Letter from Bishop E. Mulhern to Hagan
Holograph letter from Bishop E. Mulhern, Ardmaine, Newry (County Down), to (Hagan). Enclosing typescript letter signed H.J.[C...], The Hibernian Bank Ltd., College Green, Dublin, to Mulhern acknowledging receipt of a sum for credit of Monsignor Hagan. – Listing the causes represented, concerning burses and a charity. Informing him that Dr. Kearns died; he left bequests typical for his pious and charitable nature. Approving of the proposed successor in the chapter. He only saw Curran briefly; his visit was during the busy time of confirmations. He is thinking of going to Bobbio but will not make commitments because of his elderly mother
Letter from Bishop E. Mulhern to Hagan
Holograph letter from Bishop E. Mulhern, Ardmaine, Newry (County Down), to (Hagan), following up on his telegram, explaining that he could not have done anything in a matter concerning an author of a book [on Ulster]. Recounting the experience of an explosion heard the previous night the cause of which is still unclear. Commenting that 'Raphoe is dragging a "lengthening chain"' after a prolonged investigation; that Dr. O'D[onnell] can now appoint parish priests but might not care to exercise the privilege since the main parishes are endowed
Letter from Bishop E. Mulhern to Hagan
Holograph letter from Bishop E. Mulhern, Ardmaine, Newry (County Down), to (Hagan). Glad that the pilgrimage has been placed in the hands of the (Catholic Truth Society) for both the clerical and lay sections, thereby avoiding a special arrangement for a small group that would give rise to resentment. Expressing his opinion plainly that the laity is owed all encouragement, seeing as they always ungrudgingly respond as a body. Regretting any instance where visitors to Rome find the rector discourteous; they ought to feel the College is theirs. In 1925, despite Hagan's doing his best to welcome the pilgrimage, causes were found to assign political reasons for any welcome of pilgrims that was wanting in some way. Certain that Hagan will give him credit for his sincerity. He met Curran briefly in Armagh. Finally hoping the College has a few good 'batters' among the boys against the continentals. Letter from Bishop E. Mulhern to Hagan
Holograph letter from Bishop E. Mulhern, Gresham Hotel, Dublin, to Hagan, advising him that he has asked [Conseil] to convey the message for him - the news from Hagan's quarters prevented himself from doing so. The one [issue] of importance can only be resolved by divine intervention. Only one explanation exists for [S...] intervening at this stage and not at the beginning of the conference. It seems that Lloyd George influenced the king's telegram 'and manoeuvred the Roman telegram as a means of securing his plans', [using Santuss] in such a plot. If the negotiations fail the people will place the blame on the [...] authority (more illegible). [C...] will write to Hagan from (Dun Laoghaire); he is full of hope. Then stating that the [Catholic Truth Society] meeting was a big success and a tremendous manifestation of Catholicity and of determination
Letter from Bishop E. Mulhern to Hagan
Holograph letter from Bishop E. Mulhern, Ardmaine, Newry (County Down), to (Hagan). Alluding to a certain report already well-known, concerning 'Fr. M.' [Murray]. Warmly recommending the latter also for an episcopate, but cautioning that a Primate is in need of more than ordinary qualities. 'Fr. M. is truly a monk, and very dedicated to his duties, but he would have to apply himself seriously to the political situation; the education question in the north requires careful managing. Also, any successor [of Cardinal O'Donnell] needs to have all the bishops' respect. The last two Primates carried the church through seemingly insuperable difficulties. The two northern bishops with the best qualifications are Clogher (Bishop McKenna) and 'D&C' (Bishop McRory of Down and Connor). Recommending the former, though he would loudly protest himself. While 'an exuberance of Clogher men in the north looks dangerous' the interests of the church advise in his favour. [late December 1927
Chemotaxis of artificial microswimmers in active density waves
Living microorganisms are capable of a tactic response to external
stimuli by swimming toward or away from the stimulus source; they do so
by adapting their tactic signal transduction pathways to the
environment. Their self-motility thus allows them to swim against a
traveling tactic wave, whereas a simple fore-rear asymmetry argument
would suggest the opposite. Their biomimetic counterpart, the artificial
microswimmers, also propel themselves by harvesting kinetic energy from
an active medium, but, in contrast, lack the adaptive capacity. Here we
investigate the transport of artificial swimmers subject to traveling
active waves and show, by means of analytical and numerical methods,
that self-propelled particles can actually diffuse in either direction
with respect to the wave, depending on its speed and waveform. Moreover,
chiral swimmers, which move along spiraling trajectories, may diffuse
preferably in a direction perpendicular to the active wave. Such a
variety of tactic responses is explained by the modulation of the
swimmer's diffusion inside traveling active pulses

Symposium on Livestock Problems
Part 1 - John C. Macfarlane
Livestock, animals raised in confinement, animals in large numbers shipped to other countries, and, of course, those cattle, calves, sheep, swine, goats, poultry and horses raised for the purpose of supplying meat for human and animal consumption will present problems that will increase in importance as long as they exist.
Humane problems involving livestock are a hundred times more important and much more complex today than they were a hundred years ago. What can societies do to prevent or reduce this reservoir of potential cruelty? I think we can do many things.
Part 2 - Dr. F.J. Mulhern
I believe there is a growing awareness today by man of his total environment, and I\u27m speaking to you today as an administrator within government. Man, in looking at his environment, is searching to comprehend its parameters, and he feels very insecure until he really recognizes those parameters. In his search to find these parameters, he has become somewhat confused. However, I believe we are causing some changes in the area that I\u27m deeply associated with and I\u27d like to share some of them with you. I believe you can help us
Knowledge and innovation in the interface between the steel and automotive industries: The case of Dofasco
Warrian, P. and Mulhern, C. (2005) Knowledge and innovation in the interface between the steel and automotive industries: the case of Dofasco, Regional Studies 39 , 161–170. The key motivation behind innovation in the steel industry has been the revolution in vehicle manufacturing, as automotive steel represents the largest source of revenue for integrated mills. The paper examines in a comparative context the innovative practices of North America's most profitable integrated automotive steel producer, Dofasco Inc. It seeks to elucidate conclusions from previous work on knowledge derived from participation in global learning networks. The authors claim that Dofasco is a commercialization‐stage innovator. It adds value to a product or process as it meets the market, but does not significantly contribute to fundamental and applied scientific research in automotive steel production. The geographic sphere in which most of Dofasco's customer‐oriented innovation occurs is in a regional system of innovation, specifically the automotive parts and assembly hub of south‐western Ontario and Michigan.Steel, Automotive, Innovation, Knowledge, Networks, Acier, Automobile, Innovation, Connaissance, Réseaux, Stahl, Auto, Innovation, Fachkenntnisse, Netzwerke, Acero, Industria automotora, Innovación, Conocimiento, Redes, JEL classifications: L62, M21, R00,
