Francis Quarles: a study of his literary ancestry and contemporary setting as a religious poet.
PhDIn his choice of biblical material, in his attitude
towards biblical matter in poetry, in his efforts to
supplant secular poetry with divine poetry, and in his
style and metre, Francis Quarles is in an established
tradition of religious poetry which dates from the
mid-sixteenth century. He used this poetry to support
the Established Church and a Monarchy based on Divine
Right when these institutions were being attacked. He
criticized particularly Roman Catholics, Arminians, Puritans,
and Separatists. However, his poetry is not purely
propagandist. He shared a contemporary interest in the
vocabulary of the language and made many additions to it,
and in his syncretizing of classical mythology with
Christianity he followed contemporary practice. He
favoured the Authorized Version of the Bible, and he
satisfied demands for moralistic and didactic literature
in his poetic renderings of biblical material, which is
developed through the use of long speeches, long similes,
descriptive action, and exegesis. In Emblemes, where the
poems are but extended paraphrases of biblical text, the
same techniques of development are used.In his invocations Quarles follows prevailing
practices in addressing the Holy Spirit, God, or Christ.
There was contemporary confusion concerning the muse
Urania, but she retains her primary classical
associations and is never more than the Christian poet's
tutelary spirit or a personification of his poetic genius.
The high esteem in which Quarles' works were held
is shown in the comments of many of his contemporaries.
In Cowley's criticism his lack of artistry in handling
biblical material is pointed out.
Quarles shows more poetic powers in his occasional
lyrics and his satirical ability is at times suggested.
Had be concentrated on these powers, quite possibly he
would today hold a higher place as a poet in English
literature

Absolute doubly differential bremsstrahlung cross sections from rare gas atoms
The absolute doubly differential bremsstrahlung cross section has been measured for 28 and 50 keV electrons incident on the rare gases Xe, Kr, Ar and Ne. The cross sections are differential with respect to energy and photon emission. A SiLi solid state detector measured data at 90¿ with respect to the beam line. A thorough analysis of the experimental systematic error yielded a high degree of confidence in the experimental data. The absolute bremsstrahlung doubly differential cross sections provided for a rigorous test of the normal bremsstrahlung theory, tabulated by Kissel, Quarles and Pratt 1 (KQP) and of the SA theory 2 that includes the contribution from polarization bremsstrahlung. To test the theories a comparison of the overall magnitude of the cross section as well as comparison of the photon energy dependence was carried out. The KQP theoretical values underestimated the magnitude of the cross section for all targets and for both energies. The SA values were in excellent agreement with the 28 keV data. For the 50keV data the fit was also very good. However, there were energy regions where there was a small discrepancy between the theory and the data. This suggests that the Polarization Bremsstrahlung (PB) mechanism does contribute to the overall spectrum and is detectable in this parameter space. 1 Kissel, L., Quarles, C. A., Pratt, R. H., Atom. A model for low energy thick-target bremsstrahlung produced in an SEM
A model for thick-target bremsstrahlung has been developed based on the approach used by Storm ( E. Storm, Phys. Rev. A.5, 2328 (1972).)and Ambrose et al. ( R. Ambrose, D. L. Kahler, H. E. Lehtihet and C. A. Quarles, Nucl. Inst. Meth. Phys. Res. B 56/57, 327 (1991).). The model integrates the thin-target cross sections ( Kissel, C. A. Quarles and R. H. Pratt, Atom. Data Nucl. Data Tables 28, 381 (1983).) over the target taking into account electron energy loss, electron back scattering and photon attenuation. The model is compared with measurements in reflection mode for atomic numbers from 4 to 79 and for electron energies between 5 and 25 keV. A JEOL JSM 6100 Scanning Electron Microscope is used for the electron beam, and a Link Si(Li) detector for the bremsstrahlung spectrum. Very good agreement is found between the model and the experimental results. Sensitivity of the model to various assumptions about electron back scattering and photon attenuation will be discussed. The model is also found to do as well as a recent empirical model ( Trincavelli, G. Castellano and J. A. Riveros, X-Ray Spectr. 27, 81 (1998).) in describing the photon energy dependence of the bremsstrahlung spectrum.N/

Low energy Bremsstrahlung cross sections
Experimental bremsstrahlung cross sections differential in photon angle and photon energy have been obtained for incident electron energies of 50, 100, and 140 keV. Measurements have been made for thin targets of carbon, aluminum, copper, silver, and gold and for angles of 30, 45, 60, 90, and 135 degrees. Results were found to be in excellent agreement with previous experiments of Motz and Placious and Rester, et al., and with the theoretical calculations of Elwert and Haug and others for targets of aluminum and gold for 50 keV incident electrons. No other comparisons were possible. The work also investigates how bremsstrahlung cross sections depend on angle, energy, and atomic number
