"Although overlapping significantly in choice with the recent ensemble in French, L'analyse et la recherche [Hermann, Paris, 1991], this is a new Poincaré anthology in any language. The editor has translated a dozen shorter papers on topological dynamics, stability of the solar system, fluids in equilibrium, mechanics according to Hertz, probability according to Bertrand, gas dynamics, electromagnetism according to Maxwell, the dynamics of the electron, and quantum mechanics (then emerging). In addition, two parts of Poincaré's autobiographical survey are included. The editor provides an introduction largely concerned with dynamics and stability, and a good bibliography of primary and historical writings." I. Grattan-Guinness, MR1339766 (96i:01041
