of colour palettes associated with a selection of “evocative terms”, or keywords, which found a more or less extensive recurrence in literature and experimental research that addresses synesthetic associations of colour. Next, the students’ works went through a review process in order to evaluate the actual presence of associative recurrences, and thus their relevance in the attributes of hue, lightness, and saturation. This check was carried out for each keyword using the NCS - Natural Colour System1. Where the number of reference samples proved to be sufficiently interesting to support assessments, the results showed how for some keywords there was a clear association recurrence in the nuance and/or hue
Color emotion as a feasible tool in a participatory project for a Primary School
The experimentation conducted during a participatory pilot research project in a Primary School in Milan, explored the use of emotional associations of color through the identification of evocative terms, or “emotion words”, together with color combinations and images of projects in specific contexts, as a basis for comparison, discussion and verification, and, to conclude, for development of project hypotheses. Even if we cannot, on a numerical level, consider significant the reference sample used within the participatory process, both in the preliminary and in the verification phase of the methodological assumptions, the results of the experimentation led us to assume that the design methodology we identified and adopted proved to be functional in order to facilitate comparison and verification within the participatory process and subsequently develop design hypotheses based on the same comparison and verification
Color loci placemaking.
