    No full text
Background: Archival documents provide an historical account of the establishment of pharmaceutical chemistry in Ferrara dating back to 1801. This includes details such as the Decree of October 9th, 1801; the appointment of Antonio Campana as the course instructor; the search for a suitable location; the setup of laboratories at St. Anna Hospital; and the comprehensive inventory of equipment, chemicals, instruments, and valuable books. Aim(s): To explore the origins and early development of pharmaceutical chemistry in Ferrara, Italy, particularly focusing on the key events, individuals, and the initial setup of educational and laboratory facilities. Method(s): An in-depth analysis of archival documents related to the establishment of pharmaceutical chemistry in Ferrara. Results: The results of this study reveal significant insights into the early history of pharmaceutical chemistry in Ferrara. Detailed information is presented regarding the Decree of 1801, the appointment of Antonio Campana, the selection of a suitable location, and the establishment of laboratories at St. Anna Hospital. The inventory of equipment, chemicals, instruments, and valuable books is also outlined. Conclusion: In conclusion, the historical account of pharmaceutical chemistry in Ferrara sheds light on its foundational elements, key contributors, and the early infrastructure that laid the groundwork for its subsequent development. This exploration enhances our understanding of the historical context in which pharmaceutical education and research began in Ferrara

Tobacco in the Erbario Estense and other Renaissance evidence of the Columbian taxon in Italy

    No full text
The Erbario Estense, preserved in the Archivio Segreto Estense (Modena State Archives, Italy), is one of the very few sixteenth century herbaria still existing today. Among its exsiccata are a dozen species coming from the Americas, one of which is tobacco. The author of the specimen calls the plant Tabacho, ouer Herba Regina; Camus and Penzig, in the late nineteenth century, identify it as Nicotiana tabacum and affirm that it could be the most ancient direct proof of the presence of this plant in Italy. Today, attribution of the specimen to the above-mentioned species is certain and, according to the studies carried out for the present research, only three other sixteenth century exsiccata of N. tabacum still exist, all of them preserved in the Erbario Aldrovandi in Bologna. Therefore, the specimen of the Erbario Estense is extremely precious from a historical and scientific viewpoint. Tobacco was certainly known by the simplists who were working at that epoch in the lively scientific and medical environment of Ferrara, even if, according to documentary sources, real pharmacological use of the plant seems to have taken place only in successive phases

Synthesis of a novel series of imidazo[4,5-c]pyrazole derivatives and their evaluation as herbicidal agents

Ever changing problems in agricultural weed control require periodic introduction of new herbicides. Imidazo[4,5-c]pyrazoles, which were considered of interest as potential herbicides, were synthesized and examined for the pre-emergence, post-emergence, and post-transplant control of weeds in rice against broadleaf and grass weed species. The data obtained suggest that some imidazo[4,5-c]pyrazoles have potential herbicidal activity against a wide range of weeds, with 5-methyl, 5-thiomethyl, and 5-unsubstituted derivatives being the most effective. No herbicidal activity was observed in the 5-methylsulfonylimidazo[4,5-c]pyrazole and imidazo[4,5-c]pyrazolone series

Introducing Age.Vol.A: digital tools to promote communication between seniors, foreign caregivers and families

This presentation introduces Age.Vol.A.– Ageing, Volunteers, Assistants. Multilingual tools for Assisting the Ageing, a research project on ageing issues focusing on the demographic and social situation of Varese, an 80,000-inhabitant city in North-West Italy, with 13% of its population over 65 and foreigners representing over 8% of the province’s population, a significant proportion of whom is employed as caregivers to assist elderly people at home. Age.Vol.A. starts from the assumption that, between home-assisted Italian seniors and their non-Italian caregivers, there exists a linguistic and cultural barrier as well as a digital divide, which tends to increase the physical and social isolation of the elderly population (Russo et al., 2019; Vicentini & Grego, 2019; Vicentini et al., 2020). The paper intends to offer an overview of the output of this research project, i.e. a multilingual website and a multilingual smartphone application aimed at providing the foreign caregivers with terminology and practical information related to their assisted and the institutions aimed to assist those who assist the elderly, from health and healthcare to administrative issues. The terminology is divided into three macro areas – health, institutions, daily life – with secondary fields according to various communicative situations. The concept of the digital tools rests on the notions of translanguaging in migrant communities (Canagarajah, 2013; Hafner & Jones, 2015; Schreiber, 2015) as a means to deploy communication practices which digital tools can support through adaptive moves through linguistic, textual, and audiovisual media. Exotic species in the Erbario Estense: new plants from the world to sixteenth-century Italy

Renaissance herbaria may provide precious information on exotic plants known or even introduced in Italy during the fif- teenth and sixteenth centuries AD. In the Erbario Estense, preserved in the Archivio di Stato di Modena (northern Italy), there are 14 species considered as allochthonous neophytes or not present in the Italian flora. First, we accurately verified the taxa identification; then, we searched for the same species in the other coeval Italian Renaissance herbaria and collected the information present in the written sources of the second half of the 1500s (concerning, above all, the use of these species as medicinal plants); finally, we paid attention to their current uses in ethnobotanical tradition and their market value. For 12 taxa, we could confirm the former identification; whereas for 2, we came to a different conclusion; the comparison with other Renaissance herbaria, particularly Aldrovandi’s, greatly helped this evaluation process. The species treated here are not placed according to a precise order nor do they have particular medicinal values in common: probably, the specimens were simply added to the existing nucleus, as the species were known or were proven to be rather useful. We shall be able to gain further knowledge when it shall be possible to study all the remaining species. In any case, the Erbario Estense is an important testimony for sixteenth-century botany, that contains some of the most ancient specimens of exotic species that are of common use in large parts of the world today
